Are you looking for similar sound to the Ashdown rig - am assuming it was an ABM or MAG set-up? If so their RM500 gets very close to the ABM and weighs something like 5lbs so pair that with cab(s) of choice and away you go. Also, what budget so we don’t all recommend the most expensive cabs? Cab-wise Barefaced are very good and most of their range is more than suitable as a one-cab solution.

So just watching The Pretenders on Sky Arts and thought should comment on the bass, a great supporting-role sound, and I suppose inevitably a Precision/Ampeg set up. Nothing fancy, when the guitars are going it’s not really noticeable but when they drop out you hear how well it works with the drums and can appreciate the foundation that is laid for the guitars & keys (just saw a bit better, slide guitar not keys) to work on. My preferred style and type of sound for bass I suppose. Edit - and I should also add that Chrissie Hynde doesn’t appear to have lost any of her vocal chops - unlike many other singers of her age.

Ashdown ABM600 EVO IV. It’s an amazingly powerful and flexible amp, Class A/B so a real depth/weight to the sound but at only 13kg. The only thing I’d say re the Valve Drive is that it’s not like traditional drive, it’s not distortion as such, it just brings in a real warmth to the sound plus the associated harmonics of the valve at work.

Not sure about the Peavey but the GK will be a fair bit different in sound to the Hartke. When I used an LH500 my impression was it was a warm sounding amp whereas my GK MB500 was much cleaner sounding.

I’m hoping that my old band have got work lined up, like all of you in gigging bands this year has been difficult for them, though they’ve not stood still, they’ve released an EP and had tracks on compilation albums so still making forward moves. I know they’re already confirmed for the Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool next year so fingers crossed they can pick up the momentum that we had.

The Jazz will be more versatile, and given its a better known model will probably be easier to move on should you not get on with it.

I`ve def used a TE cab with this configuration though not sure if that exact model, and as typically TE, plenty loud enough and a nice tight sound rather than flub-city. Had the usual TE "spike" somewhere in the upper-mids which meant it sat very well in the mix.

My choice would be to keep the lighter more portable amp, easier to take along as a backup or to rehearsals.

I suppose it’s now that it’s finalised rather than speculation that this comes into its own, there’s now a definitive to petition against.

I’ve found when adding hi-mass bridges such as the Badass to Fender basses that they seem to modernise the lows and highs a touch. Nothing I think that could be determined in the mix, but enough so that I noticed it on my own basses. To me it kind of emphasised what a Jazz is about but detracted from the natural rounded mids of the Precisions. Nowadays I only change the bridge for stability - Gotoh do a baseplate with pre-cut grooves so I’ll get one of those but keep the springs/saddles from the original. Whether or not I’ll ever need that extra stability who knows, but it gives me reassurance and that’s what it’s all about, having greater confidence in my bass.

It’s a strange one, as even though my basses have an A-string retainer it still happened til I sussed the windings thing. Pretty much everyone recommends two windings on the peg, but for some reason a Warwick A-string needs minimum of three.

I found that exact same thing on the A, and where on other brands I’d cut them to 10cm to wrap around the tuning pegs I needed 13cm to stop this with the Warwicks.

And rather bizarrely at our current rehearsal rooms - when we’re allowed to rehearse of course - there’s one like it there. The difference in the eq I need on my amp for it is pretty shocking - in the other rooms I just set up as would be expected but this specific one, well again it’s cut lows and boost highs pretty much all the way. Rotten cab, we’ll avoid that room once we can go back.

It is good, I’d say the easiest to use pedal compressor I’ve had, and probably the best sounding. And you might not have to wait that long for that bargain as I’m going to be offloading mine. Why, if it’s so good, I hear you ask. Well both my amps have on-board compression and as I both only use a slight touch of compression this will do, plus i’ve just bought a high-pass filter pedal so need the room on my pedalboard. And I really don’t want to become a pedal-monster so it’s 3 max in Lozz-Land.

Well I decided on the HPF/LPF version without the mids function - I’ve enough eq on my amp & Para Driver. Worked out at £158 inc postage (postage is 40 CAD). Looking forward to receiving it.
