As it says in the title really, got a Trace SMX pedal that has recently decided to conk out (big gig tomorrow - worst possible timing!). It started happening when I got an 18V power supply for it, and it does it under battery now as well, what's basically happening is that it's now just popping and distorting everything, and not as if it's clipping, it's just not working. Sounds like the power supply could have fried something inside. Had it apart, and there's no evident signs of damage. So two questions, first off, are there any guys out there who specialise in Trace gear, and won't charge me more than the damned thing's worth, secondly, I can't find myself a cheap compressor anywhere to stand in for tomorrow night's gig, so has anyone local (Manchester area) got one I can borrow for the night in return for beer or something? Cheers, (a very f***ed off) Dave I've only had it a couple of months

Yeah my Acoustic 470 and Paulman 410 cab sounded epic with anything put through it. Only reason I had to get shut was getting the cab into the boot of a Polo was anything but fun. Although that said, getting my current rig, full drum kit, 2 basses and a guitar in (and a passenger) tonight was interesting

The two amps mine sounded it's best through (pre East conversion) were a Peterson P150 and anything middle age / old Trace They're not shiny shiny new, but they sound great! Phil Jones Bass amps go really well with Warwicks too, as do Roland Cubes

£1300 comes across as a lot for a korean built Warwick, especially when you can get second hand German ones much cheaper (£1000 got me a pair of German Corvettes with John East preamps). Having played one of the Pros in a music shop, it didn't feel much better than a Rockbass, and no where near as good as any German Warwick I've played. I'm not saying they're bad, but for £1300 you can get a lot more bass elsewhere.

Trace Elliot Classic Bass Rig
goblin replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Heavy??! I moved to one of these rigs to save my back from my Acoustic 470 and Paulman 4x10 cab -
Got a Hiscox - love it. Bomb proof and also versatile, it fits every bass I've got which is always a good sign For £40 you can have my Stagg ABS case. My Jazz moved around a bit in it, but foam harmlessly holds it in place, and Fenders may fit differently to Tokais

I use and swear by Dunlops, although did a gig without them on Friday for the first time in years However, nifty little trick if the hole's too large, I get a match and chop the firey red end off, and then with a sharp knife (swiss army will do) shave it down, stick it in the hole and it plugs it up, but not so much you have to redrill it. One my dad's been using for year and I use as well now.

On Friday I had a pretty good first gig with projectAURA at The Ruby Lounge. Had less than a week to learn a full set as their previous bassist left at short notice, so didn't go as smoothly for me as other gigs have, and the venue was pretty dead too, but all things considered I'm pleased with how it went, and also happy to be gigging again!

Ah might see you there then, I'm playing with projectAURA for the official after party at the Flying Horse on the Saturday night. Doing Ruby Lounge this Friday too

HOW MUCH?!?! I'd sooner stick to buying what I need from Maplin and other good electronics franchises and stick to being handy with the soldering iron! I've got two solderless leads and they've been the most unreliable ones I've ever used.

I've got the best amp in the world! (but I never get to play it)
goblin replied to gjones's topic in General Discussion
When I DI I make sure it's taken out of the amp, although it was a little bit embarassing when we first tried it for the last show I did and it didn't work (first time I'd used that DI). Once it was working it was brilliant though, and I use it a lot now. Sometimes the cabs get mic'ed too which gives a much more true sound to the basses and amp together. It's possibly seen as a tad old fashioned compared to newer EBS and Markbass, Aguilar etc, but at the end of the day it works well and it's a sound I love - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So for gigs, unless the venue won't allow (last gig for example where I had to use some sort of Eden Nemesis combo which was crap), atleast the Trace head goes with me. -
£70 to £80 seems about right, same as what I paid for mine a couple of months ago. I reckon it'd be worth keeping though, for the money you probably won't get a better pedal.

I thought about getting one after borrowing one and they're cracking, I just thought the display was a little small. The TU1000 has bigger display and more flashy lights

I've got a Boss Tu1000 and love it. Does the job perfectly and comes with flashy lights

I've got an Electric Double Bass, a normal bass and a small combo on a bus before. That was fun, resorted to getting a lift home -

I used to split between 3 rigs, practise and really small gigs (open mic night etc) I'd take a Peavey Basic 60 or a 150 watt Peterson Combo, bigger gigs got the 4x10 and Acoustic head, but it was such a pain choosing and as more big gigs came in, it became a back breaker. Now I've got the Trace rig it's great because I can split it. For small gigs / practise / shows, the cab, head and my pedal flightcase fit nicely in the boot of my Polo, bass in gigbag on back seat. For bigger gigs, drop a seat and the extra cab goes in, basses go in a Hiscox just to play it safe. It's not too heavy a rig either (compared that that bloody 4x10 anyway ) -
They're doing well if they can get it through the window I know someone who's a periperatic (or however you spell it) teacher around schools, so he leaves stuff in his car all the time and never has issues. I've left stuff in overnight, such as coming back from a gig at silly o clock with a fully loaded car. I'd take the nickables out, but if anyone wants to try running off with a 50kg 4x10 or a gazillion kg Peavey Triumph, as previously said they're more than welcome to it

I found a lot of the slap there was tasteful / good in it's own way, but when you add it all up, it still turns into a slap overload. I'm guilty of slapping too, although I'm not a great slap player so I keep it to a minimum. There were a couple who took it too far though. I could hear the noise as I was driving round looking for somewhere to park
-
I'd say that he isn't just a slap player and he does a lot of other playing as well, and that's coming from the horses mouth...but as you're all more than likely to be on your soapboxes, I'd be wasting my time
-
Interesting though, I never said anything about it last time

I didn't even bother looking at the Yam stand, and roto were slapping to death too.
