  1. I saw U2 way back in the early 80s before their massiveness happened, used to quite like them back then, up until Pride really, didn’t like The Joshua Tree stuff at all when it came out but do like it now (note to self, buy it). Since then they’ve done some great songs but what I’ve learned is that in general I might like said great song but have been disappointed with the album it’s on.
  2. Not everyone likes everything, with usually it being older people not liking newer forms of music, something that benefited Keef well in his early career with the Stones being the young tearaway rebels. I`m similar to him, I can`t stand hip hop or rap, pretty much anything falling under that umbrella aside from Walk This Way by Aerosmith/Run DMC which is just superb imo. But in my defence this isn`t a new thing, I`ve disliked it all the way through.
  3. Under-rated Marshall bass amps in general. Probably as they`re better known as a guitar amp company, but their bass amps - especially the DBS - were great.
  4. Agree, I used MB gear for a while and what influenced me on this was hearing bassists use it in live settings, every time I heard a bassist whose tone I liked invariably it was a Fender bass into a Markbass amp.
  5. I’ve always tended to go for an amp that I think will have far too much power for my needs, then matched it with cabs that - on paper - have at least an equal but preferably a higher power handling. I figure this way I’m less likely to blow anything up, and unlikely to be in a position where I haven’t enough volume.
  6. For Precision pickups I aim for the below as a guide, then adjust for the individual bass: E - 2mm, A - 6mm, D - 7mm, G - 5mm I`d look at similar "slant" settings on the Jazz pickup.
  7. I wish I were still able to cart about gear like this as when I used one of these it was amazingly good.
  8. That’s a big selling point for me, being able to add the gain/drive without added volume.
  9. Probably like many, the first version I heard of I will Always Love You was Whitney Houstons. I think it`s an incredible version though I do now prefer Dolly Partons version as it has a vulnerability to it.
  10. You just have to love the levels of support shown on Basschat, with Rob clearly willing to go above & beyond to help out where needed 😂
  11. The JMJ is quite a dark vintage sounding pickup so might work nicely, added advantage is not having to be worried about getting a knock on a pristine bass. The neck feels like a decent Precision size. I’ve no experience of the others but have been so knocked out by the JMJs that I’ll recommend them for ever!
  12. Black Stone Cherry at Islington Assembly Hall on Friday. It was the release day of their latest CD so beforehand there was a signing event (I didn’t do this). They’d decided they wanted to play smaller venues like when they started coming over here and in my opinion their sound suits these much more than the Wembley Arena size venues. They played just over an hour and a half, only downside for me was they didn’t play Things My Father Said which is one of my faves.
  13. I’ve just got in from a Black Stone Cherry gig. The guitarists used various guitars, Gretsch, PRS, Fender, Gibson, the bassist used Stingrays and various different types of Fenders. The band sounded pretty much the same throughout. So if a band sounds the same with different brands of instruments then yes, very unlikely that different bridges or pickups would be noticeable at that volume.
  14. Rotosound steel rounds for years, loved the sound of them when worn in. Warwick Red Label steel rounds, in my last band I needed the fresh new string sound and these kept that much better than the Rotos. Elixir steel rounds, play and feel great, out of the pack sound like steel rounds that have been played for a week or two and retain this for about a year.
  15. Decent amps, and a good price
  16. I’ve just picked up one of these - thanks @fretmeister - used it this evening at band practice and agree it really helps tame the low end. I’ve had a good few compressors but this one just seems to work for me, with hardly any compression on, just at 9 o’clock. From reading reviews this seems how most people tend to use it.
  17. In my opinion the extra outlay for the EVO IV 600 is well worth it, it has the same feel to the sound that you mention but due to the extra eq is more versatile and feels “sharper”, more precise.
  18. I`m primarily a pick player, occasionally at home play finger-style, when I do it`s the middle finger that does the most, if I can get away with just using one finger middle it will be as I find I have a steadier attack with that one, whereas I have a tendency to pluck too hard with the index finger. But overall it`s just for enjoyment, I`m very unlikely to ever play finger-style in a band.
  19. From the amps mentioned I`ve had the Markbass CMD121P and for such a little amp it had plenty of power, I used it in a band with drums, 2 basses, 3 gtrs, keyboards & 2 lead vox, it never lacked in regular pub-sized venues. Having heard the Fender Rumble 500 combo in use it`s an amp I`d also check out, very nice full rich sound.
  20. Only with one girl at work, she is a great singer though as she’s now married & got a daughter she no longer does anything music wise other than listen to Busted (and buy everything they put out). But she’s the only person I chat to who has some form of understanding.
  21. I was chatting to our producer last week about his machine gun guitar, which I remember from his appearance with Morrisey on The Jonathan Ross Show. I looked up the clips on Youtube and it had a great sound, how does the bass version compare?
  22. I love my M80s but I’ve never worn them on my back, I just use them as a regular case, just one which is slightly smaller & lighter so more convenient.
  23. Fingers crossed they’ll be more reliable than the PFs, agree that the sounds are a bit un-inspiring but then I’ve often found that the Ampeg tone in isolation is just that, but once in the mix they just seem to work so well.
  24. I’m not sure about snobbery but from my experiences in gigging primarily punk & Oi (originals) I’ve seen far more violence in “regular cover venues” than on those scenes.
