1. Yeh they're just like the tone control on a passive fender but they work in both active and passive modes! Excellent for more of a vintage vibe! even better when used with the treble boost in varying amounts of each to create some great textures! I wouldnt be without mine
2. Just bought Will's Squire jazz! What a lovely bass! excellent condition too! Great guy to deal with, no hassle, no fuss just how i like it Cheers
3. Any pre should work if you have room in the cavity for it Try an East u retro or a sadowsky
4. I had a bravewood jazz with wizards a while back! Great bass......until i added the Audere pre!! Noisey as hell!! Went back to a passive stack pot arrangement! Much better! If properly sheilded ( the grey paint is better than foil IMO) ive found the sadowsky pre to be one of best for low noise!
5. Ive been through this situation before!! i had some beautiful Sadowsky 4 strings (3 at the same time) i changed bands and needed to move to 5 string and couldnt use the 4's in my band anymore!! it took some guts to sell them! especially the NYC but once i got my 5 string sadowsky ive never looked back, it does everything i could ever need it to do and more! if you think about it you only really need one versatile 5 to cover most situations its nice to really get to know that one bass really well and play the hell out of it!! haha
6. i had no idea these were available!!?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Japan-5-S...4#ht_6025wt_907

An NYC will cost you more like £3000 and in IME they are no better than the metro's! Just different depending on what extra NYC options you select! If you like something and can afford it.......buy it and enjoy it regardless of price!! If you dont then let people make up their own minds! Personally if i could get the same results out of a £100 bass i'd be playing that instead! I dont care what name is on the head! If it works for you its worth it!!
8. This is what tone woods are all about (skip to the 3 minute mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmFSivO5Tuk
9. I recently refretted my old defretted Aria haha it was a bit of a task simply because the guy who defretted it cut the fret slots a little wider to fit the wood veneer in! i managed to saw the veneer out quite well, trouble is the frets were way too narrow for the slots! so after filling and recutting the slots i managed to do a pretty dam good job considering its condition and the fact it was my first ever fret job! turn out to be quite playable so im very happy with it! All i'll say is buy the right tools for the job (if you dont already have them of course) it makes things way, way easier
10. If i still played 4's i'd be all over this!!
11. I'd go for Alleva coppolo's or Sadowsky singles! Wizard j pickups are also good if you wanted a more cost effective option
