Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuce! at Hyde Park. By 'eck, the energy and commitment he puts in, for a full three hours, is quite something. Almost no gaps between songs, very little chat, just finish one song, then "One, two, three, four!" and on to the next one. Some superb bass and switching between fretted and fretless. The E-Street "wall of sound" did mean that it sometimes wasn't as clear as I like, but they are a superb band.

Choose now (doesn't matter which). Then practice solidly on that one so you are completely comfortable with it on the day.

I recently looked at my bass – I mean really looked. And it’s in a filthy state... So how do I get rid of serious accumulations of fretboard gunk? It’s an old P-Bass with flats and a rosewood board. And finger gunk has really built up on the frets and the board. What’s the best way of getting rid? Just a damp rag? A little water and a soft toothbrush? When I change strings I usually apply some linseed oil, but while this preserves the wood, it doesn’t really clean it. Any thoughts? Cheers, Graham

Are you doing this for fun or for money? And if it's for fun, is the singer's behaviour taking the fun out of it?

To avoid losing stuff or leaving it behind: 1. Develop a system where individual gear items and cases are always packed in the same way into the vehicle(s). This way you'll notice if something is missing, both on the way out and on the way back. Have one person responsible for placing the gear into the vehicle while the others (not including the singer, obviously) bring the stuff out of the venue. 2. When leaving the venue, always have a (sensible and sober) band member walk slowly around the stage area checking to see if you've left anything behind (leads, monitors, drummers etc). 3. And the last check before you drive off - walk all the way around the packed vehicle, looking for anything left on the pavement, propped up against a wall or tree etc etc. Stuff is easy to miss in the rush to get away. At different times I've found one of our monitors and a guitar left outside.
