Agree, and makes me wonder at the “having to have the cleanest sound” thing, when so many revered bassists of the past did the complete opposite.

After years of putting up with Levi’s I’ve found that Next do the best jeans for me. So a win situation as they’re about a third of the price. But it wouldn’t have bothered me if they were twice the price, they just fit so much better.

Makes sense, in the punk/Oi scene there are bands that are “difficult” shall we say, many promoters seem to only end up putting them on once (or until they kick off about something trivial) and these bands don’t seem to gig that often. Whereas some other bands who are easy to work with get a lot of said work.

That business about the A string/dots would irritate the hell out of me, irrespective of how the bass played & sounded I’d have to send it back.

Exactly what I was going to say. The BF is just a lot less “coloured” in comparison to the 410 so it’s a case of getting there with eq.

I think Orange amps & Jazz basses are a good pairing, Dave, the warmth of the Orange stops the Jazz from being too harsh. Wow, I just wrote out a Christmas Cointreau ad from the 70s in respect of bass amps!

@Paolo85 I had a Wilkinson pickup in a Vintage Tony Butler Precision and to me it sounded very near the Tonerider & Fender CS62.

I’ve only ever been fired from one band. It went from rehearsal 1 with the new set up where the project/band leader remarked that the drummer and I could clearly play anything to about rehearsal 4 where he came up with the idea that we should buy our own rehearsal studio for £30k. So as there were 5 of us that would be £6k each. The drummer and I both said no, so clearly our playing ability wasn’t as important as our wallets as we were both fired. We still laugh about it today, especially as the project/band leader did get his £30k studio and did two-thirds of three-fifths of feckall with it. He’s been working on this album now since 1995!

The Fralins are going to be better, pretty much the top end of Precision pickups, but imo Toneriders punch way above their price tag and are worth looking at.

Thing is now, the “budget” instruments are perfectly giggable. My old Squier VM77 Jazz bass was incredibly good quality for a supposed budget bass, and for a while I gigged with a Korean Squier Precision which was a very good instrument. I did see a well known punk band and the bassist was using a Squier which sounded great but I did wonder why, given his history in music he wasn’t using a more expensive instrument. Until I saw the amount of beer that got thrown at the band whilst playing. I thought of his bone dry Fenders at home and it all made sense.

I’ve just bought one of those for the very same reasons. It’s not really that much deeper than my Hiscox hard case so a lot more practical than having two basses/cases/bags in the car. Plus less actual items to carry too, so load in/out easier.

Defo, and his cab is a fairly reasonably priced Fender Rumble 410 so no boutique gear there (has a GK amp of some sort, not the small ones). Apparently in his younger days it was T-Bird & SVT but sensible punker that he is he’s realised that gear is a bit beyond him now.

I recently bought both a gigbag and a bass on here, both sent with Parcelforce to make the delivery. I work for The Post Office. The bass apparently couldn’t be delivered as there were more than one Post Office in the area. True I said, but only one at the address the sender had put on the item so please deliver it there. Ah yes, ok then. The gigbag was delivered to Royal Mail, clearly not the name of the company I work for, and not at the address on the package. It took a further week of dealing with Parcelforce before I got it. Both items had the full postal address on the labels. So I suppose my verdict is, avoid Parcelforce.

I get the point re hard cases not being gig-practical, or at least the rectangular ones as I find Hiscox cases are great for gigs. But gig-bags just seem to be more gig-friendly for some reason, I love my Mono M80s, and I invariably top load them.

Have to admit certainly re guitars I preferred my Epiphone SG to the Gibson, about a quarter of the price but just feels so much better to play, hence I sold said Gibbo.

I exhibit that type of snobbery, but only in regards to myself, I just don’t feel like a “proper” bassist unless I’m using my US Fenders. Which is ridiculous as I’ve seen many pro bassists & guitarists using Mex Fenders, Squiers, Epiphones. It’s just something I can’t seem to get past, however my one justification I can use is that my US ones are better - for me. I enjoy playing the ones I have more than any others, including different ranges of US ones.

I use the Ultra Low on my SCR-DI, and yes find it just adds more than if I were to make the same adjustments on the eq itself, just seems to tighten it all up nicely.

A very good, fairly niche product made by a small company, I doubt they had any other option. I hope for them it doesn’t signify a slow down on orders.
