Depends on woods. My big 5 strings ACG is really light. Lighter than my Vette 4 by some margin. It's black limba / Walnut body, and wenge / bubinga neck with macassar ebony board. So even this combo feels is very light. It was about the same as my K5 (mahogany / padauk, wenge / walnut / rosewood neck).

The usual mod I've seen for neck dive is to the strap button where the neckplate would be. Of course, doing that to your bird may be extreme, plus the button will catch on various things like that. Or something like that, if you have a bolt on. I quite like the Thunderbirds for looks and sound.

yup. Nice, no-nonsense pickups. Great tone and clarity (64's and 84's here).

Thumbs are crazy. Had a BO 5, really heavy, peculiar balance, difficult fret access at the neck, fat wenge neck, but sounded like nothing else. Not a huge range of sounds, but real agressive tone, with that low-mid growl and purr and some nice zing on top. I think you'll be more at home on a streamer, but if you decide on a thumb, highly recommend you try one with a strap and all for at least an hour, if your back can take it! Try the vettes as well. You don't need to spend massive amounts.

Not a mudbucker, although can output masses of bass. Stacked humbucker series / parallel / single. The preamp can coax a lot of range out of it.

Good bass the BB414. Good cheap alternative to Fenders, if you are after a passive workhorse. I've tried the 415 which was lovely too. I'd get that over a cheap active. I preferred the BB4xx over the 6xx series, despite the pickup selector and the lack of preamp. Problem is, I just found a K5 that was too good of a deal to pass up.

1K brings you close to customs. Worth trying a Second Hand Stingray HH (a little different than the standard Ray, with more sound options), a Bongo (if you can get past the looks), or a good Fender Jazz. With that kind of cash, maybe worth having a day out in London and check out the cool shops.

Phoar.... EDIT : Was looking for the Ken Smith factory tour videos but guess what... No no no... Mr Smith quickly pounced and it's now only available for purchase for the amazing price of $35, with complimentary polishing equipment and a T-shirt. The old boy never misses a trick! It was a great video. Well, there's still Spector's. EDIT 2 : Looking at the 'packaged deal' it's in VHS. Old ways indeed!

Yamaha BB415. Really liked it. Good B, good sound, cheap. Ibanez SR505. Classic in the range. Tasted a 505 but found a second hand Ibanez K5, same ergonomics. String spacing is tight. Excellent bass. Haven't tried much else. Quest ended with the K5.

depends on the styling and sound, but the BB414 is a good workhorse.

Nothing like the old school.
