That’s how they say it in New York isn’t it?

If I were auditioning for an originals band it’s play what is written to get the job. What happens afterwards in regards to existing material is down to discussion if warranted. What happens when writing new material for the band re the bass, well that’s my job though am always open to creative input, I’m not too old to learn. But to get the job, play what’s been given. A big indicator of if someone can fit in in my opinion, starting off by refusing to play established lines when capable of doing so wouldn’t endear someone to me. I’d just think bother on the way every day.

Many comments about no Izzy, and I agree with them, but also no Steven Adler has a big impact on their sound. His style of drumming by far suited the material better than a straightforward heavy rock drummer. For me those two really helped Guns stand out a bit more from the pack. I don’t mind this new song, and liked some of Chinese Democracy but for me Appetite and Spaghetti are the only Guns albums I like start to finish.

Having been a “dinosaur” re sound for most of my playing life I’ve recently started wearing ACS earplugs as our drummer is so loud. The difference a much quieter backline makes is pretty astounding, every instrument is able to be heard clearly, enabling a much better understanding of what is going on. Great for rehearsals, I’m sure it would be great for gigs but IMO it would surely benefit songwriting at rehearsals as instead of getting to the studio and then finely tuning material it would already be done. So I’m sure that this way of playing - providing the audience get a good sound - has to be the way forwards.

When I left my old originals band they wanted whoever came in to play exactly what I did, no changes to songs that people already loved. We worked on them so that runs etc wouldn’t get in the way of vocals or drum fills, so stick with that. They also wanted the same bass sound, as it was important to maintain the sound of the band.

Bergantino 212 cabs – HDN vs CN (in comparison to AE and HD cabs)
Lozz196 replied to peteb's topic in Amps and Cabs
The CN212 was the runaway winner in a cab shoot out at the SE Bass Bash a few years back. It was in good company, several other high end makes but it walked through them like the 80s version of Mike Tyson, no mercy l. -

I think you’re right, it’s not so much what you hit on their material but how it’s hit. Rather like the old Cliff Williams & AC/DC thing, takes discipline to hang back and provide a constant rhythm. -
£900 should get you a good used Japanese made Fender. The quality of the MIJ (made in Japan) Fenders is very good and the necks being especially good. That said it would def be worth checking out the Player Series, this Mexican made range is similarly very good, and new is cheaper than the Japanese models.

A very very late new bass day...and first foray into fives
Lozz196 replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
I’m similar on Point 4 - recently bought a fiver and although I have no problems with it, I know I’m a 4-stringer at heart, much like I’m a steel-rounds/Precision player. -
Finger style the ‘Ray gets it. Don’t like slap so I can’t be objective on that.

Which isolated bass recordings would you love to hear?
Lozz196 replied to JJTee's topic in General Discussion
Good choices. I’d like to hear the bass on any of the tracks on Never Mind The Bollocks by The Sex Pistols. Not to learn them of course, managed that 40 years ago, I’d just like to hear the bass tone as it fits so well with the other instruments. -
I'd like to sell most of my basses, but can't bring myself to do so
Lozz196 replied to Sida79's topic in General Discussion
I had a similar experience with another retailer a few years back. Called them, told them what I wanted to purchase, and what I had to p-ex. Wouldn’t give me a price, told me I had to visit the shop. I countered with I knew what it was worth 2nd hand, and that as I was travelling a 100 miles to the shop if I was offered a derisory amount such as half what it was worth I would hit said offerer over the head with it, as such was it worth me making the journey. No was the response. -

I agree with all these, why would a seller not want an instrument to be set up at the cost of the buyer. As said even if the intended buyer pulls out it makes it a lot more attractive to future ones. Iffy methinks.

I go through a guitar phase every now & then, deciding that I need a Gibson Les Paul as I just love the sound of them. Only to then remember once I have one that I just don’t play them all that well and am much more suited to Fender guitars. Luckily my Telecaster Deluxe has the same pickup configuration as a Les Paul so I can get fairly near with it. And it’s black/black/maple!

I’m a “one sound for the band” kind of guy, once it’s set it stays on that for the whole gig/rehearsal, so I don’t need changes for songs or solos. As such I’ve two, depending on sound needed: For my old punk sound I have the Sansamp Para Driver For my classic rock sound I have the Ashdown OriginAL I’d say for a more generic bass sound the Ashdown wins it. The Para Driver more screams “look at me, here I am” but the Ashdown is perfect for a supporting bass role.

I had a bass like that a few years back, confused the hell out of me and elicited some very bad language until I sussed it out.
