I use the Sansamp Para Driver. It’s pretty similar to theit Bass Driver, but has sweepable adjustable mid-range, and a selectable filter that removes all the sub-bass frequencies. Also like the Bass Driver it has the blend control so it’s a very versatile pedal.
Well aside from that the HLF is a deeper more low-end biased cab, it’s also 4ohms and a fair bit bigger, though has inbuilt castors you help move it about. I used each amp with different amps & bands so difficult to be objective but I’d say the HE was more what I would recognise as the traditional Ampeg sound.
I had an SVT410HE and it was a nice sounding cab, nice balanced sound, and used an SVT410HLF on tour last year, again nice cab. They have a reputation for being very low end biased but as I had a twangy overdrive sound it worked very well.
Very good points Chris, I prefer the bigger heavier amps but have had to acknowledge that my body can’t deal with them anymore. So in that case, I got what I considered the best amp in an easily carried format. I keep looking at heavier - and I only mean about 13kgs - amps, but my 2.5kg amp is the right choice for my circumstances. And it’s not like I’m going to get younger or more able bodied so I just have to make sure I stay strong of mind and resist weightier temptation.
I really wish I could get past myself in the thought that I’m not a serious bassist unless my Fenders are US made. As I’ve said the Squiers that I’ve had have been a joy to play and have sounded fine. It’s not even the thought of others judging me, it’s purely this devil on my shoulder telling me they have to be US made.
All of my basses are pretty expensive, but I recall buying a Squier Precision that I couldn’t put down. Similarly my Squier VM77 Jazz, whilst its not as good as my US Jazz I really enjoy playing it.
Yes, it’s taken me along a long and interesting journey to realise that the tone I use at home isn’t the right one for band use, and that a scratchy/rattly/gainy sound isolated comes across in the mix as a really good bass presence. All learned via Basschat I should add, though I’m sure someone somewhere will provide statistics that prove otherwise 🤣
I’ve found that it seems to give a slightly higher tension. And it might be all in the mind but it seems to be a deeper more resonant sound. Though to be honest I string through the body mainly to both stop the ferrules in the back possibly falling out, plus in case of string breakage, it’s much easier to get the strings out than if strung through the hi-mass bridge - the ball ends can get pretty tight in there.
I hope I’m as good as her when I get to her age.
Wait a minute......
But seriously, she really is very good, and as said, has groove - perfect playing without it just sounds sterile to me, but her playing just grooves nicely.
From what I’ve read the 3eq has a low pass filter in it, making it more focused. You can get near the 2 with the 3 but in my limited experience with ‘Rays it’s not the same. There’s just more grunt to the 2 in flat mode than the 3.
The Classic 50s I had was a very aggressive, growly Precision. Similarly when I played another Basschatters Classic 50s it was the same. Big thick chunky maple neck on it.
