1. Yep, 51 and in an originals street-punk band. Travel all over the country, and into Europe, released 3 albums, get to play with bands I`ve liked for years (some that I watched as a kid on Top of The Pops). Do it, it`s great fun.
2. Our singer/guitarist gets all our gigs, but in all honesty he rarely has to ask for gigs now, we get asked to do more than we`re able to do so have to pick amongst them. Not for the better venues or stuff like that, but for those more suitable in terms of locations/other bands on the bill etc. We don`t like to play in only one area, so try and keep the gigs well spaced out (countrywide).
3.
where did you see that?
Info below http://www.solidentertainments.com/punk/ilfracombe/index.html
4. We played a couple of years ago and The Buzzcocks, Anti Nowhere League and a few other bigger bands were on. It`s been cancelled due to works at the camp having been brought forward apparently. I feel really sorry for the promoters, from what I understand they`ve been trying to move it to other suitable venues but struggled, so now got the unenviable task of refunds. They`re decent people, helped us a good bit, shame this has happened.
5.
just read the Ilfacombe festival has been cancelled
Yeah, bit of a swine that, was looking forward to a 3 gig weekend, now down to just the two (and having to try and convince the hotel to do a swap on bookings as - yet again - we stoopidly went for the cheaper no refund option).
6. On a 9 band bill, set-up/break down time is very important, usually 15mins between bands, so being quick is helpful.
7. Well I`ve hopefully learned from it, but I sold an Ashdown ABM 410 & 210, only to realise they were what worked best for me, so have bought the same again. Likewise I had a Mex Precision as backup, sold it, realised the error of my ways so bought another. Recently been trying to sort the best backup amp head, think I`m there but................... Edit - it finally hit me, I had the best backup amp for my needs, an Ashdown Rootmaster 500, so yep, I`ve gone and got another on the way. When will I learn, I had exactly all the right gear in January for my needs, now got a ton - literally I reckon - of stuff to move on.
8. If using full rig of amp/cab/pedals/bass etc less than 10mins, prob 5 or so. As a band we rarely do gigs where we have to use all of our own backline. The best i saw was Booze & Glory, they could do their whole backline in about 15 - 20mins including drums.
9. I used to select both the Ultra-Low and Ultra-Hi buttons for live work (Ultra-Hi off for recording). Gain set as per the manual, lighting up on the hardest hit notes. All other eq set at midday, and compression on about 3. Sounded really nice.
10. I`ve played through a TC rig with RS210 & 112, sounded great, but I`d go for Bills recommendation of getting the same cab again. If you like your current sound, doubling it will make a very large grin appear, plus with two identical cabs, no need to re-eq if only using one of them. Whereas the 210/112/115 are all likely to be voiced differently - nothing to do with driver size I should add - so then your sound is made of two different voiced cabs making replicating that sound with either on its own potentially difficult.
11. Yep, RMs are great amps. I know it shouldn`t make any difference but on the punk scene bands with little amps/cabs are still viewed as not being "proper" bands, so until they are ABMs all the way for me, but the RMs are plenty amp enough for all but the biggest stages. Once I hang up my punk boots - or when I get too old and knackered to carry anything heavier than 10lbs - it will be Ashdown RMs all the way for me.
12. 4 a side, not cos I`m Fender biased, it`s just easier knowing they all turn the same way to tune up/down.
13. Got a gig coming up next weekend where I`m having to travel light. Just assembled the Vertigo & Tick together for the first time this morning, packed it all and I can get everything I need for a gig in the pair, aside from my amp of course. Well chuffed.
14. I most certainly will be, Bas. Aguilar Tonehammer is also great for a really vintagey sound, plus as Danny says, Tech21 VT as well.
15. Nothing wrong with using whatever fits best, be it a gigging rig or a small practice amp. I use a small practice amp, but in the past when I only had one rig/set-up would use my gigging rig.
16. Get a Barefaced Super12 or Super Twin, chuck in a Sansamp or Behringer BDI21 for eq - the TH500 will get nearly there, these just add in that little bit extra - and just stand back with a smile.
17. I`ve got Mono gig-bags, a Vertigo and an M80. For touring I put my basses in Hiscox hard cases, but reular gigging where the bass is in my/the singers car, the Monos are fine.
18. It was bought in 2013, no idea if made that year or earlier though.
19. Yep they`re pretty good on help/advice, got to be worth a phone call or e-mail.
20. Hmmmm, difficult one, I had one in 2011 and it was great, 3 hour rehearsals, hour long gigs, day long recording sessions no problems. Moved it on. Fast forward a couple of years, bought another, didn`t make it through the first rehearsal before a burning smell and smoke made guest appearances. If you get a good one they`re great, but it rather put me off of them. Not heard of any issues re the 800 version though, so may be a safer bet.
21. My US 2015 Fender Standard Precision. Since joining Basschat I`ve flitted from bass to bass to bass, but since getting this one in 2015 it`s all I`ve used for the band in gigs, rehearsals, recordings an videos. I`ve got another identical one for home use, in the hope that a set of strings will last me a month or so on the gigging one (Rotos, sound great, very premature in the deadening aspect). Both are black/black/maple. I have a white/black/maple one as well, but really want a white/black/rosewood one, so this one will be leaving the herd.
22. Black is good for indie, black skinny jeans, converse or DMs, t-shirt with a black fairly baggy shirt over that. Couple of black leather bangle-type things on your wrists for extra effect if required, but don`t go over the top, less is more authentic.
