1. It'll be from parts As for pups I've no idea, I considered Bartolini
2. As the thread title sums it up really. I'm considering looking at building a top Jazz for around £500 - £600 if I can. So far plans I'm thinking of are an alder body with a flamed maple cap, translucent sea blue or wine red finish, gold hardware (badass, schaller heads etc), John East electronics. Really I'm just looking for other suggestions too, and ideas. Front or rear routing, what pickups, what woods etc. I want it to look fairly generic, but special too.
3. I'm doing Saturday and Sunday. All I need to find now is a decently priced hotel!
4. There's some mileage in buying a cheap bass and doing it up I reckon. But pickups are only skin deep. If anything they're the last thing I'd be looking at. First thing you can do is look at preamps, something like John East, Aguilar or Sadowsky. Following that I'd look at the hardware itself, maybe a nice heavy bridge like a Gotoh or a Badass II. You can change the heads too if you want, I had a chinese Tokai for a time and didn't really feel the need to. Set it up to your preference with a set of decent strings, and then you're on a good road. And you'll have saved quite a bit, especially if you get bits second hand. Pickups are your choice really, I find with jazz pickups, my MECs on one Warwick and EMGs on the other sound exactly the same. And bog standard J pups work pretty well too
5. Nah, no hum
6.
Me and a guy I know who's also on here are supposed to be going with our mate from Uni. I can't wait, I went to Bass Day in Manchester in 2010 and that was amazing so there's high hopes for this one haha. What do'ya know, he's already commented hahaha
c'mon, keep up at the back
7. I'll be there Coming down for the weekend with 2 uni mates, makes it much cheaper as we can get a 3 bed hotel room cheaper than a single, and they'll both contribute to my petrol. Job done Looks like I need to get myself a top!
8. Cheers man, it really comes to life under the right lighting too, especially stage lights. I'm not sure what differences there are if any between the waxes, everyone seems to swear by the Warwick stuff though and it works well with both of mine. The more you wax it, the less dull it'll become. Mine was flat as a pancake when I got it, used the wax a few times and it's really worked wonders. It's all about patience at the end of the day
9. For the strings, if you're keeping it fretless I'd suggest D'Addario ECB80 XL Chromes. Got them on mine and they sound absolutely epic! Gauge is 40 - 95 flats. And I reckon with some elbow grease with a pot of Warwick Beeswax, that grain'll pop. Looks pretty similar to mine:
10.
Phone Steve who works out of PMT in Salford. Top geezer, very good work and very reasonable. I think his site is theguitarrepairworkshop.com or somesuch. He's done some great work for me, including a really outstanding neck rout for my Fenderbird. He's on 0161 877 4962.
I'll second top marks for Steve Curtis, he's done work on both Warwicks and the 6er and he's a top bloke. Does a fantastic job in great time, he keeps me up to date with progress (he confesses it's easier to catch him by email than phone), and his prices are perfectly reasonable. I also go by what I know as the restaurant theory. I wouldn't go to an empty restaurant as it is probably empty for a reason. Same goes with Steve, his workshop is always full, yet he can always fit you in.

Sean's Feedback

Bought some wall hangers from Sean. Fantastic guy to deal with and a very smooth transaction. Top marks!
12. I never used to be a fan of gold until my Ash Corvette came. I've got the violin oil finish on mine though so it's quite a bit darker, but I reckon the chrome would look a tad pale on it. I want to put gold on my 6er which is red. Need to get the preamp fixed first though!
13. That looks lovely. Making me want to put gold hardware on mine!
14. Bump for £160. Or if anyone's got a Trace 2x10 they want to trade gimme a shout.
15. I weigh around 8 stone and it gets uncomfortable too. I find the back / neck support is also rather limited too, and eventually I get an achy neck
16.
Can that tuner be used as a metronome? I've been looking for a large metronome light (no sound).
Sadly not, would be a good one for Boss to consider though! I've got one on my iPhone by Steinway and I just put it on mute, acts as a counter with a stream on it. It was free as well.
