  1. Some people are extremely picky too. I often look at the 1-star reviews of something I want to buy... and often there's a bunch of very unreasonable comments there. Reviews are tricky. It's come to my attention that there is a market for made-to-order amazon reviews (I'm sure other places too). A friend of mine has written a few for a wide range of items. She'd be asked to produce x number of 5 star, y number of 4 star, etc... for a given item, and she'd just sit, write them, and submit them to the company, who would then use other accounts, real and fake, to place the reviews online. It's a jungle out there
  2. but what's standard? 45-105? 40-100? Both are pretty 'popular'... Still, if I were the sales guy I'd have probably offered you to choose between them if I had both...
  3. My local one was open this afternoon...
  4. 12.8 pounds! what kind of alder is it made of??? It lacks the 'sexyness' of the natural "Session" model... but I probably like those pickups more.
  5. One review. Terrible review, but one review. He says he liked the sound and he could set it up nicely no problem... but complained about finish flaws and that the fret markers were painted. I'm happy to take my chances, I've read worse reviews about a Stingray
  6. Oh... outboard preamp! Then scratch the J-Retro... I misunderstood.
  7. John East J-Retro preamp... no question. And for pickups... I personally love the DiMarzio Area J. They're humbuckers but retain a lot of the classic Jazz bass spirit. They work very nicely together with the J-Retro (I have the same combination in 4 strings, after trying quite a variety of pickups)
  8. It's satisfying only for a minute, then I just want to say "now get lost, I think I'm going to have a BigMac instead next door" (not really, I really really like to eat well... but it's tempting)
  9. My view is that if after however many years people still argue about it, then the difference -if it exists- cannot be of huge importance, and it probably comes down to personal preference. So I file these threads under 'purely entertainment', conveniently... since my scientific background would go crazy if I tried to take these comparisons seriously.
  10. At least he didn't leave the parcel at the front door in full view of anyone passing by... which they do too.
  11. Nah. Just don't treat me like I'm a thief (I don't get that these days but I got it a lot in my 20s) or a moron without a clue (if I'm asking for something specific, don't give me BS, it's ok to say that you are not entirely familiar with what I'm asking) or like I'm a huge inconvenience interrupting your interesting chat with other shop assistants or your regular status updates in facebook. It's very simple.
  12. I had a well-off girlfriend a while ago... I went with her to try some Alfa Romeo car at the local Alfa dealer. Neither of us looked like we had any money, because that's just how we dress... There were a few slightly condescending remarks from the sales guy, until she said "nah, I'd just do a bank transfer for the full amount, no need for finance"... I wish they were a bit more professional. You can't really judge by appearances. That guy that shows up with a big Rolex and impeccably dressed may just be maxing up his credit cards... Back in Spain with another girlfriend, we went to a restaurant that I knew to be very good especially for steaks. Waiters dressed like ship captains etc put me off a little, but the place was very good... so I put up with it. Again, condescending attitude... until I order wine and I go for what I knew to be a nice bottle of wine (my father loves his wines so I have tried a wide range and know a little about what I like), and then the guy's attitude changed. Why do you have to wait until I somehow "prove" my worth to you? Snob attitudes really annoy me...
  13. It does look like a CV. The bridge with the brass saddles is typical. The original pickguard would have been black.
  14. It won't be 4 ohm once you add an extension cab, and THAT could be a problem as the amp was not designed for less than 4ohm. That is the issue: a combo with an extension speaker connection, yet you can't add an ext speaker without bringing the impedance below 4 ohm
  15. It is a good price... but it was Ashdown who made a mistake, and now the customer should pay for it? This has nothing to do with warranty.
  16. 'help you out of the situation you have found yourself in'???? Really? As if it were your fault!!!
  17. Judging by all the people I know that will be there... that's going to change
  18. Not a great response. I would have expected that by now they would have had time to do the right thing. It looks that with Ashdown it's a lottery. Some get great service, and others are left in the cold even if they clearly are right, like you.
  19. They're a treat. They're very nice offstage, and great fun onstage... a couple of them behave just the same way everywhere (hi Colin! ;)) It's one of my very favourite bands because they do well what they do and it always seems fun and inspiring. It's exactly the kind of band I would be happy to sign in for eternity in Hell.
  20. ??? how does 'lazy' come into this issue at all?
