I`ve tried with flats over the years on my Precisions and just never really "got" them, however my new JMJ Mustang has Chromes on it and I`m quite enjoying them. I`m fairly sure I will still swap over to rounds though.

They look good. I’ve a shed load of gear to move on and knowing there’s a reliable courier that specialises in instruments is very helpful.

Thanks Clarky, it came with Chromes on it which I’m quite enjoying but I know I’m gonna have to scratch the roundwound itch at some point.

Just tried my JMJ Mustang in my Mono Dual Guitar M80, fitted fine.

I’ve just bought a JMJ Mustang, and same here, bought because it fits my needs and it’s a great instrument. Although I know of some of the bands/artists he’s worked with I’m not familiar with their material so his name/ the bass being an sig model had no bearing on my purchase.

Tinker, tinker, and tinker again with the heights until satisfied. When I take a new bass to rehearsals I also take a screwdriver and adjust inbetween songs. On my Precisions I have the bridge saddles to match the radius of the neck, my pickup heights from the scratchplate are approximately: E - 1.5mm A - 6mm D - 8mm G - 5mm This I’ve found is a good starting point for my playing style and I tweak from there.

Yep, compression at home when learning new material is great for me but in a band mix I prefer without. Nice thought out selection of pedals though, do like the TC Spark for natural sounding warmth & a tad of drive.

It’s around the 8lb mark which was a bit disappointing given I’ve read of some slightly less than 7lbs, but it just overall feels lighter.

Great, thanks for the tip, nice to know that 34” scale will fit as my fave Elixirs only come in standard scale (which given the growing popularity of short scale basses seems remarkably short sighted imo). Be great to get it sounding more Precisiony.

Could be a couple of things, some bands acknowledge that if they don’t rehearse regularly they’re not as tight as they could be, whereas to some it makes no difference. Other bands like to rehearse regularly as it’s part of their social lives. I used to want to rehearse regularly but nowadays I’m happy with just for new material or if there’s been a gap between gigs, I don’t think I’d want to be in a weekly rehearsing band anymore. It’s worth holding out for what’s important to you unless there’s no chance of that happening.

Relic, it’s the Road Worn JMJ Sig Mustang. I’m not that fussed re fake relicing either way but this has been done quite nicely. I just needed a smaller/lighter bass but also wanted Precision width neck and many of the Mustangs have Jazz width.

Count me in on short scale appreciation, a rather nice Fender JMJ Mustang now chez Lozz.

So due to my back getting worse I decided that lighter short scale basses might be the way forwards so when I saw one of these available thought I’d go for it, having played one briefly before and rather liking it. I was wary of resenting it due to having to give up my beloved Precisions however I’ve just put in about an hour on it and I really like it. I’m even getting on with the D’Addario Chromes it’s wearing, they seem to really suit it (could never really get on with flats on my Precisions). It’s not that much lighter than my lightest Precision but it really feels like it is, maybe it’s the overall balance or maybe the playing position is just better for me. I think I’ve made a good decision here.

I tend to be pretty much the same so I`m confident I`ll end up sounding roughly the same as I always do.

Worth checking out the Player range, very nice basses.

Thanks for the encouraging words chaps, it really is appreciated. I’ve also got a Barefaced Big Baby II on the way, apparently it’s good for guitar as well so here’s hoping for a real one cab does all solution.

Def take the bass that makes you sound best.

This is why I won’t send instruments by couriers, I’d rather meet up with a couple of hours drive. Even if in hard cases who knows if they’ll ever manage to keep hold of it.

Good rehearsal yesterday evening with the psychobilly band The Spacewasters. We’re going to be on a shared EP so ran through the songs for that including learning a new (cover) one. Sounded great. Best of all it was 4-7 so was home in time for Married At First Sight Australia!

So with my back continuing to be an issue a certain amount of common sense has had to be applied. With guitar I was using my Tele Deluxe at 8.5lbs, have made the switch to Epiphone SGs at 7lbs. And yesterday I had a practice and my back was sore after playing my Precision (my lightest one at 8.2lbs) so I`ve ordered a Fender JMJ Mustang Bass (will of course do a NBD topic when it arrives). Having read up on them it seems they average around 7-ish lbs, but even due to the size it will be easier to play and easier to cart about in a guitar gig-bag (research done there too). In some ways I`m sad as it means I`m not using the instruments I prefer to play (aside from at home of course), but on the other hand I`m pleased that I`ve come to this acceptance. Onwards & upwards, and at least there are lighter options available nowadays. And this of course means I now have an absolute shed-load of gear to move on.

Same, there’s no way I’d be able to be in one of my bands without them. Other ear plugs I found deadened the top end too much making playing with them pretty rotten, whereas these to me just reduce the whole of the sound to a comfortable level.

As I’m a Fender man through & through I’ll add some form of A string retainer as this to me is a bit of a weak spot on Fenders. If it’s a bass I’ll be taking on planes I’ll get the nut changed for better tuning stability, might even swap tuners for Hipshots. Other than that I generally change the bridge for a grooved one to eliminate saddle slippage - not that I’ve ever encountered this but I’d rather prevent the chance beforehand. And lastly a Hipshot Extender to do drop D.

The only times I’ve had fret work done was when they needed levelling due to one or more being slightly proud, and it really improved the basses.

On guitar I have my pedals at front of stage. Currently on bass I have the luxury of no pedals, but should I use them either on top of the amp or at the foot of the speaker.

Yep as per @fretmeisters post Darkglass don’t just do metal tones. The bassist of The Cockney Rejects uses a DG amp and gets a very good but decidedly un-metal type tone, more classic rock sound really.
