  1. Andrew and I just traded basses after a few PMs back and forth. The only thing that could have gone better is that because of the distance involved we did not get to meet in person! He was a real pleasure to deal with, he let me know when my bass arrived and he packed his bass nicely for me too and kept me informed all along. The stuff BC dreams are made of I wish all my transactions in BC could be as easy as this. Thank you! I hope you enjoy the Lakland.

[/quote] It's not JUST some dude slapping He works out the arrangements and plays rhythm and melody... there's a lot of thought behind the choice of notes he plays and how he plays them, and he does it with flair and having fun... His version of Master of Puppets is pretty cool too. You may not like it, and that's fine. But there is a lot more behind each version than "some dude slapping along to every song under the Sun", what a narrow-minded oversimplification

Blue [/quote] No, I think you're right. I think the people who play for free might play 30-60min typically max. It's a "fun" gig. Playing four hours is a job, you'd have to pay me, especially if money is being made around me and I am contributing to the vibe. The longest gigs I play are about 2h, typically. We play originals, and most are about 45-60min, and maybe a third of all our gigs are longer (90min-2h). You don't get the very long gigs playing originals... We sometimes play for free (or for a burger and beers and petrol money if out of town), but we don't do many of those.

You arrived and a song was already there... shouldn't you start by playing "the song" first? The bass doesn't play on its own, if you change something it affects how what others play sounds too, and you may thing it's better... but the band may not agree. New songs? Hey, you have free reign, and the song will develop together, but existing songs... you are free to propose changes, of course, but don't be surprised if the band prefers it as it was (and they may have been playing it that way for quite some time), and it would be arrogant for the new guy to take the view "I change what I want, because it's my instrument and my idea is better"...

I got three (I know, I got carried away ). One is in bits, half stripped, as I wanted to do some experiments with it regarding finish and pickup combinations and haven't had the time/will to finish it. Another was converted to fretless, and it's pretty cool. I had a CIJ 70s re-issue fretless Fender Precision, and I preferred the Sue Ryder (DiMarzio Model P pickup). The other one has a Wizard Thumper and that's all I did to it, pretty much. That's the one I use frequently at home, I have gigged a few times with, and appears in a video of my band. Unplayable? I haven't found a truly unplayable instrument (or one that wasn't just a simple setup away) in ages... Uninspiring? Many. Not always cheap ones! But unplayable? Not the SR! The necks were on the chunky side, even for a Precision... but not everybody wants slim Jazz necks, you know? I play better on bigger necks, and I play Jazz basses *despite* the necks, not because of them.

I have been playing the Precision exclusively since I got it, much to my surprise (I've never been a P-bass guy)... I can't say it's the sound I prefer *always*, I still want the Stingray and the Jazz often, but the Precision does another flavour amazingly well and it's a joy to play... Nice one!

  17. Ha, I felt much like you for a long time too. Partly because the first bass I ever had in my hands was a terrible terrible Precision, and partly because... I don't know, I just didn't like the sound. I have discovered, however, that I NOW love a good Precision. I just got a Fender Classic 50 Precision and I haven't played anything else since I got it. Somehow it's quite different to any other cheaper Precisions I've tried and owned, but I also like it a lot more than my friend's 70s Precision. So... maybe you should try a few before you decide to shoot for one that just leaves you "meh". A nice Precision is truly a beautiful thing. Funnily, however, the next best one was a very cheap Squier Precision, the Mike Dirnt model that I bought used for £115 including a small practice amp (long gone now). The neck is slim, for those who prefer slimmer necks - I don't - and it's light... and it just feels and sounds surprisingly good once set up properly. It will not make shadow over the Classic 50, but it's a pretty decent bass for silly money. Still, do try a few and don't afraid to try slightly more expensive ones, you might be surprised, like I was.

  19. Gav just bought my black OLP MM2 (with Seymour Duncan pickup and 2-band EQ preamp). Very easy transaction and pleasant communication all along. Great guy, I'd have no hesitation buying from him or selling anything. I hope you enjoy that bass, it served me well, it's a beast (in a very good way)!

But whatever you use the strong peak of bright fluorescence is going to be lost after 3-4 minutes. The remaining fluorescence, however, lasts quite a while, and it's clearly visible on a dark stage. If the stage is not so dark... then it's still visible as the dots are white. If the stage has UV lighting... then you'll be laughing, wear shades!
