BF should be fine, though if you want crisp highs look at one of their range that has a tweeter. Even their biggest cab, the Big Twin 2 is an easy lift. Other than that the Ashdown Rootmaster cabs are good, they now do a 410 in this range and they are nice and light/portable, I have the 4ohm version and it`s a great cab.
just got back from the Rebellion Punk Festival, and the sound was very mixed (see wot I did there?) to say the least, outside stage was good but the Empress ballroom on the first couple of days was awful, all bass resonance, and mush, my mate went up to the sound guy during the Leftover Crack set to complain but the sound guy just shrugged his shoulders and pointed at the high ceiling, by Saturday someone had figured out that if you turned down the drums and turned up the guitar you got a decent sound, the other indoor stages suffered as to varying degrees as well, but there was very little bass to be heard all weekend just a low end mush any body else go and have a different opinion?
Sortof, we played on Fri in the Arena. Obviously I didn`t hear that, but the bands which I heard that had a trebly bass, rather than bassy bass (if that makes sense) sounded great. Skurvi for example, in The Pavillion on Thu were excellent, Liams bass having hi-mids and treble boosted, rather than low end, sounded great. Likewise with JJ of The Last Resort in The Empress on Sunday, again a good deal of high-end on his bass. I think that`s the trick to Rebellion as many bands did seem to have a "wampy" sound. I`ve heard a recording of us - it`s on youtube - and my bass was its usual trebly aggressive sound, and clear as anything in the mix. -
Our singer/guitarist hits a note that feeds back, then we all come in. We`ve always started with the same song so people know when they hear that feedback we`re good to go.
Or the alternative title, How Good are Your Speakers.
Very good point, on my laptops speakers I get a hearing age of 60+, when using my extension speakers I get a hearing age of 30 - 40, which isn`t bad as I`m 51. And seeing as in the last 2 weeks I`ve done a 4 consecutive night tour (hour long sets), then played at a 4-day punk festival, I`m quite pleased with this as my hearing has rather taken a battering recently.

Many venues like to use their own DI, rather than a pedal, not really a problem as long as their DI is after the pedal/before the amp in the chain.
-
It`s amazing things like this go on. Luckily on the punk & Oi scene I`ve encountered nothing like this, all venues/.promoters have been nothing less than completely honourable.
-
If you like the 65, it feels good and sounds good, and you can get it for a decent price, it has to be worth getting. In all likelyhood it will only increase in value if it`s all original, so as well as having a great instrument you also have an investment. And really, a P-Bass is Motown, and will certainly cover Floyd and REM as well.

So...why haven't you got a Trace Elliot then..

I`m ok with the amps, but the cabs have always seemed to me to be really trebly. The combos seem to escape this, but the cabs, especially those with 10s in I`ve found to be ear-splitting. -
For the same reason I'm looking into a 6 x 10" tilt back cab , as I have a van , even though the weight would be considerably more as long as the venue doesn't have stairs it should be easier to wheel about .
I`m surprised you`ve not already got the RM610, Kevin. Great cabs, I had a blast through one last year at the LBGS, had a really nice sound to it, punchy and focused. Must admit, if any spare cash comes my way I might end up with one for bigger gigs.

Yep, the SPB-1 is a pretty scooped sounding pickup. Very good at what it does, which is a nice solid low end, with fairly precise highs, but mids, nah, it left those at home.

Some people want to be able to say they`re a musician/play in a band, but don`t appear to actually want to be a musician/play in a band. We see this a lot, people turn up with just guitars/sticks just before they`re meant to be on, expect to use the other bands backlines, then leave as soon as their set is finished. One guy I know put it very aptly, they`re not a band, they`re on a boys night out.

I think a good across the board tone should be able to cover it, but if I went to see a band who did a Stranglers song and the bassist didn`t even attempt to get a JJ like tone I`d be pretty disappointed. But then, out of the whole venue I`d probably be in a group of 1. I don`t see anything wrong with trying to get near without incurring a lot of cost. Sorting a Zoom B3 or similar would be easy enough, and could really make a difference. Sure, most punters won`t notice the difference in bass tone, but I`d bet that they`d think that the band were sounding like the originals, and that has to be the point, making the songs sound better. And having similar tones/sounds to the originals breeds that familiarity, so people will then latch on to the "this band is good" mind-set, which in an ideal, increases gigs/fees/fans.

