1. Are they going to gig, as that`s a must, and do they have a particular image as if it`s one I don`t like, nah not for me. Additionally if playing originals is any of the material politically or religiously affiliated as that`s a def no-no for me. From there, well you just have to take it as it comes.
2. Out of all the amps I`ve paired with a Sansamp I`ve found that Ashdown amps just gel best with them. How they would work with a TC cab however is a different matter that I`ve no experience of. However I have used a full RH set-up and it sounded great, I`d prob look more at the 750 than the 450, so as to get the Tweetertone feature.
3. I`ve had a few 210/410 rigs where both cabs were 8ohms. Yes each cab gets the same power, so in the 210 each speaker gets double what the ones in the 410 do - or at least that`s how I understand it. The benefit of the 210 on the top is that you can hear if it struggles - though to get that some serious volume/lows would have to be going, surely. I`ve been very happy with the results such rigs give, so much that I currently have exactly that, a 210/410. Additionally when using same size/brand/range cones the sound is the same, so no need to re-eq each time you use a seperate cab.
4. Ash bodies and 70s spacing. Ash lends itself - at least in my experience - to have less low-mids, giving a more aggressive sound, and being tighter sounding in the lows. Couple that with the 70s spacing of the pickups and there we are, that fantastic scoopy 70s Jazz sound.
5. I`ve got the 100mm ones of those recommended by hamfist. I used self-tappers to attach them to my ABM410. Was a doddle. And they are great wheels, my cab is now faster than my car! But seriously, well worth it.
6. In many cases Mick, the bass & drums are there to make the guitarist and singer sound good - as that`s what audiences listen to/focus on. If we`re on our game and a guitarist is mediocre, most will still think he was great and not know what the hell we`re doing up there. The flip-side to the coin above is that if you and the drummer were both all over the pace you`d never have thought is sounded good, or seen any potential, so look at it is a demon rhythm section doing their bit and laying a solid foundation for the limelight-boys to work over.
7.
Just reading this thread and it occurred to me that in my current band I only use the D twice. A two hour set of covers and I hardly touch it. Mind you, I don't use the G at all...
Pretty much the same for me, I prefer to use the A string for notes above D, as being thicker, and over the bassier part of the pickup on my Precision, the notes have more depth to them.
8. Punk was my inspiration. Probably like many a kid in that era, along came a style of music that for one sounded alive and like nothing I`d ever heard before, and secondly, that if I put a bit of effort in, I`d maybe be able to play it.
9. To die-hard fans they`ll probably notice, to others they probably won`t even care as long as you`re in time and in key (and some might still not care at that point. I`d do the de-tune thing though, playing a high note where it should have gone low isn`t going to feel right to you guys, and that will make cracking the set more laborious.
10. I bought a Yamaha BB1100s in 1987 and kept it til 1995. Other than that my current gigging US 2015 Precision, which I`ve now had for 2 years isn`t going anywhere unless I need to sell it for the money, I`ve done too much that holds dear to me with that bass to now offload it, 1st Rebellion Festival, 1st overseas tour, played on our 2nd album which is the recording I`m most proud of of anything I`ve ever done.
11. I think it would depend on my needs, but if starting out and wanting a pedal for extra sounds I`d prob go chorus or flanger, whereas now it would be a preamp/DI pedal with drive on it (which is in fact my only pedal).
12. Well as an Ashdown ABM600 user like yourself Dave, I can def recommend the RM500. Amazing amount of sound from these little amps.
13.
I'm no expert but a 4ohm retro 210 from barefaced will get you a lot from 350w if I had the cash that's what I'd buy and u reckon that's what Alex will say. If I had a spare £500 that's what I'd buy.
Yep, sound very nice with the TH amps as well, do the Retros.
14. Losing one instrument in a 5 piece is a 20% reduction, you`re always going to notice that, especially in terms of depth of the sound. In cases like this either rethink the sound you have as a 4 piece, or replace the rhythm guitarist asap.
15.
There is an ABM 1000 in the for sale section..
That has to be a consideration if liking the Ashdown sound. I`m desperately trying to talk myself out of it, as I have no need of it.
16. Singer of the best ever Bond theme song as well. A real shock this, 52 is no age (said at the age of 51), sad, sad news.
17. Bought a case from Rhys, very swift on delivery seeing as arranged on a Sunday night, recommended.
18. Ross bought a cab from me. Being local he picked it up and we had a good chat about amps etc - seems we have the same bass/amp etc, must be a Hertfordshire thing
19. Mark bought a Squier Matt Freeman Precision from me. I wasn`t selling the bass with a case so we made an agreement for me to ship it to him in a case and for him to return the case. Good transaction all round, swift payment, good comms, advised of receipt.
20. Just bought some pickups from Rory. Good comms, swift despatch, great transaction.
21. If you`re happy with the tone you get, but are struggling at higher volumes then maybe it`s Ashdown ABM time - I`m assuming the cabs you`re using are also Ashdowns MAG range? The ABMs are a higher range, so can be pushed harder whilst retaining their core tone. It may also be a sympton of the MAG head, so maybe an ABM head - certainly the ABM600 is very versatile and can be made very sharp/grindy with a bit of tinkering on the 9-band equalisation.
22. It`s the modern sound. Really annoys me, our music is fast so at one gig, where the kick drum was awful on all the preceeding bands I asked if they could drop some lows and add in some highs to the kick drum. I was looked at as if I`d asked them to eat a dog-log.
23.
I had the Fender Rumble 15 and it sounded great at home, at low volumes. I also used it for quiet band rehearsals. A nice little amp. Frank.
Good recommendation, and shameless plug here, I`m selling one for £50 del in UK. Which is nice. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/299395-fender-rumble-15-v2-l50-inc-delivery-in-uk/page__p__3268657__hl__rumble__fromsearch__1#entry3268657
24.
That's not my experience at all. The majority of my gigs are small venues (under 250) but I'm struggling to recall the last time my bass wasn't DI'd into the PA. On several of the more recent gigs, I've been asked to turn down my amp to such a degree in order to get a balanced and controllable sound FoH that the bass in the the foldback has been louder than what has been coming out of my cabs. It has got to the point where AFAIAC my rig is mostly there for show at gigs and is only really used at band rehearsals. I'd love to be able to go in-ears but I don't see it as an option for small bands that rely on the venue's PA system.
That "amp quieter than the foldback" thing has happened to me a couple of times. I`m not that fussed by it, only when I`m asked to turn down so low I can`t hear the amp or the foldback. Likewise I can`t remember the last time I played without going into FOH, irrespective of size of the venue.
