1. Hi, got a new laptop after all the smoke escaped from my old one, as to be expected it runs Windoze 10 and its new browser, Edge. Finding it difficult at times to do anything on here with it, are the site admins aware of issues yet? Typical problems - write a reply and click post, a bar come up telling me somethings happening and after a while stops, yet nothing has happened. Post still visible in reply box but hasn't been posted. This can happen a few times and the n the site freezes. Click refresh and the site goes to what I can only describe as text only, formatting gone haywire. Close browser and try again and all is normal....for a while
2. From a bit earlier in his career, Suffragette City is a cracking bassline to play IMO
3. Well of course theres always the "presents to wrap" excuse. failing that, try the Monty Python "Having a rather heavy period" excuse
4. My main squeeze is a Squier Standard series PJ, has a nice thin jazzy neck
5. I seem unable to read the word 'Guiter' in my head in anything other than a Hillbilly drawl. Anyone else have this problem?
6. Another band in the same boat here, must be something in the water. We'll be putting ads on milk cartons soon, so if anyone knows a decent sticksman in the SW shout up
7. This is no good. Links! we need links for gods sake! Wont somebody think of the children
8. Tony Butler is an incredible bassist IMO. Our sound guy knows him quite well, and is a thoroughly decent chap to boot I'm told
9. Depends on what the overall sound is you are looking for. I played in a very heavy one guitar band and would try and fill out the 'rhythm guitar' role as well during the leads solos as it felt empty otherwise, yet other one guitar bands ive played in had a lighter feel so I was able to just be a bassist IYKWIM
10. I'm also a fan of the Antigua finish, it does seem to vary a bit though between basses, some have more of a green hue than others, Ive noticed. This one is rather nice, but sadly for me I haven't the funds for it at the mo. Have a bump on me tho
11. "Well, twist my nipple nuts and send me to Alaska." I've restrung it (dropped all the saddles back to zero height and started again with the set up) and set it up again. It now sports a nice sensible amount of relief and a new set of Status flats and is already 100% easier to play . Im astounded first of all that I hadn't noticed the neck bend situation, and secondly by how much of a difference just the little tweaks Ive done so far at your suggestion has made. Old dogs, new tricks and all that. I haven't even touched the nut yet. But I can see that further improvements could be made there, so may still attack that at some point. For now, I'm enjoying playing this thing again and for that I thank you all
12. I probably could Kev.....lol New Status strings arrived and last night I picked up the bass to go about re-stringing. Had a quick peek along the length of the board and discovered that its got a lot more relief than i thought, how i never spotted that i dont know. Anyway, heres a thing - after Id released the tension of the strings, the neck went from excessive forward bow, right through straight and out the other side to a small degree of back bend. Ive never been shy about adjusting truss rods but Ive never seen one do that before, do you think maybe theres an issue with the neck? I gave the truss rod a tweak last night, shall revisit the bass later and see whats occuring
13. Inspired by own thread (ever the narcissist, I even think that songs about me) lets hear your entry for the longest lasting gig shirt competition. My own effort is a long sleeve sweatshirt from the NOFX Soul Doubt tour, purchased fresh from their gig at the Princess Charlotte, Leicester one sweaty evening in 1992. Still hangs in my wardrobe though doesn't get worn so much these days if I'm honest. So that's 23 years. Anyone beat that? A prize of the dust that my least hardiest gig t-shirt became to the winner. Ill get a pic up when i get back
14. About to set off on the road for our last gig of the year ( well planned one anyways) We would really like to hit next year with a more professional approach and set up, and so over the winter break I want to sort out some merchandise. Ive bought loads of band t-shirts at gigs over the years, Ive been really disappointed with some of it, whereas its gone once through the wash and came out no bigger than a beer mat, whereas other stuff Ive worn to death and had years of use out of it. Oddly enough, the one thats lasted best is a NOFX sweatshirt from thier 1992 'Soul Doubt' tour, still going strong, if a little tattered. Punks not dead. Anyone got any links where we can source some decent quality gear? we are thinking the usual t-shirts, beanie hats, key rings, mugs etc TIA dave sprocketflup
15. Haha I wont be doing any vids Im afraid, I can barely take a photograph! Got home form work today to find my new strings....havent arrived yet c'mon, c'mon, **drums fingers**
16. lol i didnt have one either so i made one by attacking an old five string with a shovel. Got me the gig and then held up for another 18months before I replaced it, its still in my loft Well im glad you decided not to, its been a thoroughly enjoyable pursuit for me, who knew there was life after the fourth fret?
17. A big thanks to everyone for their input on this, I have some new strings on order and shall mess around with set up before getting drastic with tools. I'll report back soon
18.
As someone who was nearly in your shoes at one point, I would also recommend the TI JF344 Jazz Flats. But get the nut done as well. It will make the bass nicer to play, whatever strings it has. And I'd really recommend, being ancient, learning to play with a low setup and a light touch, letting the amp do the work.
Hi Telebass, you say nearly in my shoes, do you mean regarding hand cramps or did you play bass for Cloudbusting?
19. A perfunctory glance at the 3 basses sat on their rack yields that yes, the nut on the offending bass does appear a tad higher than the other two. I'll get the calipers out at some point and measure before I get busy with a chisel. I say chisel as what I'm thinking of doing is popping the nut off and sanding a little away from the underside as opposed to filing string slots. To answer some of the other questions from above - I have a high action on most basses as Im a fairly clumsy player, the jazz has a higher action than the offending P tho as I slap that in a few places. The fretless's action is comparitively low as that's used for more delicate stuff and Im less wont to 'dig in' on it. Chris B - same angle yes, tho I do move them around as required, and the pain is spread across the palm end of the fingers and the centre of the hand as opposed to wrist area, fingertips usually fine. Im finding myself stretching the fingers back between numbers during the set now, which doesn't look to professional in my eyes. Im not getting any younger either so thats also a consideration (44 and been playing guitars of varying size for almost 30 years) re particular songs - yes, we do a rendition of Kate Bushes Sensual World which is all played on the lowest F and its octave and a few notes in between, Ive come to dread it. Ive taken to playing some of the Low F's with my thumb to give a bit of relief to my poor fingers. Its looking like the song is not going to appear on next years set list which I cant say Im sorry about. 'King of The Mountain' gives me grief too - another song featuring the lowest (4 string) F octave primarily. Anyways, all advice gratefully received, and Bluejays wisdom of trying some diff strings prior to wood butchery shall be heeded. The Greek - these Status flats you refer to, can i get them online?
