If you can ship it, Dave Wilson is one of the best in the biz. If you're not on Facebook, let me know and I'll hook you up.
This!!! He's done my 75RI Jazz and lacquered the neck on my Stingray. Beautiful jobs, and the guy is as nice as they come
Honey Blonde, arriving next week, a used one. Not sure about the gold pick guard though.
Nice! what I really disliked was the touch, more than the look (which I didn't like either)... a white or black one would make it looke amazing
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I went with the MIM classic 50s precision. Saw one going for an OK deal and the colour was the biz. Not a beater bass, but hopefully I won't feel so precious about it. If I don't like it I can always pay cricket with the neck. Seriously though, should be able to sell on after an extended trial if it doesn't suit.
Excellent choice! The neck is what makes it or breaks it for most. I personally love it. What colour did you get?
I've not tried the Tribute but will do if I get the chance. The L2000 can sound quite like a Precision and sort of like a Stingray with lots of stuff inbetween !
The L2000 is a great bass, very versatile. It can sort of imitate some of the J sounds and a sort of a P sound, it does nothing close to a Stingray, but that's ok... the L2000 does its own thing. However, and I love mine, I just don't find that I fall in love with any of the sounds it does. It's all good but I guess I have a few sounds in mind, built in from listening to music over the years, and most of those are straight P/J/Stingray... and the L2000 could never satisfy me in that respect. So my solution is... owning Precision, Jazz and Stingrays... AS WELL as an L2000
I've always liked G&L and wouldn't mind having one of their basses one day, but how p bass like is the L2000, being active with 2 humbuckers?
It does something that can resemble a P bass if you just have to get a flavour hat resembles one... but if you want a Precision sound the L2000 ain't it.
When we're talking about the 50s style p bass, are we talking about sting type one with the tele style neck, or the one that still has the split coil and looks standard apart from a wide neck? Or are we talking about both kinds?
The Classic 50 series is the split coil version... The one on my avatar is the fiesta red one (with replacement pickguard as I don't like the original gold one)

Entwhistle Pickups - what are your thoughts?
mcnach replied to Grangur's topic in General Discussion
I'm playing about with an old PJ bass and trying to find "the right" P pups. I like the gravel in the thump. But I've already fitted an Entwhistle Jazz pup, now I'm trying to find a P pup for the job. I saw the Entwhistle PBX and I'd like to know what they sound like. Have you tried them? I did find this quote: But what does the word "fat" mean? What do folk generally recon to the sound of Entwhistle pups? For myself I'm looking for a bassy pup with an element of gravel in the guts, but not a "clank". I like the SD Quarterpounders, but will PBX tick the boxes? Does anyone have any recordings?
by fat I mean... big sounding? Not sure that helps. Strong bottom end and low mids. Sound big and bassy but with definition. Not a huge amount of treble compared to other pickups but they still have plenty. -
Entwhistle Pickups - what are your thoughts?
I bought a set of these P bass pickups. What is the script with the bar magnets? Never seen them on the outside of a pickup before. And the covers don`t fit in a Fender size pickup hole as the lugs are larger. No bigee but they will need some alteration to the pickgaurd.
or replace the covers like I did, about £4. -
They still feel different, for the most part. They're both classified as "wider" generally, and sometimes "chunky" but I find the Stingray generally the thinnest in cross-section of the two, even if it's wide. However, I find at home easily on either of their variations. I like the Fender Precision Classic 50 neck a lot. It's a little wider than a Stingray but similar profile, and the lacquered maple neck feels great.

Phil Jones headphones - where can I buy a cable for them?
mcnach replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
It looks like PJB will be sending me a cable if I just pay postage. I wish there were a faster way even if I paid for the cable, I don't mind that. But they seem like a good bunch My headphones will work again! -
*sigh* I so hope this was posted in fun as indicated by the smilies. Useful review but the discussion has sorta got dissipated along the way guys.... oh and the OP has sold her retro2x10 already.
it was all in jest, of course! It had a reference to some ridiculous thread (clown-whores was one of the interesting words that came out of it) but if you were not familiar with it I guess it could be taken completely the wrong way. Sorry about that!

Phil Jones headphones - where can I buy a cable for them?
mcnach replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
I'm guessing that you've already asked Phil Jones?
yup, I emailed but I'm still waiting to hear back -
I've had these headphones for a couple of years (H-850) and the detachable cable is starting to misbehave. I went online but I can't find a place where I can order a cable for them. Anybody has any idea? The jack that goes into the headphone is moulded and shaped to turn and lock once inserted and I haven't seen others compatible with it. Any ideas?
Seems to me he's just doing Stand Up (I know he's sitting down!) and having fun. I've thought most of what he says at one time or another in the last 20 years. It's just an aggressive satire. I would have thought everyone would know his routines are based on well known stereo types.
exactly

