sprocketflup replied to dyerseve's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
errrk. Its got 19 bids! -
My gig set up features two Squiers, a CV jazz which I simply cannot fault and an Affinity P/J which plays a whole lot better than its £90 price tag. the Affinity could be improved, I don't think the jazz could.
You should play some jazz gigs. I've played gigs where I've never heard the tune before. Chord chart, watch, listen and pray.
My keyboard player has been known to say to me during set up for a gig "Do you know such and such a tune?" "Nope, never heard it" "Right well its in E flat minor and I think you should play this line ** suggests incomprehensible combination of notes** " and then we play it live at the show. Bit scary, but keeps you feeling alive

Current band rehearse once in a blue moon as we are dotted around the country so getting everyone together is a mare. If we could get a Skype type thing going then I'm sure we would. Done plenty of different bands ranging from rehearsing weekly but never gigging to, just diving straight in, all manners have their plusses and minuses IMO. I don't have a great deal of time these days so I'm cool with the arrangement my band has got at the mo
I've always had three with me at any gig - one for slap, one with flatwounds for soul & Dub type stuff and a fretless. I tend to keep the ones I'm not playing out of sight just so no one thinks I look like a poseur.
Thats my set up too! With one extra in my case, an EUB. Get soooo many comments after the shows about it, I couldn't even think about leaving it off now. Fair play to the guys who do the whole show on one bass, and I used to, but these days I don't. But please, don't expect everybody to be the same. Its horses for courses 'innit.

I usually have four on stage, and was for a while competing with a guitarist who had six. (guitars obviously) I'm not anymore, but am a total drag queen so on stage they stay. Oddly, I broached the subject of maybe trimming one back to the band the other week and was told "no!". I have them well trained

Id say that's a step or two backwards from the Portamento IMO
Why not make a register of your gear, buy some specific 'visual inspection only' stickers and actually learn how to do the formal visual inspection yourself? That way you've not said something's been checked in a way that it hasn't and your gear's probably had a better going-over than a lot out there. That said, I'm trained to be 'competent' to fully PAT computer equipment in public use as part of my job, and when I tested my own moulded-plug mains leads with a calibrated tester I was amazed at how many either failed or were close to failing despite looking absolutely fine, so I'd advocate replacing those every so often irrespective.
I've had the opposite experience, must have completed a few thousand PA tests in my time and only ever failed one item, a kettle. The lead was fine.

Is that a GMR on the left of the second pic?

For sale is my Ibanez EDA 905. I bought this a year or so ago, as I love the shape. Its just so darned comfy (even though it may not look it). However, despite my best efforts, as I mostly play 4 strings, I'm struggling with the extra board width and the extra string, and this is just not getting used. These don't come along too often, in fact I waited over a year before I was able to lay my hands on one. The 4 strings seem to come along even less often, but I live in hope. (If there's anyone out there with a 4 string version for sale, please let me know) Anyway some details. The body is made from Luthite, which sounds like it could play a part in a major blockbuster as some super-heroes Achilles heel. The neck is hewn from much more well known maple, topped with a rosewood fingerboard. Some specs shamelessly lifted from elsewhere - Body Material: Luthite

Bridge: Mono-Rail II with Fishman Piezo
Hardware Colour: Charcoal
Neck Pickup: Ibanez Dynamix Full Range passive pickup
Active EQ: EQA-PZ
Neck Material: 3-Piece Maple
Neck Type: EDA5
Number of Frets: 24
Fret Type: Medium
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Inlay: Pearl Dot
So this has extra Peizo pickups up in the bridge, each with its own control at the back of the bass for balancing up. There's also a pair of overall controls on the back for the overall mix, as an extra to the controls at the front. Condition wise not to bad, there's a ding at the top of the headstock which is shown in the pics, a scuff on the top horn, a similar blemish on the bottom horn. The back of the neck has a couple of small chips in the lacquer which I could not seem to photograph. Other than that, not too bad at all. Price = £200. I would prefer collection if possible of course, (Axminster) I'm happy to deliver fairly locally or bring it along to a gig to hand over if my band is coming near you anytime soon (here's my bands dates here - http://www.cloudbust....com/dates.html) Postage is not entirely out of the question either. Here's a review from some American fella that explains the set up lots better than I did - https://www.youtube....h?v=46LdJKrmYwU

Wel, as you can see its a 3 piece body underneath that ( pretty thick) lacquer. The woods themselves look ok tho? Only one way to find out I guess **edit** sheesh! whats happened to Photobucket? That was painful uploading these two pics

You know what, I'm not sure tbh. I bought one (amber) as I also was after a natural precision to match my natural jazz, but since moving the jazz on I haven't got round to doing what I was going to, which was strip the finish back. As a sort of 'see through' colour you know the body is going to be reasonable wood. Its in a case at me Mums at the minute, Ill take a few pics for you when I next go there if you like, and you can see for yourself if its do-able. They come up for sale on here from time to time
-
I know its not quite natural, does the 'amber' finish tickle your tastebuds?
