  1. I tried one and thought the same, nothing overboard just a little bit of fur to the sound which I’m sure would really work in the mix, a bit like when you hear isolated bass from artists like John Deacon.
  2. Good sound and I like how the sparse bass line fits in.
  3. Loved The Banana Splits, have the theme tune as my ringtone. Size of an elephant!
  4. Yes, definitely. In Knock Off we did (and they still do) everything legit, registered business, accountant etc and we received some nice sums via this. It is a ball ache both setting it up and the continual input from what I understand but worth it in the long run.
  5. As a die hard Precision player I find the Jazz easier to switch to, easier to coax the sounds in relation to a Precision as being the same brand they tend to behave similarly. I find that although the Stingrays are amazingly good quality and play fantastic I just can’t “de-Ray” them, even with flats. And after having had a few I’ve had to accept that they’re really not the bass for me. So my 1987 2-band will be up for grabs soon ☹️
  6. Yep, Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, a famed Thunderbird user, used to play a Squier Precision at the end of the set and smash it. To me it would have looked more authentic if he’d trashed an Epiphone bolt-on neck Tbird, after a whole set on a Tbird the Precision just looked wrong.

    Compressor

Agree, if anything it’s helped my playing a great deal. Coming from the punk world I can be a bit (massive understatement) heavy handed, but having the compression seems to reign me in.
  8. Might be worth a call to Watford Valves, see if there are replacements that enable cleaner headroom.

    Compressor

I think it’s down to what’s needed at the time. I’m currently using a Keeley Bassist, pretty much minimum settings but it works for me, just evening everything out nicely without changing much at all. Whereas in my last band when I tried a compressor it all but destroyed what I was aiming for, so never tried again in that setting.
  10. Now Sold One industry standard BOSS TU2 in decent condition, with box. Has some Velcro on bottom to attach to a pedal board.
  11. Not sure specifically re the OB1-500, but on a tour I did last year the headline band were using a Terror through an SVT410HLF and it paired very nicely. Plenty enough on-stage volume in some pretty big venues, so if the OB1 is similarly powered you`ll have no problems.
  12. Good point, my favourite band of all time is The Sex Pistols, but to be honest John Lydon in interviews more often than not gives me the hump. Maybe he is an intellectual but he always seems to be trying to lord it over others that (he considers) are less intelligent than him.
  13. And the good thing is, being very light and portable if you decide to buy another just for the look (doubling up would also sound great) you won’t be making gigging difficult.
  14. So, last night on Sky Arts I saw the Brian Johnson Meets programme, this week being Nick Mason. Was a good watch but there was one bit where Roger Waters played the bassline to Money and his sound/tone, well wow, just wow. Looked to be just his Precision going through a big Ashdown 8x10 combo. Clear, deep but defined, it was just - imo - awesome.
  15. Agree. I was quite amazed when I saw said seasoned pros I mentioned using older cheaper gear, but then looking at the gear you could see that they’ve (or previous owners) have used it for years. So obviously reliable. And then when hearing them, well said Mex Fenders/Squiers/Epiphones sounded great, more than up to the job. It did make me question my need to only have/play US Fenders (and still does, it’s just something I can’t seem to get past).
  16. Yes, I read somewhere that for years in the early 70s he wanted a Fender Precision but that as the basses he already had were sufficient for his needs he resisted the urge, stating he’d been brought up to look by after whatever money he had.
  17. I remember seeing a band called Scam69 do No More Heroes by The Stranglers where the guitarist played the keyboard line and being pretty amazed by that. Later on they did Dreaming by Blondie and the male vocalist hit all the high notes, again was amazed as those are high notes.
  18. A fair few in the punk/Oi world that have been pros for years use Mex Fenders, Squiers & Epiphones.
  19. Both written by Laurie Johnson, wonder how many other TV themes he wrote
  20. Yeah, I was one of those who sheered, probably fuelled by my then girlfriend’s infatuation with JT. I simply knew he couldn’t play, and that the bass was all done by Nick Rhodes’ keyboards.
  21. At the Rebellion Festival last year they played the theme to The Long Good Friday as intro music to a few bands and I thought that was good, but the above would top that imo.
  22. Some songs that people know but don’t rave about so that when the band come on they’re not overshadowed by the recorded material that has preceded them.
  23. I think the thing about his sound was about how well it fitted The Stranglers. His playing style and sound gave the band a different edge, made them stand out from the crowd so to speak.
