It appears to be a late 2005 one, according to: http://www.musicmanbass.org/mycustompage0032.htm so *probably* wired in parallel, like a "real" Stingray. I don't need a 4th Stingray I don't need a 4th Stingray I don't need a 4th Stingray I don't need a 4th Stingray...
Serial number is. X09758 I believe this has some significance over whether it would be wired series / parallel etc. Would appreciate some education on this if you could please.
you're a step ahead of me! That's exactly why I wanted to know the period! I cannot tell for certain, but I'm led to believe the first ones had the pickup wired in series. That's how my white SUB is, a 2003. My later wine red SUB has the pickup wired in parallel. I prefer the midrange punch that it has in series, I think it complements the 2-band EQ really well. As a result, my Stingray (originally a 2EQ) has a John East preamp with sweepable mids, and I have bought a similar preamp for my wine red SUB. The white SUB will remain stock. Off to have dinner... I'll check the number later, thanks!
Well, he is really really good. lol. BUT... he doesn't really do it for me. No disrespect. That's just my taste. His tricks are terrific but his playing with a band isn't particularly interesting. TO ME. His slapping is good but so is the slapping of thousands of blokes. So it comes down to his two handed tap/chord melody playing. That's where he's the master, right? Well, check this out. I believe what this guy is doing is so far beyond what Wooton has ever done. He's stupidly great. Never heard of him.
He is good, no doubt... and he uses a bass guitar, for sure. But... that's not "really" bass, is it? At least not what drew me to bass.

Not a sterling but definitely a bargain
mcnach replied to tayste_2000's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Here is a Sterling by Musicman similar to the one in the ad, used to great effect http://youtu.be/bwS4lX0P0-Q -

* note to self: don't encourage uncle_psychosis Ok... wah ordered!!!! It was hard to choose without trying one in person, so this may well be not the last of the series, as I may still return the pedal and get something else... but we will see. I liked the demos of the EBS wahs... but the wolume was not adjustable and I read a few comments about it being a little quieter than the dry signal. That, coupled to the high price, made me discard them for now. I was very curious about the G-Labs solutions. Great reviews all over. The platform alone would allow me to use my existing wah (Dunlop 105Q) which I like the sound of. Or I could get their Wowee Wah (love the name!), which gets great reviews too. Thomann sells both. I would have probably gone for this first... but it is kind of big, and uncle psychosis had alerted me to the existence of small footprint bass wah pedals. His word normally does not matter much (I mean, he thinks Stingrays don't look good! Pah!), but occasionally he makes good observations. So, enter the Plutoneium Chi-wah-wah. Another great name. Small foot print, the right controls... it's even automatically switching on when putting the foot on it. It's hard to find, 'though. The reviews seemed mixed. Some mention the bypass tone not being as transparent as it could ideally be... and since this is the reason to try something other than the 105Q, it worried me. Reading through the reviews of this pedal, I came across someone who compared the Chi-wah-wah, the 105Q, and the AMT WH1B. The AMT is true bypass, so bypass tone is not a concern. It is small too, yay! I was not particularly looking for small wahs, as I did not even think they existed... but the large size of the 105Q is a bit of a problem sometimes in my board (of course, being big is what makes its operation so easy)... so the AMT looked very attractive. no volume control... but there were a few comments about how well the effected level was balanced with the dry signal in a couple of the reviews. Then I checked its availability. Well, it's on Thomann and... it's actually not expensive! http://www.thomann.d...ass_wah_wah.htm So I went for this one. I felt it made sense to try the cheapest option that sounded like it would do the job. If I don't like it, it's easy to return things with Thomann, and I'll try something else. Probably one of the G-Labs options. Thanks to everyone for their input, much appreciated!
I was actually thinking you could gut the insides and BYOC... That would be really cool. Don't think the frets need any work, just a bit of tweaking of the action and definitely the pickup heights. I'm rubbish at setting pickups so another set of ears would be useful. Need my strings to arrive from the US first...
Cool. Let me know when you are ready and we'll find some time Although if you continue pronouncing blasphemous words (one pickup only looks wrong in a bass) I may change my mind
A single pickup at the bridge just looks wrong on a bass
You are lucky I'm not a bass Taliban...
I don't really like the single pickup version, but the twin pickup version looks amazing. Shame that they're from the American Deluxe range---well out of my reach for the immediate future.
you don't like the single pickup version? blasphemy!!!!! it's interesting how the 2 pickup version is not simply the 1 pickup plus an extra pickup nearer the neck, the bridge pickup has also moved closer to teh bridge, so the 2 pickup version won't get you the Stingray vibe as the 1 pickup does (bridge pickup in the wrong position)
Jose have you seen the Chi-Wah-Wah? Its not cheap but its tiny... http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/bass/plutoneium-pu-236-chi-wah-wah-bass-530569 Has level, Q, gain, and switchless bypass. Or, as a much cheaper alternative, I have an old battered crybaby wah kicking around. If you wanted to try it out (I'm thinking it could be a good base to build your own one) you can have it in return for helping me set up a bass The treadle is a bit loose but it does work OK.
Chi-wah-wah I already like it, just for the name! And it's tiny indeed, one of the reasons I don't use the wah much and keep it in a separate board. Ha! Thanks, I would not really think of another wah if I could solve the bypass thing on mine. Yours would be similar, I suspect. But I can try to help you set up your bass anyway, if you want. But I have to warn you, whenever it gets to "I think the frets need some work" I always take it to Rory Dowling, luthier and owner of Taran Guitars who abandoned Edinburgh for a farm in Pittenweem... he is really good, a great guy, and not expensive at all. In fact, I was thinking of visiting him probably in November, if interested we could go to see him together, just PM me.

