NBD: 1971 Precision... from Bermuda to Tyneside
sprocketflup replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm not a P bass man by any means, even less so with sunburst, but that's awesome. Just the whole package, back story etc, the stuff that you can't buy (well, you know what I mean ;)) fair play to you '71 is my YOB, and I don't seem to see many of them turn up. I know YOB basses are a rarity in themselves, but '71 does seem to be a sparse year even by those standards. As for the bridge move......I cant think of a reason either, other than he liked to play high notes/solos and bend them a lot so was falling off the edge of the fretboard? But surely you'd bend them inwards/upwards rather than outwards/downwards? No idea Anyway, enjoy that rather cracking opportunity you've been given there WOT, as already said, fair play to ya -
Every damn word.

Been in your position, its difficult but rewarding. I found myself getting frustrated and was told by a violin player I know "Don't be daft, that stuff takes lifetimes to master!" which made me feel a bit better about it. Enjoy! p.s. I've ended up trying half a dozen or so diff rosins to find one that I like

Any updates? Hoping all is well

Did someone really pay £600 for a Squier Affinity?
sprocketflup replied to prowla's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Makes it look like its a good price, i.e. Fear Of Missing Out, and 'shill bidding' - the first bidder may have bid £800 or so -

So that one bid was his mate/him on another account then. -
Pretty much play flats on everything these days, certainly everything that other people hear anyway. As with all strings, the tone/sound/depth varies quite a lot between the different makes & models. A set of Labellas will sound different to Fender flats. You may have to experiment a bit to find what you want. The other bonus of flats IMO is that they don't have that rather quick drop in clarity that I seem to find with rounds when they have been played a bit. In fact, the set I have on my main stage bass is well over 3 years old now, I'd have changed round wound strings lord knows how many times by now

So, I've picked up an old, little used bass to find the pots have gone all crackly whenever their respective knobs are turned. I've whipped the control cover off and drowned everything in contact cleaner, but to no avail. What other fixes are there for crackling? Other than roast spuds and apple sauce **should add, its the volume and two separate tone knobs that offend. The pickup selector knob is unaffected**

Unless I've missed it, I don't think anyone has an OLP stingray on their list. Or are they classed as something else?

Cant be - the nut slots on the E and A strings aren't low enough

Went to see the Skimmity Hitchers last night, hadn't twigged who'd be on bass duties, of course its @TheRev's band innit. Cracking night, cider and jokes flowing nicely, and grooving tunes a-plenty. Really enjoyed it, and as a little bonus, even my home town had the p%ss took out of it, along with just about everywhere/everyone else Excellent sweaty fun, get along and see them if you can

SOLD Here we have an example of the bewilderingly named range of Stingray basses, I believe the correct title for this bass is a 'Sterling by Music Man Stingray Sub 4' in a rather lovely trans blue. Bass is in very good condition, only mark is near the bridge where ham fisted string changes have taken a small divot of the finish off. I've tried to capture it but it's hard to photograph. Specially as I'm the ham fisted one. Active circuit, these things pump as I'm sure you know. Collection from near Axminster, or I'm all round the UK at different times with my band so could easily bring it along to a gig.

There once was a trumpeteer named Rick, Whose friends loved taking the mick, In his horn they hid a gar, And from the boot of his car, The stench made him feel really sick

Worst limerick ever.

Sometimes use a mandolin on stage, and one particular setlist had me going from an upright bass (scale length 42") to the mando in the next song. That was quite a change

Awfully brilliant or brilliantly awful album title puns.

2022: basses bought minus basses sold equals.....

One in, one out ( not the same one) Thought I'd done better than that. I will leave it up to the reader to decide what is meant by 'better' -
Playing whilst Sick (Tales/regrets when the show went on..)
sprocketflup replied to ARGH's topic in General Discussion
Played with a few diff ailments including broken bones in my fretting hand which was painful, but I think the worst was a show that I could feel a toothache coming on all day, which was getting worse by the hour. By the time of the show it was raging and I was going into the wings and clawing at my face between songs. I hope I never have to go through that again, I can handle most things but toothache is something else. -
Bought a Longhorn from Three, he held onto to it for a couple of months for me until I was passing by his place to pick it up. Great bloke to chat to and an easy fellow to deal with. Top marks all round
