  1. I wouldn’t want to name the ones I know, but there are a fair few seasoned pros on the punk/Oi scene that use MIM Fenders. And they sound great too.
  2. It`s worth trying to get over that phobia. I`ve just bought a Squier VM77 Jazz Bass and aside from the pickups which I`m changing due to very low output it`s a cracking bass. I`ve had numerous Jazzes and never really connected with any until this one.
  3. I hadn’t noticed the neck/bridge aspect but that suits me anyway, even more pleased now, cheers.
  4. Usually they are pretty high in sensitivity, think the ones I had were about 103/104
  5. Pretty much what the others have said, seem to be voiced more for live performance. The other thing is that the dispersion of sound is probably the best I`ve ever had from any cab, you need to move almost next to the cab for the sound to change, unlike many others where simply straying a step to one side or the other means much of the high-end is lost.
  6. I`ve just bought a Squier VM 77 Jazz and the output of the stock pups is low, so have looked at a pickup swap. After trawling the net I happened on Fender Vintage 74s, and the description plus online demos is pretty much as you describe - which is what I`m also after from the VM77 so have ordered a set.
  7. Really interested in these, but just one question, has anyone found a hard case for them at all?
  8. Or is it that they`re using the new so-called improved technology and can`t make a silk purse from a sows ear? I recall seeing The Darkness in the NEC in about 2006 and the PA speakers were the stacked vertically type that we`re told is the only way sound can be. And the sound was awful. Have seen them in other venues with traditional PA stacks, big blocks of speakers and they sounded great.
  9. At present looks like I can make it this year, be nice as had to miss the last couple due to gigging/tours etc.
  10. I think you can get live-in ones from recall, makes gigging nice & easy, unzip front & back, sorted.
  11. Strange isn’t it, a lot of this tech stuff is the emperors new clothes methinks, given how many of us hear pony sound nowadays.
  12. And then we moan about them only rehashing the old faves, looks like they can’t win doesn’t it. For me if they constantly improve Precision, Jazz etc that’s enough, an occasional special excellent but keep the old faves updated and in some competition with their rivals.
  13. Yeah they’ve changed: US Standard - Professional American Special - Performer Standard - Player Why not change the name of the Classic range as well?
  14. I’ve often wondered why they don’t do a 60s Precision in these ranges, an sure they ‘d be good sellers.
  15. Ive just used the copper tape on the scratch plates on my basses and it’s worked fine.
  16. I think he missed his calling, auditions for Motley Crue were in 1980!
  17. Well I received my latest Player Precision today. And it’s got to go back. There’s a slight bulge between frets 0 - 5 on the G string side. Blasted Fender quality control. I might not have noticed it had it not been that I already have one of these basses, the neck on the new one just felt more of a handful so I carefully examined/measured it - all seemed the same, so what was happening? I then found the bulge after closer examination. It makes the neck feel much chunkier so no way would I keep it, especially as my reasons for buying these basses is for a slimmer neck due to hand/wrist pain. Luckily I’ve kept the packaging etc. Bah!!
  18. Yeah I suppose as I’ve been playing them for years they just seem simple now.
  19. Oh yes, the only cover our band will do. Don’t play it often but it’s a treat for me when we do.
  20. Tube Station/Eton Rifles by The Jam - in fact many too many Jam songs to list imo.