WORLD'S LARGEST TUNER IS LARGE. What is the switch like on it?
Power switch? 1/4" jack sized
17. Here's mine. Got all I really need on it, I'm not into overdrive and such. Signals go into the A/B box, which then goes to the tuner, out of that into the chorus pedal (arrived this morning), and then into the MultiComp.
18. Want to get this shifted on if possible, after a trace cab to match the 1153 Warwick WCA 211 Pro 400 Watt 2x10. 300 Watt (400 peak), 8 ohm cab. Also has an adjustable HF Horn. Sits nicely on top of a horizontal Trace 1153. Mint condition, the big W has been sprayed off the front of it (took the grill off to do it!). Weights about 25kg and fits nicely into the boot of a Polo. Looking for offers around £160 collected from Rochdale or Barnsley
19. Not got any pics of it (and I'm back at uni) but my mum has a very early 1900s Rudal Carte Thinned South African Blackwood Flute. The headjoint is solid silver lined too. Sounds out of this world and was previously owned by Christopher Hyde Smith. We have a very old Conn C Melody Saxophone too.
20. It's my dad's but it's lovely
21. I was born into it, parents are both musicians for a long time previous, although it was never push. Started learning keyboard when I was very young in primary school. I think I was year 1 or year 2, something like that. When I went into year 3 I started playing Trumpet, was a bit crap and didn't like the weight of it, so by year 4 I moved to Cornet (in hindsight, there wasn't much difference in weight or playability!). I then went all the way up to year 9 in high school progressing with Piano (I switched from keys in year 4) and Cornet, and then I decided Bass was a good idea. When a mate let it slip that I was learning bass, some little sh*t turned round saying "I don't care if you're dad's semi pro, you'll never be as good as me", so that spurred me on a bit... it only took 2 months . By the time I was in year 11 I was playing in bands much older than me to a pretty high standard, but college wouldn't let me have it as my main instrument, so I sat through A level music for 2 years with Trumpet and Piano as my main (went crawling back to Trumpet because I didn't wanna go down the brass band route), and I also picked up French Horn and Double Bass at the same time, both of which I picked up stupidly quickly. And then in upper sixth they realized just how good a bassist I was when I was off timetable for a week doing studio work Once I left college, took a gap year and wanted to persue Bass, so I spent the majority of the time really fine tuning my playing, ended up getting into uni based on audition as my A level grades were crap. So now I'm at uni, Bass and double are my main, with Piano closely following. I've still got the Trumpet, sold the French Horn a few months ago as I wasn't playing at all, and it was too good an instrument to leave knocking around. So my first bass was a Hohner B2a which PaulS now owns, then I moved onto the Wal after about 2 months of playing which I ran for about 3 years (can technically say I learnt on it!). Dad decided he wanted it back, so got me a 5 string Peavey Grind which I probably should have never sold. Not long after we spotted the Warwick Corvette Fretless for not a lot of money, dad's take on it was that if I didn't take to fretless, then he would just have it. Somehow that one didn't work out on his part At the time my working amp was the Peterson, and eventually an Acoustic 470 and 4x10 for bigger gigs which I ran for a good few years. This was a good 3 or 4 years ago, in that period I picked up the fretted Warwick, then sold the Peavey 5 after leaving my last band, then started doing shows and regretted selling it. Due to the uptake in shows, I made the rig more portable in December '10, then I laid my hands on the 6er back in March. I'm in that lucky situation where I have all that I need / want! I wouldn't say no to a 5 string Thumb or a Marleaux Constat Sopran though
22.
Wow - another one! What box(es) do you play, and what keys? Have you checked out melodeon.net - (there's plenty of interest there in continental music) ? I have a (Chinese) Hohner pokerwork in D/G that I play for morris. That's me on the left.
Slightly small world My dad's a Melodeon player (amongst mandola, mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass). He's on there as falseknight. His boxes are a Delicia D/G and a Hohner C/F. Frets...well the Wal's his, mandola and mandolin are Fyldes, guitars are Martin and Hullah. All very nice!
