  1. When I’ve done string-thru on my basses I’ve thought that the tone was less twangy.
  2. “Nothing grabs him” well as the singer he should realise that although songs need great riffs, it’s in general the vocal melodies that are put over them that sell the songs. Which is his job, you’ve done your bit, it’s now over to him to get his creativity in gear. Maybe that’s the problem?
  3. Good news Ash, enjoy the bass (I have one of these and they really are very good indeed).
  4. I would have thought it a bit more than that. If equating it to beer, in 1983 when I started drinking a pint was 50p, so £50 = 100 pints. A 100 pints now where I live is around £400+. Not the most scientific way of working it out but it usually pans out roughly.
  5. The Vapors
  6. The 2003 rosewood Jazz doesn’t sound quite as bright to me, which is what I’ve found with my two Jazzes, both US Professional, same make of strings etc.
  7. It took me years to work out what bass it was that Ali McCordie used, thankfully Basschat helped out. I suppose at some point I really should at least try one out given how much I loved (still do btw) SLF.
  8. Def worth it, the ABM600 is the best amp I’ve ever had, incredibly versatile and a really powerful sound. Plus based in the UK so in the unlikely case of any issues easy to get sorted, and for a TE fan such as yourself Mark Gooday who runs Ashdown was at TE.
  9. I found the same on my old Aerodyne Jazz, did a bit of research and chose the Seymour Duncan Hot Stack, sounds just like a Jazz bass pickup so doesn’t affect the tone, but just gives you a lot more of it, say an extra 15 - 20%.
  10. I found the SPB1 to have no mids or presence in the mix, whereas the Thumper has enough, and coupled with being more overwound sat great in the mix. Really good pickups.

They are a great pedal, and extremely good value.
  12. Def. And there’s currently one up for grabs on here too.
  13. So who got it this time?
  14. That is the book of knowledge, and a great reference point.
  15. Too many by The Jam to name all, but Tube Station, Eton Rifles, Going Underground, Funeral Pyre and It’s Too Bad are particular faves, as are Pump it Up by Elvis Costello and Livin on a Prayer & It’s My Life by Bon Jovi.
  16. I’ll try and get as near as possible, and realise with this one it really is a case of slow but sure, learn separate parts at a time then join up at a later point. Doesn’t help that all tab online is in A, so as well as an already complicated song every nite has to be dropped 2 frets.
  17. Resurrection time - having to learn this for my current band, monster bass-line, respect @neilmurraybass I suspect this one`s gonna take me some time!
  18. That’s a good point, the band I’m currently in plays classic rock - Zeppelin, Purple, Rainbow etc - so I’ve been buying that and listening to it, as well as both enjoying it it helps me get in the mindset for playing it.
  19. Would have been a Sex Pistols song, possibly I Wanna Be Me as it’s very easy.
  20. Yes, the Player pickups are a good improvement on previous MIM pickups. I fully expected to have to swap mine out to make it nearer in sound to my US Precision with CS62s, but found I didn’t need to, all I had to do was lower the hi-mids a tad and it was near enough for gig purposes.
  21. Having great difficulty telling myself I don’t need this 😁
  22. I used one on tour last year and really liked it. I do however have a twangy/driven tone so was able to achieve the twang & grind easily whilst the HLFs natural lows stayed really prominent. I can see that someone wanting a traditional bass tone might find the low-end a tad overpowering though.
  23. Me too, and given the last few actual Bond themes I suspect I will far prefer the above.
  24. I def think the wood of the body of the instrument has more effect on the sounds of instruments. Years ago I looked at two Epiphone Thunderbirds, one made of alder, one made of mahogany. The specs on each instrument, going by the website were the same, yet the sound most definitely was not. Even Mrs Richards from Fawlty Towers would have heard the difference.
