but does he play in a band?
does it matter?
No not at all. Sorry for the confusion. What I am saying pertains to what I know about the Milwaukee Market. We have several known top notch players who do not play without a fee. I guess there could be other good musicians that play for free. Maybe I'm just a different cat, I can't imagine a musician playing in a band at a bar for 4 hours and the bar is turning over money like crazy and walk out empty handed. Blue
No, I think you're right. I think the people who play for free might play 30-60min typically max. It's a "fun" gig. Playing four hours is a job, you'd have to pay me, especially if money is being made around me and I am contributing to the vibe. The longest gigs I play are about 2h, typically. We play originals, and most are about 45-60min, and maybe a third of all our gigs are longer (90min-2h). You don't get the very long gigs playing originals... We sometimes play for free (or for a burger and beers and petrol money if out of town), but we don't do many of those.
If you're in an originals band and someone tells you what bassline to play surely you should politely tell them to go **** themselves? If you're new it doesn't matter how the bloke before played it. He's not here now is he?
I don't know about that. You arrived and a song was already there... shouldn't you start by playing "the song" first? The bass doesn't play on its own, if you change something it affects how what others play sounds too, and you may thing it's better... but the band may not agree. New songs? Hey, you have free reign, and the song will develop together, but existing songs... you are free to propose changes, of course, but don't be surprised if the band prefers it as it was (and they may have been playing it that way for quite some time), and it would be arrogant for the new guy to take the view "I change what I want, because it's my instrument and my idea is better"...
£294?! Makes me feel like a sucker, thinking how much I paid for mine! Unbelievable price for an incredible bass.
indeed! that's less than what I paid for mine... SECOND HAND! I guess mine will be with me forever now, there's no way I'd sell it for £150-200.
Just bought one from Thomann for £294 delivered!!!! Qthe blue burst one. Hell that's cheap, just a heads up.
That's crazy!
Anyone remember the Sue Ryder "craze" a few years ago? I know loads of people brought them but im convinced they were mostly unplayable. I tried 3 and felt they were terrible. Now these I can believe would hinder anyone, even me, and it's normally the other way around ;-)
I still use one of those regularly! Nothing unplayable about those at all. I got three (I know, I got carried away ). One is in bits, half stripped, as I wanted to do some experiments with it regarding finish and pickup combinations and haven't had the time/will to finish it. Another was converted to fretless, and it's pretty cool. I had a CIJ 70s re-issue fretless Fender Precision, and I preferred the Sue Ryder (DiMarzio Model P pickup). The other one has a Wizard Thumper and that's all I did to it, pretty much. That's the one I use frequently at home, I have gigged a few times with, and appears in a video of my band. Unplayable? I haven't found a truly unplayable instrument (or one that wasn't just a simple setup away) in ages... Uninspiring? Many. Not always cheap ones! But unplayable? Not the SR! The necks were on the chunky side, even for a Precision... but not everybody wants slim Jazz necks, you know? I play better on bigger necks, and I play Jazz basses *despite* the necks, not because of them. -
Actually I went for a Fender 50's Classic. I picked out 3 Squiers and 2 Fenders, and sat down with them for an hour. After one hour, this one came out a winner
Great choice! I have also just recently bought the same model (in red: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247828-nbd-fender-precision-classic-50/) I was very tempted by the cream one you got. VERY tempted. But I'm in a red phase so I went for that instead. But the cream one just oozes class. Yum. Like the above poster, I hate the feeling of the metal pickguard on my fingers... so I removed it immediately and put a mint-white one instead. I have been playing the Precision exclusively since I got it, much to my surprise (I've never been a P-bass guy)... I can't say it's the sound I prefer *always*, I still want the Stingray and the Jazz often, but the Precision does another flavour amazingly well and it's a joy to play... Nice one!
Looks like you dodged a bullet there, then.
yup!

Ha, I felt much like you for a long time too. Partly because the first bass I ever had in my hands was a terrible terrible Precision, and partly because... I don't know, I just didn't like the sound. I have discovered, however, that I NOW love a good Precision. I just got a Fender Classic 50 Precision and I haven't played anything else since I got it. Somehow it's quite different to any other cheaper Precisions I've tried and owned, but I also like it a lot more than my friend's 70s Precision. So... maybe you should try a few before you decide to shoot for one that just leaves you "meh". A nice Precision is truly a beautiful thing. Funnily, however, the next best one was a very cheap Squier Precision, the Mike Dirnt model that I bought used for £115 including a small practice amp (long gone now). The neck is slim, for those who prefer slimmer necks - I don't - and it's light... and it just feels and sounds surprisingly good once set up properly. It will not make shadow over the Classic 50, but it's a pretty decent bass for silly money. Still, do try a few and don't afraid to try slightly more expensive ones, you might be surprised, like I was.
I bought Jose's modded OLP mm2 stingray & he was great throughout the process, the bass arrived packaged very well & on time. Jose included some extra pick guards & also his bands CD..a recording so good it feels like I bought a CD & got bass for free!!
thanks Gav!!!