This just came to my attention... Very much Stingray-inspired, but with a particular edge over the Stingray (in my case): string spacing is a little wider than on a SR5. This beauty above is priced at under £700 too. http://youtu.be/OxkXfSD-CvE

Jazz bass with two precision pickups
mcnach replied to Annoying Twit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a85d7e3b6 What would this sound like? Surely more precision than Jazz.
actually not so, because of the pickup locations. A P pickup where the bridge J should be will sound like a J on steroids. It's great! -
Vintage EST96 - is the pickup in the 'ray position?
mcnach replied to Greggo's topic in Repairs and Technical
I really can't see an extra centimetre or so making enough of a difference tone-wise to make it worth cutting a new scratchplate Personally I actually prefer having a little more 'play' in the strings for fingerpicking, even if it's minimal - the pickup's big enough that if it REALLY bugs you just move your hand down it...
I think 1cm, once you get so close to the bridge, is noticeable, from tests I did on an old OLP. Pity I did not record any clips. I intend to do something similar using a Precision pickup, I'll make sure I record the results and make a thread about it. -
The delay in switching off is controlled by a pot underneath the footplate. You can leave it to stay on for a couple of seconds or switch off immediately. It has a level, bass, and q control. I've certainly never had an issue with tone suck with it. Most likely that's why the demon gets used over te 105 which sits in its box
I didn't feel the "switch off immediately" was immediate enough... I think. I don't recall what it was exactly, it's been a while. I do recall it sounded nicer than the 105Q but there was something else that turned into a deal breaker for me. I wish I remembered! The EBS Stanley Clark seems great. But... ouch, the price. For something I don't use a lot, it's quite a lot of dough.

Looking for a Protec Case in the Uk
mcnach replied to rainbowreality's topic in Accessories and Misc
Have gone for the Protec, would have considered a Fusion F1 but would have had to wait for it to come in stock everywhere I checked. Looking forward to getting this, it's gotta be a million times better than my non waterproof, barely any protection PMT piece of rubbish!
Yeah, I got mine from DJM, in lime green/black... not because that was my favourite colour but because it was the only one they had left. I could not find it anywhere else. I'm sure the Protec is a great case anyway! Do report back with your impressions, please. -
The G-Lab Bass Wowee Wah is pressure activated and true bypass: http://www.glab.com....ss_wowee-wah_en They also make a true bypass pressure activated pad for wahs: http://www.glab.com....pass_wah-pad_en You don't need a chunky 3PDT switch for true bypass, these use relay switching instead.
That's interesting! Thanks!

Any idea what's the practical differences between the EBS Wah One and the Stanley Clark model? The Stanley Clark is a LOT more expensive, but I'm not quite sure, on paper, that the functions it has make it so much better than the Wah One... Frequency range is different, larger on the SC model, it seems...
The weeping demon by ibanez is both switchable and pressure activated. There is tons of adjustment available, and no bass loss. I've been using mine for about 9 years. It's one of the few pedals I haven't been tempted to change over the years
I had that pedal a while ago too. I did think that it sounded a bit better than the Dunlop 105Q, but there was a delay in switching on or off, I can't recall, which I did not like, so I sold it and kept the 105Q. I know the WD has an adjustable delay, but even at the shortest setting the delay was noticeable to me, whilst the 105Q was more immediate. It is a good pedal, 'though. It has a 2-band EQ, doesn't it? That is a very good addition. I don't know whether it was better than the 105Q at "tone sucking" since I didn't even notice the 105Q had this effect at the time.

I'm alright with losing the "automatically switch on" function, to be honest. It must have a level control, 'though. Any other controls are a bonus. True bypass or buffered... I have no particular preference, if the buffer is good and does not appear to affect the overall sound like the Dunlop does. That EBS looks like a good candidate! Thanks!