Orange Terror Bass 500, tasty! What's the 1000 one like?
mcnach replied to mcnach's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've used a TB500 for years, great amps with loads of heft to the sound and as convincing a 'valve' tone as anything I've used previously. I did change the valves to a set of lower-gain Philips ECC81's as this focused the sound more- complaints about the preamp being 'wooly' with the cheap Chinese ECC83's are justified IMO and are easily solved with some classier valves. I did get frustated by the limited EQ section whenever we played a difficult room, but invested in a DHA DI EQ which solves both the hot DI issue (mine is an early model) and the EQ issue in one go. £35 off this very forum. You won't need a 1000. You'll be going FOH before you'll ever reach the limit of the 500.
Thank you, that's very useful! -
The pickup itself has a label "ABP-1". And some people say it is Tonerider OEM. In any case stock PU is very decent vintage sounding pickup.
"PBA-1" is the label. (maybe ABP is the left handed version :-p) The Toneraiders have waxed cloth cables... it's hard to say for certain. I replaced the pickup on mine, but the original is not bad at all. I just like the Entwistle more: it's less of a traditional sound, so if you want classic P the Entwistle neodymium pickup would not be a good choice, but it was what I wanted and the stock pickup would indeed be a better choice. This bass doesn't stop to amaze me... it feels and plays so well!
HI again ,flat on bass is 9 0clock or 3,middle fat is 12 0clock,5,treble 3 oclock or 7 ish. That,s why you cut the bass back you were using your ears ,always the best way I don,t bother where the knobs are .I just twiddle them till I find the best sound I can get on the night but overall I love the terror sound and there is a lot of it. By the way it,s paired with a SP212 cab and boy can that little box pump up the -was going to say volume but the number crunchers tell you they are inefficient blah blah but gig one- it works with the head.and cuts through no problem with trouser flapping and bowel moving thunder. The difference between the 500 and the 1000 to try and answer your question is TB 500 and 1 SP212 cab can handle anything and the TB1000 with 2xSP212 cabs could shatter gall stones. I don,t care about SPL,v-max etc I,ve got ears and bowels that does me-over and out
Aha! Then I pretty much set the bass flat! That now makes a lot of sense! Yeah, we tend to asume flat is 12 o'clock, but it's rarely really the case unless clearly indicated. thanks for the comparison between the 500 and 1000. I take it tonally there are no significant differences, then! I suspect a 500 will be arriving in a not too distant future... -
P bass pickup advice: '95 Korean Squier v Classic Vibe '60s
mcnach replied to lownote's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't think anyone knows for sure that this is the case, but plenty of chat about it online. Take this page (relating to guitar pickups) for example: https://tidywords.wo...c-vibe-pickups/ It states: They are made in the same factory They are made by the same OEM producer They look the same They sound the same They have the same product numbers The measured output is the same. In any case, I have a Tonerider in my Mexican P bass and it sounds excellent, far better than the stock pickup. Quite a vintage tone, strong low-mids and not too bright. (I found the stock Mex pickup very harsh sounding). George
Interesting read, thanks! It still doesn't answer all the questions, too many vague details... so to me it looks like it could be, but I would not bet money on it. It would not make sense to use "the same pickups" yet use different cabling on them... I have had a couple of Tonerider humbuckers on a guitar a while ago and they were pretty sweet. My CV60 P pickup does not have a code name corresponding to a Tonerider pickup, and it does not look the same because of the cables... and I really can't think why they could not state the pickups use... Fender has used DiMarzio and the pickups were clearly labelled, several brands use Wilkinson and they're clearly labelled: it makes sense, it is generally a positive attribute to point out. It looks to me like some might actually be Toneriders, like the strat set labelled TRS3... but it's not clear to me at all that Tonerider got a contract for the whole range. Having said that... the CV Squier pickups are not bad at all, in any of their instruments. -
Oh dear, that was a silly thing to do. I've just had a look on the Facebook page after reading this thread and now I'm gassing for the white Jake five string on there (and it's in stock now)! Think I'd prefer it with just the P pup and maybe a black or tort guard though. Hmmm, am I right in thinking these trend to come in at under £1000?
You are right... sometimes a fair amount under £1000, depending on hardware/electronics choices and other options. My first Jake was only £650 or thereabouts. My second came up to £950, with lots of personal specs. And they're both fantastic.
I love the Bass. I love the Cabs. The hat is ok and the facial furniture, I can cope with. But socks and sandals....for Petes sake man, what are you thinking about!
I had misplaced my unicorn hair boots that day...

Orange Terror Bass 500, tasty! What's the 1000 one like?
mcnach replied to mcnach's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thank you for all the answers! Yes, I noticed that the EQ controls seemed subtle, but it sounded good, really good, so I cannot imagine wanting anything other than subtle changes to it. For instance I ended up bringing the bass control down a fair bit, because it was a rather boomy stage, so cutting lows there helped... but the character of the sound was just right. Hmmm. I'm of the "better have too much power and not need it, than getting short", but it does sound like a 500 might do just fine... Tempting! -
I didn't know they offered 24 fret necks as an option! That's me now very interested...
Anything else... just ask them. It looks to me like they would pretty much do anything you could think of.
