I prefer 4 strings because I can thrown in all sorts of techniques without having to think too much about the muting. With a 5 I have to play more conservatively to keep everything under control. If I wasn't rubbish that would help, but I think with any given level of talent the same thing applies. I often don't like B strings because when a string is that thick compared to its length it sometimes seems to act more like a gong or chime than a string, you can get all sorts of weird metallic overtones. The B string also needs a different technique with all that extra weight, needs a gentler touch. I don't like C strings because they don't have any notes on them that are bassy, and I picked up the bass 'cos I wanted to play [i]bass[/i]. Agree that it's nice for chords though.

I don't think a great jazz bass 'growl' comes from putting loads of distortion - I've got best results from blending the output from both pickups, with a nice high J, setting the action to introduce a little string clank at the start, picking aggressively between the pickups. That can already give quite a lot of interest to the note attacks - add a bit of actual distortion and you get a really savage sound.

I took at the price tag and think "I may be an idiot, but even I have limits". I'd like a store that was the music equivalent of TK Maxx. It's those kind of stores where I might make an impulse buy, and where it's actually worth the store's time to have me browsing around in there.

Yes, it is a pain not knowing whether you'll get the full amount or not for gift! A buyer who knows the ropes will know that "£100 paypal gift" means that you as the seller wants to see £100, so they should pay any fee - but to be totally unambiguous, you need to specify to the buyer that they pay any fees if they are paying by card. I think fees apply when the money backing the payment is coming from a credit card, or when it's marked as a payment for goods rather than a gift (and sometimes when it's cross-border payment.) Gift from paypal balance or bank balance shouldn't incur a fee. If the buyer intended to pay gift but didn't, it may be possible to reverse the payment and only lose a few pence (20p or something) and then re-do it as a gift. No help if the sellers payment is backed by credit card, but even in that case I think they can usually choose to pay the fees themselves. Sound about right? Or is your experience different? Either way sorry you've been short-changed, never a good feeling!
