I think fretted would enable a tighter rhythm and really help lock in with the drums, make a real groove happen.

I tend to cut the low mids, preferably around 400 or 500Hz, this takes away the boom, then boost highs, if possible at 4 or 5kHz to get some definition - I find boosting far more than is pleasant in isolation works well. If I’m looking for clank and to cut through I’ll also boost at 2.5 to 3kHz.

Wise words Dave, I’m sure we’ve all had gigs where the turnout has been poor for whatever reason, it’s easy to focus on those but always best to try and remember the good packed out ones and just acknowledge the low turnout as a blip.

Since my previous post I’ve come to the realisation that I needed smaller lighter instruments so have bought a couple of Fender JMJ Mustang Basses and I get a great deal of enjoyment playing these. The first one I bought I feel incredibly attached to already as I feel it’s given me a new lease of life in playing, realistically I probably would have had to stop playing in bands without making this move.

Def not, that`s why I do everything via e-mail if possible, so much easier to go back & check the written word rather than trying to access my dismal memory

This is a shocker to say the least, great bassist, RIP

If I Could Change Two Things About My Band
Lozz196 replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
I would choose: That the bassist looked much slimmer and more handsome. That we got paid ridiculously huge amounts of money for our gigs. But back in the real world I don’t think I’d change anything about my gigging band, what we’re doing suits me exactly. -
I used the Boss WL20 in Europe, no issues.

Thinking about this, given that I`m trying to offload a full Ashdown ABM rig I should be hating on everyone going ampless 🤣

Given how the Daniel Craig films started with the rocking Chris Cornell song I found it strange how they went to the insipid Adele/Smith/Eilish tunes.

Calling Carl Douglas…… -
I think you need to introduce him to a claw-hammer Tim

Although I love the Shirley Bassey songs Chris Cornells You Know My Name will forever be my fave.

That’s a strange one, I wonder what the thoughts/reasons behind that were

That’s what one of my fave bands, Booze & Glory were doing last time I chatted with them, still had full backline. They said it really helped rather than the hope/expectations of relying on monitors.

I recall an experience in an old band I was in. The guitarist wrote a song and I added in my bassline for the intro which was 8ths on the root note. At the time he asked can you do this/that etc, so I tried but decided to stick to my guns on what I’d originally come up with. Said guitarist then decided to record the song (without the band, just him, for our website - this was him all over, sadly). Grudgingly (very grudgingly) he admitted to me that after trying many things out on the bass he realised that my 8ths on the root intro were what was right for the song. It was a rock song with a killer guitar riff for the intro, what he’d originally wanted was something like Flea bouncing up & down all over the place, whereas as he found all that did was get in the way of his killer guitar riff.

Not so sure about playing but I’ve certainly got better at understanding what the bass should be doing in a song, and can usually bring up about 3 different bass lines/ways of playing the song, try them and hear which is right. This maybe due to having been in originals bands since late 40s and taken a more active role in songwriting since 50ish.

Doesn’t matter imo, there are no rules that beginners have to have cheap equipment and only experienced players can have the expensive stuff.

I had a group of mates like that in the 80s, most of them came from fairly privileged backgrounds, didn’t want to work so were perpetual students, all thought that the world owed them. I often thought it would be funny to see how they would have got on in their beloved USSR.

Yup, plug in play, lose myself in the moment, whatever was getting to me goes whilst playing, sure it’s still there but def diluted after an hour or so.
-
Def my preferred choice, however sadly no longer an option. Bah

I’d rather see a band play the song as it was recorded. Fair play adding in flourishes, runs etc, that does make for more interesting but I’ve seen some bands where the guitarist played a solo far more intricate than what was recorded, however this detracted from the song as the solo was a major feature of it. To me that is like singing different words in a different melody. I think we’re quite fortunate, as are drummers that we can add a few bits here & there without it being noticeably changed.
