Do BASS players play guitar better than guitar players play Bass?
Graham56 replied to Bass4real's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I don't need a guitarist for that, I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself... -
Stupidity (Dr Feelgood). Took another few years before I came anywhere the feel of John Sparks' original.

Les Paul? 😁

That old problem of missing notes when playing
Graham56 replied to FretsOnFire's topic in General Discussion
I watched my mate's band play a quiet cafe-style gig last night. Towards the end of the set they introduced a new song, Taylor Swift's Shake it Off. And they had a communal band-wide brain fart and couldn't get the riff going. They took three attempts then moved on to the next song. They handled it brilliantly though, with lots of humour and asking the audience if anyone knew how to play it. When they finished, people asked them to have another go. And this time they nailed it. Got the biggest cheer of the night too. -
Nick Cave at the O2 a week ago. I don't usually like huge venues like this - but... It was an intense, sad, joyful, wrenching show that completely drew the audience in, probably the best show I've seen in years. Did I say intense?

I can't find a Band, What am I doing Wrong?
Graham56 replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
I can't add much to what else has been said, apart from this. The vids don't sell you. Yes, your playing is solid and competent, fine and ideal for the music. But the visuals aren't. You don't need to jump around, but maybe you should stand and just look more engaged. Does this guy look like he could do the job and keep his energy levels up for, say, two 90min sets? Because that's what the band needs! I'm not sure your relaxed sitting position does that for you. Keep networking though, and keep trying! Cheers! Graham (66) -

Have you ever paid to play a gig?
Graham56 replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
If I did the maths - a few grand's worth of basses and amps, numerous rehearsal studios, many, many hours of practice, fuel, car wear and tear etc etc, than count that against the fees from the dog and duck etc... Yeah, overall I've paid to play. Idiot. -
How you deal with an over-enthusiastic guitarist...

Don't forget your skin. Perhaps you could skin a banjo...

...or at the very least, a much bigger sofa for the family photo.

OK, but what about their instruments?

Everyone who plays live needs to be aware of their guitarist Les Harvey and how he died...

Where do you stand in a five piece band
Graham56 replied to BassAdder60's topic in General Discussion
Yep, I'm a lefty and I prefer to stand at the drummer's right hand. It means I can turn a little towards the drummer but still avoid joining in on the cymbals with my head stock. -
Does any covers band do the original version of Proud Mary after Tina took possession of it?

If you interpret 'whacky' as a euphemism for 'cheesy crap', I can play. In one one band, when we ended with our cheesy Johnny B. Goode (yes, really. Sorry...) we'd slide it into the Batman TV theme, usually to the delight of drunken pub-goers. Seemed like a good idea at the time...

Hang on, how big were bass speakers in the olden days REALLY?

Wait till you see my mate with his 8 x driver cab... -
Sounds like spot-on classic bass playing to me!

Another argument for the short-scale fans...

The best Rolling Stones song...

But then you'd pop in to the pub on the way and spend lots more than any saving... 😁

Mott the Hoople's 70's song "One of the Boys": "I broke my head just to scare the teacher" Turns out it's actually "I grew my hair just to scare the teacher". Which is actually pretty pathetic.
