Fender Rumble, Ashdown Rootmaster or Studio, Markbass CMD will all do it. Markbass will be slightly less versatile as doesn’t have gain/drive, but sounds great with a Precision for classic rock. Personally I’d discount the Trace Elf & 2x8 for gigging, I’d want power in reserve, not to have to push my gear to near its limits all the time.

JJ of The Last Resort has one very much like this in their video of Never Get a Job :

Fender Precision US v current Musicman Cutlass
Lozz196 replied to Slick Bass's topic in Bass Guitars
Having a MM Stingray I’d agree that it’s a higher standard than Fender (and I’m a Fender fanboi) so I’d expect the Cutlass to follow suit. As said though, resale on a Fender is likely to be easier. -
I like Markbass gear but for me it’s far more suited to “warmer” basses such as Precisions. I also find their cabs to have a high end roll off as well - get a sound from a Markbass amp into a Markbass cab, DI that sound and it’s much toppier/treblier through the PA. We’re all likely to recommend what we use ourselves, and I’m no different, Ashdown, however their top man Mark used to work at Trace so there’s a connection to the gear that you loved there. Their RM cabs are plenty light enough, pair them with one of their ABM amps which again are light enough, but which aren’t class D, they have real punch and depth to the sound, and you’d have a rig that would probably fit much better with what you’re after.

A few tracks where I’ve particularly loved the bass sound have been, in no particular order: Eton Rifles by The Jam - Bruce Foxton using a Fender Precision, think he used Marshall amps at the time Hanging Around by The Stranglers - JJ Burnel using a Fender Precision, think it was Hiwatt amps Down on The Farm by Guns N Roses - Duff McKagan using a Fender Jazz Bass Special into Gallien Krueger amps American Man by Velvet Revolver - Duff with same bass/amps as above

SOLD- Ashdown ABM EVO-IV 410 Cab - £250
Lozz196 replied to Lozz196's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Thanks, it’s the nearest I could get in power/quality of sound to the classic SVT valve amp/fridge set up (imo it gets there no trouble) but in a format that is both doable by one person, and can fit in most regular hatchback cars. Added benefit of Ashdown being UK based as well, so should there be any issues I could drive the gear there myself to be looked at - never had to mind, but it’s reassuring to know. -
I remember that rig, Tim, amazing amount and quality of sound from that little set up.

Do flatwounds without the silks exist?
Lozz196 replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Accessories and Misc
I sympathise, I can only deal with either red silks or plain metal strings, nothing else will do. Why red, well for years I used Rotosounds and they’re red, so I’m used to that, as such anything else I find off putting. -
Don’t use Parcelforce. Repeat, don’t use Parcelforce. I have nothing against them, just that their T&Cs prohibit insurance payout on musical instruments. In general I’ve used Interparcel and more often than not chosen UPS from Interparcel’s options.

Any inexpensive aggressive sounding P pickups around?
Lozz196 replied to shoulderpet's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have a Vintage Tony Butler Precision with and as @PaulWarning has said the Wilkinson pickups in that are very similar sounding to those in US Precisions. Which in turn are also very similar in sound to the SD Steve Harris, however the Steve Harris is a tad more aggressive and breaks up quicker into gain/drive/growl. -
Requires a lot of discipline does AC/DC material, it’s so tempting to try and make it interesting to play on bass, but it then ruins the overall feel.
-
Really like that, great recording and really good sounds on all of the individual instruments - that Precision sounds awesome. The song and performance reminded me a touch of REM.
-
I do this on all my Precisions, and on the ones that have hummed a but it’s stopped it completely.
-
Def not wrong there, my first "proper" bass was a Yamaha, great player, great sound, great working bass all round.
-
That’s a great looking bass.
-
Ashdown seem to like the Beta 10, that’s what they recommended and fitted for me in my RM210 cabs. And I’m very glad they did, I liked the sound of the cabs before, absolutely love them now.
-
Well they’re made of different materials, and if voices to be like their decades I’d expect the 60s to be warmer sounding, the 70s to be snappier. Both look great, I’ve played one of the 60s ones and it was a really nice bass, felt great to play.
-
The Vintage V4 is a great bass, I have the Tony Butler Sig version and it’s a seriously good instrument, not just for the money, just good full stop. The necks are quite chunky on them, and the pickups - certainly the ones in my TB - sound very similar to the Custom Shop 62s that came in Fender US Standards. I’ve not played a CV Precision but I do have a VM77 Jazz and as above, great instrument, I can’t think that the quality of the CV Precision wouldn’t at least match the VM. So I’d be happy with either.
-
Given your comment, like the deep bass, Precision sound I’d recommend the Squier. When starting out I too loved the Precision sound, virtually all of my fave bassists played them. So what did I do, I bought basses other than Precisions and tried to get the Precision sound on them. When I finally bought one it suddenly clicked, there was what I’d been chasing all along. So save yourself the trouble, get the bass that makes the sound you like. Additionally the Squiers are very good basses, and should you - you will - decide to upgrade later on the CV will be a great backup bass. I have a Squier VM77 Jazz and the quality for a so-called budget instrument is amazing.
-
Know what you mean, I quit my band at the start of this year as the gigging/touring was getting too much for me and I needed a break.
-
Blimey, you learn something new every day.
-
Probably my fave Elvis song, and a good possibility that’s due to the bass line, one of Jerry Scheffs finest.

Sting Fender Signature Model - Who has/had one?
Lozz196 replied to BassApprentice's topic in Bass Guitars
I love the 51s, there’s something special about them, never tried the Sting but am sure that those contours must make them a lot easier to play/wear.
