you'll have tried just turning the output level down, I guess..? there are also issues with the output impedance - an active bass will probably have a lower (I think) output impedance so it will be 'seen' differently by whatever's next in the chain. Adjusting the impedance is one of the raison's d'etre of this thing (GLZ): http://www.bargeconcepts.com/glzbv.html What pedals are you having problems with? Would make it easier to suggest alternatives... EDIT: Try putting something that's 'not bothered' immediately after the bass and see if it can swing the impedance back the way you want. many pedals will have specs for output impedance which should help you work out what's going on...

VT Bass vs Bass Driver, Sansamp Classic, and Blonde
topo morto replied to topo morto's topic in Effects
Thanks, hope it was useful! I actually swooped on six Sansamps to compare for use on bass and occasional guitar: BDDi, PDDI, Original, GT2, Blonde, VT. Keeping the BDDI cos it's good at beefing up the sound of a shonky bass (OK, if I spent less on pedals I could afford a better bass, but hey...) - PDDI cos it's good on bass and Guitar, and original as my dad reckons it makes him sound like Santana -
Made a little video of the BDDI and the VT : Not sure if the video entirely does justice to either pedal - sounds ok when I listen through speakers, awful through headphones. Also one of the VT Bass and the original sansamp: there's another one of the VT and the blonde but that one turned out a bit quiet. I am still trying to work out how best to record for youtube! Hope someone might find them interesting...

It's very, very good but I'm just about happy enough with my Para Driver, no need to lug both around. Excellent guitar pedal, not really as good as the VT for bass but you could try it if you fanced something different (slightly unconvincing youtube comparison: http://www.youtube.com/user/StompBoxRevolu.../0/bVdmxA59qYs) Musicradar review here. £90ish posted recorded ono.~ Any questions, let me know!

Very happy with a swap deal, A wren 'n' cuff Phat Ph*k for my VT Bass. Good PM conversation while he was waiting for me to give the thing up too! All good.
Hi I cant find any simple passive Y pedals for connecting two guitars / basses to one amp and switching between, Im only looking to spend up to £20 - 30... I want something like the EHX switchblade, but in reverse... i mean why didnt they do that instead? would have sold a lot better... who uses two amps? (rhetorical question) Im looking to build a reverse switchblade anyway unless someone can find one in that price range...
The switch to switch one input to two outputs is the same as the one to switch between two inputs to a common output, isn't it? At the end of the day it's just connecting one socket to one of two other sockets... no components in there, just a switch. At least I have one that can be used both ways, unless I'm forgetting how it works... come to think of it, I don't use it... PM me if you want to buy it!

Kind enough to send me a bunch of bass mags for cost of postage To be honest I think I already know everything about bass playing, but it'll be good to just make sure, then I can feel more superior. Cheers!
when my guitarist goes into a solo
As the flipside to the suggestions from thisnameistaken / Doddy, does your guitarist just play single notes in his solo, or is it more of a chordy / riffy type style? If the former, you might be up against it a bit.... unless you throw a few chords into your bass part! Can't think of any great examples of breaks with just a bass player and a 'monophonic' guitar solo... always going to sound a bit sparse.
You could try an octaver
Yeah, a micro-pog might be cool too!
fiddling with the settings half way through a song isn't possible.
Not tempted by the progammable or deluxe versions? Or maybe a deluxe VT Bass? How do you use the BDDI in your chain? Requirements for a booster pedal are going to be different depending on if it should work pre/post, whether you go out from the BDDI at line or instument level, and also if you are using a lot of drive. You might have some joy with a pedal like the MXR M108. Running it before the BDDI will allow you to get different tones out of the BDDI distortion, while running it after will allow a general boost and eq tweak. Still, i'd be tempted to keep it simple and try one of the programmable sansamps.
from the pre amp
do you mean the pre-amp in your amp, or in a separate box?
MXR M80 has a Blend control too. Both the EQ and Distortion circuit are switchable, on the Sansamp it's just the Distortion AFAIK.
I think the BDDI is like this: Powered but 'off' - works as a clean preamp and DI. On, blend control to left : treble and bass controls work only On, blend contol to right : treble, bass, presence and drive all work. Pretty flexible. Still, what you can't do is have just the distortion without the EQ, though you could try to set it to flat. If I see an M80 going cheap I might have to grab it and try it out too!
I absolutely love my MXR, it's got a switchable distortion circuit, so for me it scores over the Tech 21.
Surely the blend on the Tech 21 is more flexible?
-
Both the boxes you mentioned are well-regarded by most, though the BDDI has its haters. other options: VT Bass Deluxe Sansamp Para Driver Aguilar Tone Hammer EBS Microbass Can vouch for the tone hammer being a great piece of kit. Sold mine as it was a bit heavy to keep in the back of a gig bag. The VT Bass probably has the most flexible distortion but only the deluxe model has the DI output. Great for live use with its presets though.

Just to confirm, you're fine with the para driver/sansamps...
Can I use headphones with my SansAmp? You can, but the output was designed to be low enough so as not to overload whatever you plug it into (mixer, combo amp). Therefore, it may not be the most satisfying level. We suggest you plug the SansAmp into a mixer or home stereo (auxiliary input) and then you can crank the cans as loud as you like.
But as you see, they say themselves that it's gonna be quiet, so headphone amp still useful!
