That is pretty misleading And not very useful!

Hard to tell, but I'd say Bob Marley has survived longest without seeming 'dated' and it'll likely continue.

Basslines you don't know why you struggle with
mcnach replied to GarethFlatlands's topic in General Discussion
Same! It always felt like there's the wrong number of notes to fit in somehow. The verse was fine which is odd as it's all over the board and there's a lot of quick fills but I got it fairly quick. The intro still eludes me but I stopped being a fan and haven't tried their stuff in years.
it is a weird run... glad to hear I wasn't the one. It seems ok but when I played it, it took a few more goes than I expected to get it right. I played in a RHCP tribute band for about 4-5 years... that song never was a favourite of mine. But people loved it! -

Is there enough room to fit MM pickup at bridge on this bass?
mcnach replied to converse320's topic in Repairs and Technical
You may want to consider a "dual J" type of pickup, like the Modern Player Jazz or Maruszczyk Jake P/JJ and others. Essentially two bridge pickups side by side, wired as a humbucker. It'll be narrower so it'll fit in the space and they can be pretty fat and balance better with a Precision pickup than a single J. -
Very powerful pickup, great condition, lots of cable left. It comes with extra set of black covers. The originals have the large ear type which may not always fit your pickguard/body route. I got an extra set of black covers with the smaller type (Fender, DiMarzio, etc) to avoid filing. I also like it better without the lettering... postage included
Really surprised this hasn't sold.....lovely looking bassand a great price. GLWTS
indeed. It's caught me in a sensible period, otherwise I'd be all over this. Great basses. I'd love a Stingray-alike that looks as good as this, and RED! and MAPLE! but I'm slowly reducing my collection as I'm only using a small fraction of my basses... still, someone please buy this beauty before I do something stupid! Tom is a great guy as well, 100% trustworthy, so buy with confidence.

Yup, any passive Jazz pickups will do. Nice bass, by the way... I had the 5-string version and I thought it was great, only let down by the meh pickups. A set of Dimarzio Area J pickups would be a great improvement...

DR strings too long for an EBMM Sterling?
mcnach replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
Not a problem anymore ... I couldn't get the D string to grip the tuning post (coated strings too slippery?) and so put on a set of D'Addario EXLs that I had in my box instead.
How do you fit the strings? I put them through the hole, then bend them sharp as they exit the slot, effectively anchoring them. A couple of turns is all I need. -
New 62 in Fiesta Red just landed. Downsizing collection to one wooden bass only from my XL2, couldn't find a decent 2EQ Ray, and have really enjoyed a Matt Freeman Precision as my 2nd residence bass for past couple,of years following a bad MIM Precision experience years ago. My first relic bass also (wife and son: "it needs a new paint job" - sheesh!). Very impressed so far, nice comfy neck - rolled edges, 40mm B type nut, and sounds great with flats on. I can do anything from Motown (tone off)to 70s/80s punk and indie with a pick. Chuffed.
I love it! This coming from a guy who is not a fan of 'relics'...
Yes I was still in the band at that point but I think I wangled my way out of that gig. Couldn't face another year of crashing on the floor of Saska's flat with fourteen snoring hairy men...
can't blame you!