Gav just bought my black OLP MM2 (with Seymour Duncan pickup and 2-band EQ preamp). Very easy transaction and pleasant communication all along. Great guy, I'd have no hesitation buying from him or selling anything. I hope you enjoy that bass, it served me well, it's a beast (in a very good way)!
I paid £650? Probably about right for an 86. I always was lead to believe the mid 80's japanese instruments were more desirable
Sounds like a reasonable price in either case to me, if in good condition.
Cool stuff! Thanks for posting this. Has anyone tried charging the Luminlay dots using a strongish photographic flash? IMS some glow-in-the-dark substances are more easily/deeply charged with a flash than other substances, but in general, I have rather good experiences with the method. However, the OP seems to indicate one must use a special blue light (LED?), so a flash may be out of the question.
a UV LED flashlight works best. But whatever you use the strong peak of bright fluorescence is going to be lost after 3-4 minutes. The remaining fluorescence, however, lasts quite a while, and it's clearly visible on a dark stage. If the stage is not so dark... then it's still visible as the dots are white. If the stage has UV lighting... then you'll be laughing, wear shades!
So, having surrendered to GAS again, I'm now the owner of a Shuttle 9.2. Been using TC heads for a while through a Barefaced Big Twin 2, first an RH450 and now the 750. I'll say at this point that I do like my 750, I just fancied trying something else and seeing as every review I've read on the 9.2 seems to have not a bad word to say about it, I thought why not. First thing that struck me is how much smaller than the RH it is, I've never seen one in the flesh so that was quite a surprise. Plugged it in at home, everything flat and immediately get a pleasing tone ( tried it with my 'Ray, Bongo and Warwick). Quick glance out the window, neighbour not home, right let's give it the acid test! Plug the Bongo in, crank the volume up a bit, dial in some bottom end and,GOOD LORD!! It sounds immense, clean, punchy and powerful, exactly what i wanted to hear from the Bongo. Got a busy week with rehearsals, gigs and a jam night so plenty of chance to see how it sits in the mix, but from what I've heard so far I think I'm gonna be very happy with this little fella!
Ha, similar route here... RH450 to Shuttle 9,2, (via Markbass). I then went and added a Streamliner 900, and I like that even better! But both are fantastic
While on the subject of Paypal it's worth remembering the protection you have as a buyer. I payed for something as a 'gift' (not connected with ebay) and never received the goods. I trusted the person so sent the money as a gift therefore i have no chance of having that payment refunded. Totally my fault but it has taught me a valuable lesson in that i will never pay for goods that way again. Even if it's here on Basschat and the seller insists on a 'gift' payment. In that case it will be a definite 'no sale'. Once bitten as they say.
I have sometimes paid extra, to cover the fee and ensure the seller gets the full amount, and that way be protected.

TC Electronic is definately better than Markbass !!
Isn't that the power taken to power it & not the watts it produces ?
The point probably being that if it consumes 650W, it's going to be difficult to output 900W for any length of time, I suppose. -
150watt from a battery, that can't be right, can it? BTW I use a Roland mobile cube for busking, acoustic guitar and vocals, I have tried bass through it and it does sound better than you'd expect considering it's only got 2 x 4" speakers but I wouldn't think it could compete volume wise with anything other than an unamplified acoustic guitar, although I did get told to turn down once by a community copper, one of the shops nearby had complained I was too loud
Yeah, I would not pay much attention to the "150W" rating... but it *really* has oomph, no doubt. It's a loud little beast.

Five String Jazz Basses talk to me?! NOW A NBD THREAD !!!!!
mcnach replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Bass Guitars
Nearly a week, one full gig and a 2 hour practice with a different band in and I am liking it! Plays really well, I did not realise these 2012 onwards standards have the Graphite reinforced necks, I thought it was only the Deluxe but this has them and may explain why the B string is good compared to previous failed Fender V purchases? The rolled fingerboard edges are nice and it generally plays, looks and feels really good. The lack of bottom end is a bit concerning, I have the bass knob on full on my practice amp but it lacks that full fat bottom end of my Stingrays so I am thinking something like a Behringer BDI 21 to heat it up before it hits my amp's preamp a bit? Cracking bass though, good old Fender, they can still do it sometimes
(whispering) ... J-Retro -
Search for 'battery powered amps' on here and there's quite a few options - this one looks good in particular as you could amplify a whole band and it comes with a built in trolley as well as costing peanuts: http://www.amazon.co...ords=qtx+qr10pa
yup! that's the one I use!