I have the Ashdown RM414 (a 4ohm 410) and have put some 4" castors on it. It makes it a doddle to wheel about. Getting a set of decent castors will add height to your cab, plus make the actual moving about of it so much easier. I`m 6 foot and the height of the 410 inc the castors is 29"/74cm, and pretty simple to get about. So thinking of the Genz 212 which seems about 78cm you`d add at least 10cm plus make the moving of it way easier.

Recent Lightweight Head/Cab combos within a reasonable budget...
Lozz196 replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think all of the amps mentioned so far are pretty much htting the requirements, though I`ll add in the Ashdown Rootmasters - the 500 is very powerful, so the 800 must be, er, more so. Pretty decently priced new, so plenty left over for cabbage. -
Ashdown LB 30 Any Good??? Bassman - Ampeg B15
Lozz196 replied to Ghost Rider's topic in Amps and Cabs
I bought a new (used) bass today - Precision, natch - and the amp the guy had for me to try it through was an LB30, connected to a matching 1x15 cab. Tell you what, if I ever ditch my punk boots and start up a Motown band the LB is the amp I`d want for it, assuming it would be loud enough of course. Beautiful tones through that amp, made the bass I was buying sound great, way different to my regular assault on the ear-drums for sure. -
Yep, gonna stick with my beloved Rotos. I suppose one saving grace on the fact that they die quickly is that they are pretty much the cheapest strings around, so one set a month isn`t killing me financially. And having just bought yet another Precision today I`m gonna try a set of Roto flats out as well. Not for gigging, just at home use when I want something mellower than clanky-punk.

This seems to be a recurring pattern amongst many genres/areas, bass drum with no actual attack, just made ridiculously loud to compensate. At one gig we played I asked the sound man to add some top-end to the kick drum as our drummer is pretty fast, and all the other bands had a bass drum that was just booming and he said he "knew the room". So why make everyone sound sh*t then was my question (asked after we`d played, I do have some sense, sometimes).
-
When I depped a couple of times I tried to get the bass sounding as near as I could for each track. For example the tone on All Right Now by Free and the tone on Zombie by The Cranberries are pretty different, so I swapped between pickups/adjusted tone on the bass (it was an active bass with P/J pickups). I just wanted to try and be as near as possible. Whereas when I was in a punk covers band I just had one tone and that was it. I suppose what I`m saying is, either can be done, and probably to the ears of the punters - aside from any bassists out there - no-one will really notice.
I think that Lozz had one...
That I did, Mick. Nice case, Precision - what else - fits in it nicely. -
Might be a sideways suggestion, but if you liked the VT500, why not get the VT DI pedal? That way you get the sound you had before, a preamp/DI to use with provided rigs if necessary, and keep the MAG - in my experience Tech 21 pedals pair really well with Ashdown amps.

Calling (Mick) The Greek - he being our resident TE nut, am sure he`ll be along soon to offer advice.
-
TE amps/cabs/combos have a certain colour to the sound that really does punch through, tight and focused but really slams through, probably an upper-mid boost. I`ve also found that the older heavyweight cabs seem to do this much more than the lighter modern ones, having had both but also having had to admit that I can`t manage the older heavyweights anymore.

So changed my regular Roto Steels for a set of Elixir Nanoweb Steels, which I got as part of my subscription to Bass Guitar Mag. Love Rotos, but they give me about 4 maybe 5 gigs then have to change them, so was hoping I`d get longer life from the Elixirs, and have to maybe re-eq a bit. Nah - couldn`t get on with them. If I were doing anything but what I`m currently doing music-wise they`d be fine, but the aggression and punch had left the building - and for those who say this comes from your hands, well checking out my playing style would see that there`s enough aggression there already. It was just the strings, Rotos seem to have an upper-mid punch that I can`t get anywhere else (Elixirs, D`Addario, DRs, Fenders, Dean Markleys so far). Luckily I always have supply of Rotos to hand, so the swap back will take place this eve, was just hoping to get a bit longer life from a set of strings for our tour coming up. Looks like Fast-Fret to the Rotos after each gig then. Bah!