I use a 'small mixer' bag from Gator. Fits the Streamliner (and LM3 and other similar heads) very well, with power cable and speaker cables etc... but it's a strictly 'carry only' bag. I like some of the laptop rucksacks as they tend to have a variety of other pockets that can come handy, although the straps may get in the way: I carry the bass on my back (Fusion F1) so the amp is slung on my shoulder and back straps would be annoying. I like how the Gator bag has a neat squareish shape that helps me pack my car neatly.
Ah ok thanks. I left the band about 2 years ago and did a few Balkanaramas before then so I might've been there! Still doing the odd gig with them when they need a dep like on Saturday, bloody good fun. You're right, an amazing band.
It was May 2014... there was a fire alarm very early during the set in Glasgow and we all had to leave. You'd remember that if you were there
Really? Well that is some good news!
yup... in fact I'm a fan of those bridges as I can set the string spacing the way I want it (a bit wider than usual). I guess I've been lucky because I've had no problems so far with mine. No, I am not looking to buy another but it should sell ok and cover the cost of a standard BBOT Fender bridge with deeper grooves.
Last week I had someone agree to buy my bass from a Gumtree advert - price agreed and day agreed and then a email informing on the day of sale to say he was not going to buy. In my world if you get this far into a sale then it's a given you honour this but perhaps I am just old school ;-) I have loads of really good experiences from Gumtree buying/selling and will continue to use (for now).
luxury! he emailed you on the day!!! A few times I just waited at home for someone never to arrive, or reply to any texts... sigh. It happens. Too many idiots, so little time... just move on.
Aww my video didn't embed, what did I do wrong??
just remove the 's' after 'http', and surround the link with 'media' and '/media' tags (wrapped in square brackets where the quotes are)... then it'll look like that above. The Destroyers!!! I love that band. I had the good luck to support them a couple of years ago at Balkanarama in Edinburgh and Glasgow, they were amazing
I like playing guitar and bass equally but is there anyone here that used to play or tried out the guitar but preferred the bass. If so, what swung it for you?
I started out on guitar. I was not amazing but I could play a bit, but I never had any interest in playing live or bands. I tried the band thing but I found it difficult to find reliable people and I just wasn't bothered. Recording at home was enough, with the very rare occasion where I'd end up on a stage for a bit somewhere. I bought a crappy bass, because the recordings sounded better with some bass in the background going dum dum dum dum... but I never really cared. Then one day I ended up at a work event thing where we had a bit of a jam... but no bass player. I took the bass and gave somebody else my guitar. I knew the drummer as we had jammed a lot together... and found that we could communicate well... and suddenly bass was a bit more fun. Instead of going dum dum dum dum following the chords, I was just playing whatever I wanted and watching the drummer for changes etc... and I ended up leading, with the guitarist playing wonderful stuff that I could not come up with. That was fine, when it was about 10 of us between players and people sitting down... then the rest of the people started to arrive. This was at a function room in a hotel. And they wanted to dance. So... we provided the music. And THAT is when I fell in love with bass. I had a blast, and loved the ability to play with the rhythm and make people respond to it. I was so lucky to have such a good drummer... So after that I went and bought a 'real' bass. And I started paying attention. And I had to play with another drummer, live, so I started joining bands... and I haven't looked back. I still play guitar but very rarely. I cannot believe that I ignored bass for so many years. Playing bass led me to play in bands as it's not as good an instrument to play alone by yourself, and that led to a lot of fun in the fast 7 years or so, including meeting my girlfriend who started out simply as a fan of the band who'd appear often at our local gigs. And that's the story.

Rehearsal room: "Can you lock up when you leave, please?"
mcnach replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
These sorts of arrangements are fine until something goes wrong. The OP is clearly unhappy about it and I think I would be too. If it were me, I'd have a chat with the owner about my concerns, possibly by email so there is a written record even though I'd generally prefer a face to face chat. Perhaps a chat first followed up with an email just to confirm what was discussed?
+1 it seems easy going and fine... but what happens when something goes wrong? I'd be nervous unless there's good security camera coverage to show my innocence if/when it goes wrong. -
Alternatively, do what we did and put on your own gigs with a reasonably well-known band of the same genre headlining and your band supporting.
This.
I just saw it on your band page and I'm literally 20 mins away from Morpeth! If I spot you're ever in Edinburgh I'll get the train up to see you guys. Oh lovely, a JE preamp. I've been contemplating doing something like that to my Jake, but I'm unsure about it. What advantages would I really have outside of more control and a possible DB boost?
The next few gigs are Edinburgh (this week and next) and Glasgow (couple of weeks after that)... then we have a break. 'more control' is the answer. I really like that particular preamp, with the semiparametric mids module. In addition I'm trying to see whether that makes me like it more. The bass is great but I'm not convinced about my choice of pickup. I went with some Delanos with the big polepieces, because I liked that look... but they seem very very hot and aggressive. I'm just not *loving* it. Lovely bass to play, and so light and comfortable... but I need to change pickups I think. The preamp would help, with this or another pickup, and the black plate will offset nicely the empty top. I should have gone for that preamp from day 1 really. I have had one in my drawer for a few years now for an old project, so it's time I put it to good use.
Mcnach I had no idea you guys were playing near me and I missed you guys! By any chance do you tour with your Jake?
Pity. It was a great night! Both my Jakes are on dry land at the moment. I tend to use the Stingray mostly anyway, but I'll soon bring out the Jakes more. The red one (reverse P, bit closer to the bridge than normal) is being modified to incorporate a John East MMSR (Stingray) 3-band preamp, with a black plate to suit the other black hardware. I hesitated when ordering it and went passive... and there's only a couple of basses I like passive: a Precision and another Precision (ok, maybe a good Jazz). The P/JJ... I removed the P pickup and put in a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 that I like better... but I managed to break one of the mounting screws, and in order to remove the bit that was left I had to enlarge the hole a bit... so I need to fill the hole and redrill before I am happy to use that bass 'in the wild'... I still use it at home, and I love it... but I don't want to play live with a bass whose pickup is not firmly fixed in place. Not a lot of work, but there's always something else distracting me And I can't find anything that beats the Stingray
