Did you get nickels rather than steels, nickels have been blue silks since at least 2013.

You can certainly hear that Rick in there, Col, great overall sound for the band as well.

Good call, a couple of 210s a lot more manageable than a single 410 (for the more mature of us, shall we say, I’m sure the younglings shoulder press 410s, one in each hand).

I’ve recently been considering getting a 5 string but the above is similar to my fear of OCD dictating I’ll have to have a matching 5-er for all my 4s, so have decided to only go 5when I actually need to.

Yep, Markbass, G1 or G2 Barefaced, plus my faves the Ashdown RM range, all will do the job very well.

As per Lens post, politics, known affiliation with either side and I’m not playing. I also won’t do anything with religious affiliations.

I work in facilities, looking after a big industrial unit. Given that I have no practical skills at all it might seem strange, but my role is more to arrange repairs than carry them out. It also includes health & safety, fire, and ensuring compliance, plus I do staff training as well. Pretty varied, short hours, flexible hours, lots of annual leave and a decent pension. All if which suit me rather well.

We had the jar-thing in a venue in Bremen that we played, was quite amazed at the money we made, who knows, maybe they just paid for us to stop....

I’m going to go against the trend here and say do all you can to get the best instrument that’s achievable within your means, nothing like playing on an instrument that you really love and gel with.

So, update on this, as is traditional with me I found that I just didn’t enjoy the bass with flats on it (the only bass/flats combination I can deal with is a Precision/TIs) so it now has a set of 50-105 nickel Elixirs and I’m getting near to the sound in my head that I want from it. Will take a bit of tweaking live via my Para Driver but nearly there, a bit of grit dialled in and it’s sounding great. And it is making me play with a much more measured style. Plus at present it’s my fave bass to play, really enjoying this bass.

Like that Tim, got a sort of Tom Petty type feel to it.

And sound great with Fender style basses.

It’s funny but that tone on its own sounds a bit tinny and gutless to me but I’d bet in the mix it translates to a really good thudding bass.

Agree, at the moment for what I’m doing the non-colouring of the sound would make the MXR ideal.

I find this on the break in Dazed & Confused by Led Zep, after a while my left hand just wants to do something else irrespective of what I tell it.

I found the MXR to be much less coloured in the sound, unlike the Tech21 products. Which is why at the time I didn’t keep hold of it.

As an Ashdown uberfanboi I’ll always recommend their gear, but would say if wanting the Trace sound then buy Trace, I’ve not played through anything else that has that distinct sound.

The above details why I left my band, though the journeys for us were more like 3 or 4 hours in most cases. Add in European gigs, be they flying or van/ferry gigs and it’s very easy to become very tired when trying to fit it all around a full time job.

I’ve had a good few, Ampeg, Markbass, GK, TC Electronic, Orange, Aguilar, all been good but the one I’ve liked most and which I’m keeping hold of is my Ashdown RM500 EVOII. I can get pretty much any sound that I want from it, and it has a depth to the sound that the others - well apart from the Orange Terror - didn’t have.

I think that those who scoff at that are truly mad, ABBA were the perfect pop song band.

Having had both I don’t think there’s that much difference in the core, flat tone, however for me the RM is much more flexible on the eq.

And a further update, as we’re playing covers one of the songs, The Devils Bleeding Crown, by Volbeat is a real cracker and I’ve really got into the band, they’re absolutely amazing. If I’d not been fortunate enough to be asked to do this ‘band’ I’d never of heard of them. Only downside is that tickets for their Bristol gig are already sold out, bah!

Most of my basses are under 9lbs, and many around the 8.5lb mark. Makes me wonder how I ever survived my 70s Precisions at 10+lbs.

Quite agree, in Europe you get fed, watered, and offered accommodation. Usually the food is both snacks and a hot meal. In the UK at most venues you’re lucky to get a farkoff at the end of the evening.
