  1. That was pretty much it for me too - I bought a Precision, played it at home and was pretty underwhelmed with it considering how many of my fave bassists played them. Then took it to band practice and it all made sense. I`ve found that basses I like the sound of played on their own, such as Jazzes & Stingrays just don`t work for me in a band setting, but the Precision that has a fairly ordinary sound on its own is the master in the mix.
  2. I`m the same, but opposite, one tone knob, on full all the time. My ideal tone was on an Ampeg PF500 a few years ago, all eq set at midday, both Low & High presets selected, a tad of on-board compression. Was P-Bass heaven, imo.
  3. Yeah, when I had the Two10 & Four10 I`m pretty sure I`d have got the tone I was after if all speakers had been full range, but then I need a lot of treble/twang and the low-only cones made this almost impossible. Great sounding cabs for anything else though, am pretty sure in later life if I have a change of music genre I`ll be back to a couple of the Two10s.
  4. That would be gibbon-tastic
  5. I`d love for it to work for me but I have tried and the aggressiveness and attack are lost. Being in a 3 piece street punk band, where my sound is somewhere between JJ Burnell, Duff McKagan & Lemmy the "strength of hit" is where it`s at. The only time I ever really found playing lighter to work was one band practice where it was so hot in the rehearsal room I couldn`t be fussed to play with my usual attack, so turned up louder/hit softer and admit that I really enjoyed it, but that was in a different band where it fitted far better. In all honesty I thought the tone was better too as a result, but again, different band, different needs.
  6. Not UK, but I played in Greece last weekend and of the 6 bands on the bill 2 of the bassists were female. I never think of it as a gender thing, it`s an instrument, they`re not gender specific, though have read on here that one of the female bassists on here has mentioned that people think it strange that ladies play bass. Don`t know why, maybe it`s to do with the size of the instrument and that in general ladies are smaller than men, so people questioning the reach element maybe?
  7. And don`t forget the on-board eq on that `Ray, Pete,
  8. Another "amp I use" recommendation, the Ashdown ABM600. It has valve pre-amp so can be set thick/warm etc, but if wanting the solid-state quick response just leave this off - that`s what I do. My two fave set-ups to play through are Ashdown ABMs & Ampeg SVTs, so when buying my amp went for the one I could lift out of the two
  9. Did my first flying gig last weekend. Bass in Hiscox case, paid to go in the hold. All went fine, though the first thing we did when getting the guitars off of the carousel was open the case and check them. Neither were checked on the way out, but we both had stickers on the cases saying they`d been inspected on the way back to the UK.
  10. I wanted to watch it for The Foo Fighters, but that was all and couldn`t be bothered with the other more current stuff, so I`ll wait to see their performance on Youtube.
  11. A lot. I found that the Compact on its own was very warm and rounded, the Midget on its own a bit barky and mid-focused, but together they just worked so well.
  12. Bottles of water on stage, but on the stage itself, not on my amp/the amp I`m using. And if I`ve lent my amp to anyone and they put drinks on it I`ll happily walk on stage whilst they`re playing and remove them. How very dare they!
  13. Look at a pre 2008 Mex Precision - although the nut width is regular Precision size the necks aren`t as "full" in the hand. Even the post 2012s aren`t as chunky in the hand as the US equivalent.
  14. The Gen3 are pretty much the flattest/most uncoloured sounding cabs I`ve used. When I recorded the sound I heard from the desk was virtually exactly what I got from my Gen 3 Big Twin. So really, choose the Gen 3 cab that fits best for size and practicality. for what it`s worth I was really impressed with the Super Midget - an amazing amount of sound from those little cabs.
  15. They`re pretty good - I find them more twangy & aggressive sounding than the ones in the US models but a factor in that might be down to the use of better woods & materials in the US models.
  16. That`s about it for me too. If I turn up louder and play lighter the sound just isn`t the same.
  17. We were doing it for a while, but dropped it, Warhead by The UK Subs.
  18. Wow, that`s rotten, as in Nov last year I bought a Fender pickup from the US and including shipping/import etc it still worked out about £30 cheaper than buying the item here or in Europe.
  19. That does rate highly on the Hideous Scale
  20. Shouldn`t be a problem. If it doesn`t fit that`s unlikely to be the cause.
  21. Yep, can def depend on the player - the luthier I take my basses to can get the action ridiculously low, and for someone who plays unlike a cave-man it must be great, but for my style both action has to be raised, neck relief put in and pickups lowered in order for me to play the way I do.
  22. Yep, not sure how the trend is going to go, if they keep gaining value then spending even £900 is worth it as an investment. I`ve played a couple of JVs, they are great basses to play, not sure I`d want to gig one if I`d bought it as an increasing-value investment though, however as a home player would be a nice bass to have.
  23. The MBC115 is a decent enough cab, but is fairly heavy, and is much more low-end focused than a TE 410 - when I used mine as a standalone you could feel the notes but not necessarily hear them that well in the mix, even with highs and mids upped considerably on my amp.
