1. I`ve found Ashdown to be very good re customer service issues, it`s a shame Ampeg aren`t such good performers on this.
2. Great demo by Dood, and imo a great all round pedal. If I spent a lot of time in the studio/needed a lot of tone-shaping I`d be all over one of these. Alas, one sound only for me, which my trusty Tech21 Para Driver already gives, so no need of one of these (but a good deal of want, lol).
3. Only play at Oi gigs, as the regular audience don't tolerate the black Friday idiots
4. Imported Norse DOOM could be a selling point, nowt more DOOM than those Norsemen on their travels.
5.
Thanks all of you for your excellent answers!! Seems like it's agreed on the fender original vintage precision pu:s, so I think I will have a go at them. Both of the ones linked in the quotes below are the vintage ones right?
Yep, those are the ones. Confusingly listed as Original, Vintage, Original Vintage, or Vintage Original, depending on which site you look on. They have that "woody" tone that earlier Precisions seemed to have, before outputs were upped. Great pickup for a vintage sounding bass.
6. That mouse organ pushes a lot of volume..................
7. I`m a bit surprised, I always thought I was a bit of a caveman but just measured up and about 2.5mm so looks like as per Fender spec.
8. The Ashdown Original looks a good little amp - 300 watts at 4ohms, small, light, and no frills.
9. The Custom Shop 62 one sounds deeper and fuller to me, so I`d probably plump for the Originals.
10. The White Stripes, Ting Tings, Royal Blood, all duos, all with a drummer. I do agree though, contact the venue and advise of the set-up, no point in having the possible argument/discussion on the day, get it sorted beforehand.
11. Yep, I think it`s the body shape, and the angle of strings across the bridge that make the LP style not so good for funky work. For me it`s all about placement of the strumming hand, and the angle at which the arm/hand approaches the guitar, and the construction of the LP prevents said hand getting to the ideal position.
12.
I didn't really think about a second hand American, will have a look and see what's available. Do you think they'd be significantly better than the Waters? I've got an American Standard guitar and it's excellent but, then again, so is the Mexican made 50s Precision! (also, nice Trump comment )
Well imo the pricing reflects the gradient, MIM are good, MIM Classic/Artist Series better, US Standard better still. But all of this is my opinion, not necessarily fact, many will prefer a Mex Standard or a Squier Classic Vibe to a US, but to me the US Standard is king. My particular faves of these are the 1998 - 2003, and 2012 - 2016. The others that I`ve had have been good, but these eras are my faves.
13. I don`t know if you`ll hear much difference volume wise, but that extra 150 watts may be just the difference between the clipping, and not clipping, which is the aim. It has to be worth a try although I`d assume if being on a big enough stage to push a 500 watt amp into clipping surely you`re going through FOH? If so, ask for a better monitor mix.
14. If going up to £800 you`re in the range of a 2nd hand US Standard. Worth considering as imo the best of the bunch. Out of those listed, well I`ve had a good few of the MIMs, and for me the post 2012 ones really are a step up. I`ve currently got one as a backup and it really is a good bass indeed. The RW Sig is nice, wide neck but very playable, and you get the added bonus of having a Mexican Wall before Donald Trump gets his! There`s one on evilbay at present for about £600, providing seller confirms truss-rod ok/neck not bowed def worth a look. SQ Classic Vibe 70s - currently got one and it`s a decent enough bass. I bought it as a backup but due to OCD it being white/rosewood didn`t fit in with the rest of my black/maple basses. I`ll offload at some point, but to be honest I wouldn`t have it as a main instrument. Nothing wrong with it, just that being basswood it`s a lot lighter than what I prefer - I like basses around the 9lb area, and the SQ is a fair bit lighter than that.
15.
Is it good for metal?
With those looks I`d think it would excell at metal. Be a bit like Vyvyan from the Young Ones jacket, Very Metal.
16. Playing at the Ilfacombe Punk Weekender at this venue two years ago led directly to us playing on the main stage at Butlins Skegness Punk Weekender a couple of weeks ago. Where we played to probably 1000 people, and managed to sell a good bit of merch. The Butlins gig was a paid gig, so with our fee from that and merch sales we`ve managed to pay for our hotels for next years Rebellion Festival in Blackpool - all money from gigs/merch goes back into the band, we never take any for ourselves. So doing these types of gigs can really work for you long-term. Of course they don`t always pan out so good, but if you don`t give it a go one things for sure, payment and opportunities will certainly not come your way.
17. Very possibly, Rotosound steel rounds and Fender Precisions are it for me, but when I had a couple of Stingrays said Rotos just didn`t work for my ears, so put Ernie Ball steel rounds on them and hey, suddenly they sounded as I wanted.
18. Wow, that is an amp that looks like it means the business.
19. Check out Black Sweden, they put ABBA lyrics with the proper melodies over rock songs. Their version of Take a Chance On Me played over Metallicas Enter Sandmans music is pretty spectacular as it works so incredibly well.
20. Never a big fan, liked Dear Prudence a hell of a lot, Happy House, and of course Hong Kong Garden. Incidentally, John McKay, the original guitarist is my mates brother, though in the 30+ years we`ve been mates I`ve to this day never met him.
21. I`ve had exactly the same experiences as Luke, Fender Jazzes, just don`t work for me.
22.
Lozz won't be happy....he has to pay for his Aguilar gear.
I`ve moved on Mick, not cos of having to buy Aguilar gear of course, switched to Ashdown as it suited my sound better. Edit - and I have to pay for that too.
23. Yes we played the introducing stage at Butlins last year, Paul, and won, so were fortunate enough to play the main stage this year - what a blast that was. So sometimes doing something on the cheap can really be beneficial, a case of speculate to accumulate, as long as you`re well structured and focused you can really make these events work for you.
24. I`ve found that learning songs from my very younger days - as in primary school age - makes me smile a lot. Of course the charts in the early 70s were a lot of fun anyway so that could be a lot to do with it, but it`s something to maybe think about. I`m unlikely to ever play those songs in a band context, but it takes me back to an age when life was very uncomplicated and happy, whilst doing something that I love in the present. Association I suppose, give it a shot, you never know.
