OK. In my town, which we don't play often, and they enjoyed themselves, but we did have the first incident in years where a guy who had been boogieing away quite happily 30 secs previously was suddenly being dragged off another punter, fists were flying, bouncers were involved and people were being forcibly ejected. All the while in true Blues Brothers fashion we carried on, though unfortunately no wire mesh, and the route to the bogs & smokers hell is straight through the band. New rig did its stuff again, though I did get some grief early on for being too loud - is that ever possible!?
Glad we only ever play there Sunday afternoons when they've all just come back from church... I know a wistful solo acoustic act who was due to play there for the first time on a Saturday night. He entered the pub at the front, saw the 'carnival atmosphere' and walked straight out the back to his car without stopping.

My first amp years ago was a Basic 60, and my current amp is a Databass combo. I've had 2x10tx and a 1x15BW, and a very cool 2 channel head from the late 70s with a 'proper' parametric (inc Q) that I can't name at this distance. (Maybe Centurion? Dunno...) All are heavy, utilitarian, cheap, workmanlike and utterly reliable, except for the Databass which blew a speaker coil (a common fault). Once I replaced the knackered 4ohm spkr with an 8ohm, to try and tame it a bit, all has been fine. Its insanely loud and unfeasibly heavy and I use an NE-1 for a bit better fine tuning. I have a love/hate relationship with it, but I know I'd regret selling it. I wouldn't try and get a crispy Macus top end from it, but if I wanted that I'd go elsewhere. A sack truck or castors has saved on hernia repairs, too... If Peavey was a dog, it would be a black labrador. If Peavey was a car, it would be a Ford. If Peavey was a cocktail, it would be a decent pint of bitter.
Really nice, loved it. Great playing and that lady singer has a rich smooth voice. Expose yourself some more, I'd listen to it. Oggy
Thanks, Og. I appreciate it and I'll feed back to the gal in question when I see her.

We heard the boom boom of the sub in the drummer's car coming before he swept round the corner into the carpark of the gig in a shower of gravel. I looked up to see the mute expression of horror on our mandolin player's face as he saw his prized, handbuilt instrument shatter to matchwood under Drumbo's front wheel while reaching in to the back of his car for his backline that, apparently, is never loud enough... Still, at least it was insured. But our drummer still can't talk about it fifteen years later.

A solo bass/vocal version of 'Summertime' I did a couple of years ago for a lady singer friend for her first solo album. Just listened to it for the first time since we put it down. My NT Thumb V direct, IIRC. Pleasantly surprised, if a bit 'verby at the start. Not exposed myself to fellow bassplayers/colleagues/comrades like this before (..!) One of the best live sounds I ever had in a small room was preamp>Bose L2 vertical array. Same sound everywhere in the room at more or less the same volume. Not necessarily 'loud' but evenly distributed over the whole room (sounds weird, I know...) Also, Ron Wickersham of Alembic built the Grateful Dead's 'Wall of Sound' PA in 1973/4 using vertical array principles: no backine, no monitoring, just even projection in a stadium. Unfortunately it proved really expensive to develop and transport, but if you're a nerdy Deadhead like me, the '74 live tapes are some of the best sounding audience recordings. +1s to all the positives about Fairport. Peggy is my biggest and longest serving bass influence, always takes the time to chat and offer a few down-to-earth nuggets of bassy wisdom. Bloody ace bloke, and I've never heard anyone say anything to the contrary. The first 'proper' band I ever saw was Fairport in the back room of the Half Moon, Putney. I remember being most impressed by the epic tray of alcoholic beverages Johnny Jones left on the stage just before showtime. (Somebody said they were the British Grateful Dead with real ale instead of LSD...) It was sweaty, hot and as good natured as you could ever hope to enjoy. Peggy and Simon invited me in to hang out and watch them sound check on my 16th birthday (n+x years ago), Peggy even got a stereo line off the desk so I could have a recording of my birthday gig, what a geezer! Swarb was most apologetic when he inadverently wee'd on my foot in Farnham Maltings almost as long ago, and I was as relieved as anyone else when Rick was finally persuaded to turn his bloody phaser off for 5 minutes. I've watched with nerdy interest as Peggy's gone through that lovely Precision, Riverheads, Musicmans(?men), Rob Armstrong customs and various Ibanez(ez), Ashdown, Randall and Trace. And a Boss chorus pedal. I couldn't bring myself to see them on this tour, though. They remain, without doubt, tight, musical and good fun but seem a little insipid compared to former times. I remember when they used to take the p*ss out of The Spinners (who they seemed to follow on tours of fading seaside theatres) mocking their PA with a tiny megaphone. It seems that they may be moving into that league now though... Mind you, I hope I'll be able to be tread the boards with that much confidence and dignity when I'm past 60...

Anyone have any idea where I might get a couple of port bungs for my SMX Trace combo? I fancy fiddling about to see if I can make it sound even sweeter. If you've used them, I'd appreciate your opinion...

Improvisation on Bass - Completely Pointless
bassninja replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Many of the bass players I enjoy improvise outside of a jazz setting (Phil Lesh, Mike Gordon, etc), and none of the bands I play in have rigid parts (if you'll pardon the expression...) I agree with the 'conversation' analogy. Its about emphasis, inference, tone, dynamics, reaction, tension and release. That's what makes it fun for me, anyway. I doesn't have to be about 'check out my flattened ninth' noodling or fretw*nking, if you have a good enough musical vocabulary. -
Pebbles On The Beach Festival, Littlehampton, 21st August
bassninja replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
All the best for another good 'un. Unfortunately gigging elsewhere Last year was triffic, WalMan and Silverfoxnik (among numerous others) doing a sterling job for decent causes and promoting live music too. Gigging around LA quite a bit in coming weeks, hope to catch up with you both again at some point... -
Great stuff. Good goods, industrial packaging, swift, efficient and a decent fella...
The two I've used have always been reliable, the Database was bloody loud, both gave a decent tone.
I'm still using a DataBass. Never needed to go above 3 on the master. They do seem to have a reputation for eating speakers, which is what happened to me so I replaced it with a 500w 8ohm job for headroom. No bother since. Downward firing ports, so sometimes need to place it carefully onstage. Hates hollow stages, as you might imagine. Insanely loud, not really very flexible EQ, weighs a ton. I don't need crisp Marcus top end anyway, but this definately couldn't provide it. Owes me nothing though. I use mine flat, with a sansamp clone as front end. For all its annoying foibles, I can't seem to make myself get shot of it. The annoying relative of the bass amp world...
