  1. One good bass for me. I’ve done it before for years at a time and it was fine.
  2. Ah that rings a bell actually. That’s a lot of quite challenging material to cover too! Good on him.
  3. Aha! Sorry that took me a moment. It’s not Elton and Billy Joel. It’s a chap called Joel, who does Elton John. We did have to make it a pretty short whistlestop tour of the greatest hits to squeeze it into 45 mins all the same. You’re right tho - I think there is a show that combines both EJ and BJ, in a manner of speaking.
  4. Just back from the Wannasee Festival in Hertfordshire, playing with tribute act Elton Joel. Frankly enormous crowd - cool view from the stage! The rain held off and we blasted thru a windy 45-min set wedged between Elvis and the Bon Jovi Experience. Back of the net 👌. Enjoyed that.
  5. Quite a boring choice for me I’m afraid - based on the ones I can take everywhere easily, which are affordable, sound great and haven’t once let me down in 15 years of gigging - it’s a Markbass LM3. I’m digging my big wide-version Ashdown ABM500 head - however it is much larger and heavier than the MB and so for purely practical reasons has only made it to one gig with me so far. In terms of amps I don’t have to move by myself, Ampeg SVT every time.
  6. I use IEMs for some gigs, particularly where there are a few of us singing specific backing vocals which I want to be able to hear as part of my own little mix. But I wouldn't dream of not taking my amp too - I like the feel of bass through my feet and my internal organs. That's why i play bass after all.
  7. A Markbass Std104hf standing on its end would do it…?
  8. I’ve got a run of various summer festivals with two bands over the next few weeks so I’ve been carrying this around. It’s my smallest Markbass rig (LM3 head, Traveller 1x12 and 2x10 cab) but easy to get on and off stage quickly and to carry across all sorts of terrain between car park and stage (and small enough to stash if there’s good back line provided.) Also taking my cheap and cheerful Yamaha BB604 basses along for the ride. Sounded perfectly decent on the weekend.
  9. I was more freaked out that 2009 was 15 years ago!
  10. I’d be tempted to either pay to get it done properly or leave it alone and look for a bass that better suits what I want.
  11. I once got an Epiphone Jack Casady bass dropped off at the gig by my keys player and I plugged it straight in and used it for the whole gig. No point hanging around is there.
  12. I don’t think 10-15 years ago vintage 70s basses were seen as undesirable. We are only talking 2009-2014 after all. Hardly ancient history.
  13. Now sold thanks Selling this set of D’Addario Chromes. They are medium scale (ie for a short scale Mustang bass strung through the body), gauge 45-100. Bought them for my Fender Mustang bass, and then sold the bass before I could put them on. Doh. I picked them up off this very forum earlier in May, and haven’t even unpacked them. Looking to get back what I paid - £25 inc UK postage. Any questions give us a shout. I’ve also got some brand new unopened D’addario nickel round wounds I got for the same Mustang. I’ll pop them up for sale shortly too. Cheers.
  14. Great British Tribute Festival at Newcastle Upon Tyne with the Elton John tribute. Proper trek from the midlands but a really good gig. Still currently on the road getting home, waiting for my McDonald’s coffee to arrive…
  15. So much going on in these pictures that I love. The bass! The pickups! The carpet!
  16. I agree. even as the owner of a lovely vintage P bass, I've been taking out a Yamaha costing a tenth of the price to most gigs recently, and find it plays and sounds every bit as good, and is more versatile than the old P. It's cool to have, but I wouldn't splash out thousands on another (not that I have the money anyway) when I've got cheaper instruments which sound so good.
  17. I play in an Elton John tribute band - naturally the focus visually is on Elton, with an array of outfits, the onstage banter, the glasses, the voice, the mannerisms etc. I wonder how many punters know who has been in Elton's band over the decades - I've tended to use a P bass (thinking of Dee Murray) but then his other two bassists - Bob Birch and Matt Bissonette - use five string Stingrays anyway. I wear something smart and suitable onstage but don't look anything like any of those bassists.
  18. For me it was Steve Harris at first, but soon also Tom Hamilton from Aerosmith and Duff from G’n’R. It was the 80s after all.
  19. I used to be in a band that did Radiohead High and Dry, and the eternally depressing Snow Patrol “Run” which was guaranteed to clear any dancefloor.
  20. Bryan Adams at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Friday night. The man’s a legend. He’s 64, voice still sounds every bit as good as he did in the 80s with so many brilliant songs to choose from and a tight band to perform them. Really good party vibe in the heavier songs, dropping down to just piano and acoustic guitar for gentler, quiet moments. Ive liked his stuff for years and really pleased that he comes across as a proper good egg in real life. Excellent work that man 👏
  21. SOLD I’m selling my 2013 Made in Japan Fender Mustang bass in cream/white. I believe it’s an alder body, maple neck, with a rosewood board and the bridge strung thru the body. I swapped the original brown tort scratch plate for a white one but both are included in the sale and are a straight swap. I understand these have a slightly narrower nut (40mm) than the Mexican-built Justin Meldal-Johnsen models (41.3mm) which some people might prefer. It weighs 3.6kg, and balances well - an absolute doddle for long gigs and/or stiff shoulders. Owned by me since 2017, it’s in really good condition, with a couple of very minor surface dings and surface scratches - none through the paintwork at all. The frets are in great condition. It was fully set up by Leicester luthier Howard Smith shortly after I bought it and hasn’t need tweaking since. It’s currently wearing a set of medium scale D’addario EXL160M nickel rounds, 50-105, which on the short 30” scale feel firm and growly while still allowing for string bends. It has medium/low action with room to go lower, a nice tight neck pocket and is overall a lively, resonant bass. I’ve found it a really good alternative to my usual P bass, but I don’t currently have a job so it’s a bit of a luxury now for me to keep them both. It comes with a clean and functional Original Gigbag company padded foam gigbag - it’s a nice snug fitting bag despite being fairly cheap and meant for full-size basses. I’m looking for now just £725 plus postage within the UK only. Not looking to ship overseas so please don’t ask. Any queries give us a shout. cheers
  22. Hot and sweaty gig with the Andy Wales Blues Band at the Flying Circus in Newark last night. Lovely summer evening. I travelled light and just took my Yamaha BB604 - usually the last thing I’d associate with a blues band (when there’s a choice of a precision for example…) but in that format it worked really nicely. Got plenty of grit and punch if you play it hard, but smooth and fat if you ease off the gas a bit. Anyway, nice gig and for the bonus of seeing the northern lights on the way home. Pulled over on some dark country roads to watch them.
  23. I’ve had weak distorted tone on dying batteries in my Yamaha BB604. Anecdotally they seem to have gone flat extra quick when I’ve knocked the Nathan East pre-amp switch on while they’re unplugged and in gig bag, which doesn’t actually make any sense. But otherwise yeah they tend to suddenly be dead rather than taking ages to fade away.
  24. I still have the Hohner acoustic guitar I got for Christmas 1988. It’s a wreck now but just about ok for campfire jamming. Basswise, the P bass I bought in 1994. So far we’ve spent 30 happy years together.
