Covers bands - are they just parasites? (& how PRS works)
Lozz196 replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
When I’ve played in Europe every venue asked for a set list for these reasons. Same, in UK, never been asked for any set list details. -
P bass, Ampeg Pro 4 and an Aguilar GS410. OMG

Great set up Jim -
My thoughts too, am very tempted by one of these.

I think we’ll wait til we get the mixed/mastered copy through then decide on which track to put a video to, put that out to generate a bit of interest then look to release the album. We also included in the 12 tracks a song intended as a single so that may also come out before the album release.

So just got back from recording our 2nd album (I wasn’t on the 1st). I’ve no tracks to put up hence putting here rather than in the other section. We were fortunate enough to do the recording in Portugal at Boz Boorers (of Polecats/Morrisey fame to name a couple of the many things he’s done). We didn’t take any instruments, just used what he had at the studio - for me a rather nice 1969 Fender Precision which played & sounded great. We set off Monday morning, got there early afternoon after Boz had picked us up and driven us to the studio which is at his place way up in the mountains. We set up the equipment and did one test track Monday evening to get the feel of the place. Work then commenced Tuesday at 11am and went through to 2:30am on Weds to break the back of the tracks, getting bass/drums/1 rhythm guitar down for all 12 songs. From there we completed the 12 songs by midday Friday, then headed to the airport for or flight home. Which was cancelled! So it was rescheduled for today and have just got home, exhausted but buzzing after such a great week. I can’t wait to hear the fully mixed & mastered album.

I’ve been in many covers bands, to me they’re part of the entertainment business, if people didn’t want them they’d soon dry out. -
This looks very nice, quick question, when the Drive is selected is there an increase in volume or does it remain constant?

Is 4 strings really enough? (Oooo i went there)
Lozz196 replied to BigJHW's topic in General Discussion
I’ve just recorded a 12 song album this week. I used the D string for one note, didn’t use the G string. Which of course says more about my style of playing than number of strings needed. But for me it all comes back to the tools for the job thing. I’d have no problem using a 5 string bass if it were the best instrument for me (including the required ergonomics given my glass back) even if I didn’t use either the low B or the G. -
Harley Benton get a good write up, I’d also put forward Squier Affinity, once set up properly they play very nicely.

Similar to @FatDrunkStupid as I have the exact sound I want - Fender JMJ Mustang into Sansamp Bass Driver v2 - I can’t think of any other gear, other than a blue JMJ. I think they look great but as I have 3 black ones I don’t need any more basses.

Furthering on this am jetting off to Portugal on Monday to record our (The Spacewasters) 2nd album. No instruments needed as the studio has them all (I’ll find out what I’m using when I get there), accommodation at the studio. Now we’re not professional, no chance of being so and under no illusions that this makes us so, but what a great hobby to have where we have the opportunity to do something like this. -
To put things in perspective in 1985 £599 could buy approx 1000 pints of lager so that was a significant outlay for an amp back then.

In my old band it was all the band leader, on there pretty much every day chatting with other bands, posting re future gigs, new merch, talking with fans, new tracks/videos etc. He said it was invaluable in getting the band work. With my current band again it’s band leader but much less content, a much more relaxed input.

Aside from Basschat I don’t do social media. I’ve looked at both my current and previous band’s Facebook pages just to see what goes in but other than that not interested.

I don`t really care if people are using their phones or not, held aloft or not. I don`t understand it mind, I prefer to concentrate on listening mainly but also watching the performance. Maybe I`m just too old to multi-task.

Yep, whilst I was in my last band pretty much every weekend we were up & down the country, staying over in hotels, getting planes or ferries to other countries, was great. On the way to the gigs we used to discuss our day jobs and always end with “and that’s all they’ve got, where we’ve got this”, looking forward to the gig(s) we were on way to. Sadly the workload just got too much for me in the end but I loved all of it, where I’d like to have had more time doing it I got 6 great years. -

Back in my Knock Off days we had a few people make their own tees, and if I recall correctly we were contacted by a band about them recording one of our songs. I never heard it but I really hope they didn`t do a better job than us. -
Contact Ashdown directly re this, they should be able to advise what is suitable. I did pretty much the same with a pair of RM210s that I had, they put in some type of Eminence cones for me, made the speakers sound a lot better.

Rockpile were one of the first bands I saw live, was about 79 when Dave Edmunds was in the charts with Girls Talk.

Another thought here, has anyone had people making bootlegs of your merch - t-shirts etc? -

Strangest time I was recognised was at Hamburg Airport, by The Macc Lads of all people - we were playing the same venue that evening. -
I`ll have to make the effort to come and see you goth chaps, @Clarky & @BigRedX, you`re doing some pretty decent gigs/venues.

Things like: Where was it I saw you last, followed by, is that where you come from or are you local to this venue Elaborate about the headlining band that eve You doing Rebellion this year I`d usually get something from that that made it look like I had some form of clue about who I was chatting to. I find once I know someones name I can link them to things, Gary from Luton, Pam & Darren of Manchester etc. -

That happened to me a lot in Knock Off as I’ve a dreadful memory for faces. First few time’s was embarrassing, I then developed certain questions to bluff my way out of it. No, who the feck are you wasn’t one of them 🤣
