Sounds about right yeah. Three bolt neck joints also came in around 1974, which suggests this could be a neck from early 1974 featuring the blocks and binding but not yet the three bolt neck joint. The age of the body is harder to gauge. The single thread bridge saddles like these came in in 1970 apparently (according to the book at least) but again they could just be a simple later swap. If the bridge, pots and neck plate are all from the original body then it could well be the 1969 it was described as being, but with the 1974 neck added. Looks like a cool bass either way. -

The book I’m looking at is The Fender Bass - An Illustrated History, by Hal Leonard. It’s a good resource for this sort of info. -

The pickup spacing looks like 1960s, not 1970s, so I’m leaning towards thinking it could well be an early 1970s neck attached to an earlier body. -

My two bobs worth as the owner of a 1970 P. I’m pretty sure there weren’t pearl blocks offered in 1969 - more like early 1970s. Im also pretty certain that the machine heads only started featuring a little circled ‘R’ next to the Fender stamp in 1973 (my 1970 has no ‘R‘ stamp.) The 1966 pot codes are common for many basses for a few years after 1966 (mine also has them). Apparently Fender had too many and so used them for a few more years, so can’t be tied to an exact date. The cut scratchplate could simply be a later replacement so not really significant. Overall tho it does look like an original old Jazz, but unlikely to be a 1969. I think they went to three bolt neck plates in about 1974 so I’d guess early 1970s - 73/74ish. Happy for anyone to add to these observations - they are just my opinions. EDIT - alternatively it could be the body and neck plate are from a 1969 but paired with a different, later neck from up to 1974. -
Not sure if I can be bothered to go back to gigging
bassbiscuits replied to BobVbass's topic in General Discussion
I’m really missing gigging. It’s my time away from the pressures of work and family life, meeting friends, getting creative and letting off steam, as well as keeping my voice and my playing in shape. Im 46 so I’ve hopefully got a few years left of playing. Even tho gigs can be a pain in the @r$e logistically I do find they are the best proving ground for new material (both original and general experimentation with covers). Without any on the horizon it’s hard to feel motivated tho. -
Bought a FS-5U from Frank which he cleaned and checked over before popping it in the post. It arrived within a day or two and was spot on. A good guy to deal with. Cheers buddy.

For how long have you been playing bass?
bassbiscuits replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Theory and Technique
I started playing bass at 12, mainly because my older brother decided to learn guitar and I wasn’t going to let him get one over on me. Everything came at the right time - we’d started listening to some proper music and taping the charts, some older family friends had made a band and it all seemed very exciting. I got a short scale Satellite bass and a five-watt practice amp, which i swapped for a Westone and a better amp a year later. Now been playing since 1986. Started on acoustic guitar a year or two later and now play that as much as my bass.- 14 replies

Absolutely this. If you don’t bond with it, it’s like not fancying someone - if it just ain’t happening, there’s not much you can do other than move on. You won’t regret being without something you don’t really seem to like that much anyway. Chalk it up to experience, sell it and move on.

OMFG where did you dredge that ghastly thing up from? That’s absolutely appalling. You gotta hope that Kurt had shuffled off this mortal coil without ever hearing that travesty.

Hanging basses or on stands which is best?
bassbiscuits replied to thestick's topic in General Discussion
I tend to stand mine up in their gig bags or cases. To protect them from two kids. I figure I’d only have to store the cases somewhere else where they’d be the way otherwise. -
Has Brian May only ever used one guitar?
bassbiscuits replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
He did use that mainly but had a few other (mostly) Strats too. -

When will you start gigging again?
bassbiscuits replied to julietgreen's topic in General Discussion
Ah yes we are in the forbidden city of Leicester. Made me realise that if more localised lockdowns are to be expected it will really affect gigging. If anywhere any member of the band is coming from, or the place we are playing, gets covered by a lockdown at relatively short notice (as with Leicester) that’ll be a massive problem. -
Good (bass) intentions you didn't get around to during lockdown

Homeschooling the kids. Had the best of intentions. Never happened tho. -
Instruments you'd buy, but wouldn't...
bassbiscuits replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
Totally. I‘ve had a Epi Jack Casady Bass, plus an Epi Gary Clarke Junior Casino and a PRS Se Bernie Marsden signature. Each was very discreetly a signature model with a small signature on there at most. -
I’m in Leicester and was very much trying to avoid playing on July 4. Well I’ve succeeded in that...

I never liked the particular tort on the MiJ Mustang. Very dark brown. My first choice of replacement (red tort) seemed to be hugely expensive, as did my second choice (pearl white) so I settled for the white which I actually prefer. Not too bling but different enough to look cool. Looks a bit 70s to me which is cool. Just need a thumb rest now to complete the look. -

Digging that double cut Gibson one. That’s unusual but very cool. Love the Mustang with the gold pickguard too - again not the obvious combination but it looks great. Is it a Pawnshop but with original-style pickups added? -
Yeah they were mint. Combined with too many tequila cocktails I had a grand old evening!

I went to Canada for a wedding a few years back and the wedding function band were just full on 1980s and were absolutely brilliant! Half the smarty dressed guests got changed into neon, legwarmers etc and everyone danced their a..es off. Was an excellent night. They were weirdly called Val Kilmer and the New Coke. (Nope me neither...). Quality tho.
