The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
Lozz196 replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I’ve been playing my fairly recently acquired Fender MIJ Mustang a lot lately. I found that with my regular steel Elixir rounds it was a bit harsh and lacking a bit of depth so rather than change pickups bought a set of nickel Elixir rounds to try and it’s dealt with both aspects. The Jazz width neck is really easy to play, especially as I’m now getting arthritis in my left thumb (which was the reason I bought this bass). I’ve also found that due to the looser tension it’s made me play less forcefully than on my Precisions, so I’m getting a more melodic feel. I have gone up a gauge from 45-100 to 55-110 but they’re still looser which again is suiting me, something I wouldn’t have expected. -
I just read that the Bernie Marsden (of Whitesnake) auction included a Korean Squier Strat and that he used this to record most of an album in 2004 as he preferred it to a number of much higher end guitars. Just shows that it’s what the hands & fingers like that’s important and price tag maybe not so much. Although I went for one higher end bass over several lower priced one it would of course depend on it feeling better to play.

Nice one, re The Macc Lads, I spotted the Under 18 thing on the poster and it reminded me of their first album, which was billed as Not for Minors (or Engineers).

That`s a great shot

If you have a distortion sound call the time then keeping the Scrambler could be an option to boost/add gain during guitar solos.

A good new set up you’re getting there!

I always do the pencil in the nut thing when stringing my instruments nowadays, figured it must make things better, and given the scenario you mention above am glad I do this.

Thankfully yes, ACS PRO17s, bring the levels down nicely otherwise I’d be stone deaf.

They have them in the rehearsal studio we use. Which is fortunate given that our caffeine fuelled chimp is the loudest drummer I’ve ever played with. I have to have the 1000 watt hired amp connected to the 810 on about 7 or 8 just to keep up.

Sex Pistols to reunite...with one glaring omission

Def, Glen Matlock had some very nice inventive bass lines to some of those songs - and a great sound too. -
Sex Pistols to reunite...with one glaring omission

Yeah JR has recently seemed a bit less tolerant of the others (probably due to the Pistol series), strange though as for me SP were successful due to what all 4 of them brought and I would have thought he would have recognised that. I`m sure Frank will be better than Billy Idol, I watched Generation Sex at Glastonbury and thought they were awful, though the guy who produced our album was at one of their indoor gigs and said it was very good. -
Well I`ve got the 500, aside from a couple of gigs in pubs have always gone through FOH. The band weren`t keen on too much bass in the monitors so the rig always carried the on-stage sound and it never struggled, even on some pretty big stages (prob 1000 capacity venues). Having used it a couple of times without FOH it more than delivered but I think I`d go 800 if possible, doesn`t hurt to have more power than is needed.

Yeah I saw this and as much as I’m a fan of the band it’s not for me. No disrespect to Frank, he’s my best mates nephew (tho I’ve never met him) but for me without JR it’s not the Pistols. -
Those CS60 pickups, be they Jazz or Precision are great, really transform a bass.

I have 2 of these Squiers and they are excellent basses, def get my recommendations.

I’ll never tire of recommending the Ashdown RM amps. Lightweight, powerful, sound great and excellent customer service.

Agree on both these points. Similarly having had all ranges of Fenders I’ve found that the US ones are just better for me. Likewise I’ve had one Precision for about 9 years now and although I’ve a few others from the same range I just “know” that one better, and it shows (to me anyway) when I play it.

Reminds me of the first time I went to Rebellion, a whole load of punks & skins line-dancing to The Sweet. Rather bizarre but they were enjoying themselves immensely.

I think it might be something to do with the publishing rights, am sure someone will be along soon who knows more about this than me though.
