  1. Oh, yes! And then there was the toilet paper they used... I'm pretty sure if you folded it a couple of times it could stop bullets. If we went to visit for a weekend I'd often hold it in until we were back home
  2. My grandparents survived just fine without central heating, and for a while without drinking water on tap (a small village, drinking water was collected from a public fountain). But they embraced the modern ways when they arrived. Similarly, I can do without a tuner, there's always alternatives... but why would I?
  3. I thought it would bother me more than it did. One of the things that I've always found getting in the way of my being comfortable with a 5 string was the spacing. I prefer 19mm spacing on 5 strings, so this one did feel rather narrow to start with. I have gotten used to it now, but for a while I considered replacing the bridge or perhaps just the saddles. The fingerboard is wide enough to allow a wider spacing (check the pictures), probably not quite 19mm but certainly wider than it is.
  4. So sad My condolences to her friends and family. So very sad.
  5. I was briefly in a band where the main guy (it was clearly HIS band, there was no doubt about it) was a bit like that. Not so much just complaining, but would spend the first 3-4 songs asking for changes to the monitors several times per song, and not precisely with a nice tone of voice (I don't think he meant to sound like an adult male chicken, I think he just gets very tense onstage wanting everything perfect)... That was not very nice, but what annoyed me the most was that he never wanted to show up early for soundchecks... which brought the issues he would complain about. If we had a soundcheck, even a short one, things would run much more smoothly. Great music (originals, fusion of funk and hip hop), I loved that, but he sucked the joy out of it and I quit after a few weeks during a rehearsal. He started giving us a lecture and complaining about the backing vocalist having missed a cue about a part where she'd take over the lead... but the rest of the band kept it going, we repeated the section smoothly and she picked it up correctly the second time around. She had been saying from the start that she could not hear the main vocals or the guitar and she was struggling. That was the last drop for me and I packed and left for good. The only band I quit when I was sad to quit, as musically it was very good. The guy is now a solo act. I wonder why.
  6. I came across this guy's youtube channel by chance and liked his approach and then realised he had an album out. Some cool tracks in there. These are two of my favourite ones. A nice if a bit generic 'soaring guitars' type of track... butit works for me. Love the bass in it too. This other one is probably my favourite "Seance". Especially when it gets to teh 2:30 mark or so.
  7. @owen There's 64mm between the centre of the slot on the B and G saddles = 16mm spacing. @PaulThePlug's guess was correct.
  8. That's horrific! I hope she recovers.
  9. Nope. I love Morphine but I never tried to emulate that kind of sound.
  10. That was my approach too when I was in a RHCP tribute band. The main bits are all there, but I'd incorporate fills and higher/lower octaves as I felt like. Nobody threw their shoes at us and people seemed to have fun, so I guess it was ok
  11. Last Dance With Mary Jane, eh? In my head I often start one and morph into the other
  12. If nobody tells you before Monday, I'll do it (away for the weekend).
  13. If other builders did it like you, I would not have the strong preference I have for maple fingerboards. I find dark dots on a pale background a lot easier to see on stage when I need it. Excellent solution, it looks great and it's very functional.
  14. Just in case: I meant it, thank you. I was just having a bit of fun with the CAPS issue
  15. Thank you for posting these clips... what? Thank you for p... oh, wait THANK YOU FOR POSTING THESE CLIPS!
  16. I agree. I like him, in general. He does some things that make me go 'urgh' at times, but I enjoy his style. That national anthem... I can live without, 'though.
  17. Fortunately for you, there's plenty other threads not involving Flea
  18. I'd say yes. I used one for quite a while and it didn't seem to lose bottom end. The tone control is pretty wide and gives you anything from really aggressive to thick and dense. My only 'problem' with it was that the gain and level controls are very interactive: turn the gain up a tiny bit... and the volume goes up noticeably. This means it's hard to tweak on stage: you can't just bump the gain up or down a bit and continue, you'll need to adjust the volume too. It's normal for overdrives to do that, but they're usually not as pronounced. It's a minor niggle really, and the pedal sounds very good both for bass and guitar.
  19. I completely missed that this was a used bass not new from a shop...
  20. The thing is, it's not really a £250 bass because that does not include VAT. VAT will have to be paid regardless, the only question is whether that happens at source, or afterwards, so the price is always 250+tax, if you know what I mean? It tends to cost a bit more buying from the EU than from the UK, but not THAT much more. Sometimes it even works out cheaper, although it's rare, but I noticed a couple of instances back in February, at Thomann (Germany).
  21. very much this transparency to avoid posible drama or at least awkwardness.
  22. I've been using a G30 since 2009 or 2010, with a leather pouch attached to my strap as I thought the belt clip was a bit flimsy. Very happy with it, still going strong.
  23. I met a guy who used to write for the Guitarist magazine. When chatting about reviews and how honest they can be he said that indeed, they sort of have to give good reviews since their advertising pays their salaries, and that the way to get the best info from the reviews was 1) for the good stuff, read the review, and 2) for the bad stuff, check what catagories didn't get 4 or 4.5 stars instead of 5
  24. Beware. I hated Precisions until I got my hands on a Sue Ryder, which I got just for a bit of fun and modify it... Since then I've bought probably 7-8 Precisions
