  1. Welcome to the forum, caretaker, from another Herts based bassist (Hemel Hempstead)
  2. Perfect for on-stage monitoring if playing with FOH I`d think. You can even max out and get the 12" version. If like me you get all your eq from a pre-amp pedal I daresay this could be an ideal backup in the van type of bit of gear as well.
  3. Yep, gold not for me, not keen on black either, traditional silver/chrome/nickel all the way.
  4. Not good, not an easy place to get upstairs to anyway, even without an 810. Reminds me of helping The Last Resort carry their flightcased Ampeg SVT & 810 out of the back of The 100 Club - only 3 flights of stairs.
  5. That`s good advice Mick, especially for those like msyelf who aren`t keen on TE cabs anyway. Plenty enough lightweight cabs around nowadays to still have the TE sound if required.
  6. Great amps, would recommend these in a heartbeat
  7. Nice review, Mark. I`ve always liked TE amps, it was the cabs that I found weren`t much to my liking, but after a bit of working out why, it`s they seem to have a hi-mid boost at a frequency that "grates" on my ears. So now if connecting up to one I just lower hi-mids and sorted. I do remember in my old band the other bassist - yes we had two - had a small TE combo, weighed a ton, but that one combo with its 1x15 speaker had no trouble keeping up with the rest of the band and my 500 watt Class D head & 4ohm 4x10 cab. In fact it was us who had trouble keeping up with him, those TE watts are indeed different watts! Hope all work out well with the new band too.
  8. There`s a thickness & thud to that sound that just doesn`t seem to be around nowadays.
  9. Rotosound R66LD steel rounds. Great tone, only problem is you get about a month out of them then they dull down a fair bit. I`ve tried numerous brands and none can get me that aggressive Roto twang.
  10. I used one as a privided rig a couple of months ago. I thought it was great, though had the same issues, a lot of low-end. Then I remembered these kind-of topics, that the flat setting is bass backed off so went with that and hey presto. And every band who used the rig sounded great, an array of Precisions, Jazzes and Ricks, all sounded amazing.
  11. Maybe contact Martin Herrick, of Herrick Pickups for his advice: https://www.herrickpickups.com/
  12. Yep there are younger bands coming through but mainly both audience and bands alike at the gigs I play and go to, the majority are 40s plus. Probably cos live music is what we grew up with, people playing real instruments to people watching & listening. That`s not knocking what`s current, that`s just what we are used to.
  13. As one of the purchasers I can def confirm that, unfortunately I went a bit mad and bought far too many basses so had to offload, but they really are cracking basses.
  14. It`s not so much volume as such, it`s more that the sound is - generally - bigger/fuller with more speakers, so that gives the impression of being louder. Running the LH500 with a 250 watt 1x15 should be ok, you just have to use your ears to make sure that you`re not over-loading it, checking for farty/flubbing noises, and also don`t put too much low-end into it.
  15. If you`ve been really impressed with the RH750, I`d say go for that. The ears are always the ones that make the best choices.
  16. Well the TC 208 can connect up to an extension speaker, giving you 250 watts in total, positives being a 1x15 and 2x8 giving a (probably) fuller sound due to more speakers. Only downside is pairing different speaker sizes can sometimes not work too well - especially if not the same brand. That said, I`ve always lucked out and never had an issue with it myself. Worth taking a punt on that, you can always send it back if it didn`t work, providing you chooese the right seller and return within their specified tim.
  17. Ah, a fellow Dirt Box fan, Roger. They`re a great band, and great guys as well.
  18. On a serious note, I do think it`s down to the specific instrument, not the year it was made. I had three 70s Precisions, a 77 in white/rosewood, and two 78s in black/maple. One of the 78s weighed 10+ lbs and sounded amazing, the most aggressive Precision I've ever played, I nicknamed it Ian Paisley as it barked at you (so it did). The other 78 weighed about 8lbs, sounded fine, as did the 77 which was about 10.5lbs. Major different weights of supposedly the same build-materials, and radically different sound from one of them. And a mate has a white/rosewood 77 that weighs 13lbs! Just like in The Life of Brian, they are all individuals.
  19. Only cos Mr Secret Police Rickybocker has been monitoring all for sale ads...................
  20. Agree with the thoughts on trying out as many as possible in music shops, but also check out as many bands as possible to see which instruments you like the sound of in a live mix. Yes, many of those may be over budget, but if every time you see someone playing a Jazz bass you like the sound of it more than any others that`s also giving you a lead to which instruments to pay more attention to.
  21. I think they`re a good idea, however can a bit impractical on a multi-band bill, with only 15 minute changeovers between each band. Must admit though, it`s a great one for the photo-album playing on stage in front of your fave bands backdrop when you`ve been lucky enough to gig with them.
  22. If I recall correctly the Ampeg SVT3PRO has similar instructions/guidelines. I`ve always taken the "set the Gain to where the needle hits the red on hardest notes" approach on my amps, figuring that`s why it`s there.
  23. I think I`m going to have to check out the Laquer ones then. Drat, just as I was being sensible and selling gear I no longer needed.
  24. I`ve been tryin to resist even checking those ones out, Dave, as I fear they may bankrupt me. I just loved the worn-in feeling of the necks on the RWs, which I didn`t get from the Classic 50. Great chunky neck, but that well-played feeling isn`t there, for me.
  25. Yep, for the same size/footprint as a 50 watt combo you could pick up a decent enough 1x12 cab and something like a Gallien Krueger MB200 or TC Electronic BH250 off of here/gumtree/ebay 2nd hand, and then have plenty enough power. Probably do that for £350ish, maybe less.
