1. DR neons are just awful!! Had bad experiences with black beauties too! Dead strings in all the packs ive had! Cant say enough good things about their fat beams though!
2. I wonder how much money / red paint they save by not doing the 3 tone burst on the bottom horn??
3. I already have a 2nd gen Super12T and a Midget T but i really can't help but want a Big Baby 2!!! Has anyone had the pleasure of trying one yet?
4.
Chris, could you please create a new thread, when you have finalised the specs, so that I can pin it as our build-diary-cum-bass-journey? This is awesome
Of course! Let the head scratching and decision making commence!! Haha so many cool options!!
5. It sounds like a four string will work for most people. I have a few spec ideas already! really excited about this one! Once the bass has been around everyone on the list it will probably be offered for sale (with ex demo pricing) to all basschat members
6.
Does it have to be gigged? I'd be up for it if not.
No, you can just play it at home or wherever you please
7. All sounds positive so far! Excellent stuff!! Will get working on the spec for it soon! The real debate is how many strings? 4 or 5? Hmmmm
8. Shielding paint is good... ...copper tape with conductive adhesive is better!
9.
Were they all exactly the same shape, and feature the same construction, just different woods? And more importantly did they end up sounding like you imagined before building them?
Yep, all exactly the same design, shape, body thickness and 6 bolt neck joint etc. (we only build one bass style) And yes, they turned out very close to what we imagined
10. £600 is ridiculously cheap for such a beautiful example of german engineering!! This is a cracking bass!!
11.
Lush... PM'd
Replied
12. Hi This is a stunning example of what a gibson should really look, sound and feel like! It is number 100 of a 275 run of limited edition instruments made at the Nashville Plant, TN, USA August 21st, 2004 Bought from Austin, Texas Featuring a beautiful ebony fingerboard, limited run trans red finish and all chrome mini tuners, I feel it looks even more classy than the standard offerings! It has been gigged over the years so there are a few minor signs of cosmetic wear / mojo but nothing that affects the playability of the instrument. Im fact, it has just had a fret dress and a full MOT style service in our workshop so it's good to go. It comes with an official Gibson hard case too. You are welcome to visit me in Saltaire and try the guitar out in person or i can arrange to meet within reasonable distance of BD18 (bradford / leeds) Pics (there are light reflections on some of the attached images, these are not dings. The only real dings are the "belt buckle" ones on the rear of the guitar and the circular string mark on the headstock) The asking price is £1295 ono Cheers Chris 07974 317 284
13. Hi I bought these a while ago and never got around to using them. They are in excellent if not mint condition as they have just been sat in a draw for the last year or so. They are really nice quality with the great feature of being able to adjust the feel of the tuner should you feel the need Anyway i'd like £35 inc p&p for these. 14.
I always find this kind of topic fascinating! I would like to believe that it's more about the electronics than specifically about the wood but then I do own a tele copy made of plywood. That said the pickups in it originally made it sound crap, but the upgraded pickups I've installed have made a massive difference in tone, and they were only inexpensive Wilkinson alnico tele set as used in the vintage v52 - improving the pickups does help a great deal in improving the sound that comes out. I just can't help thinking that it's more about the quality of the 'things' the string is attached to (bridge all the way to the tuning pegs) that is more influential on the tone of strings relative to the magnets that pick up the vibrations (if that makes any sense) Eg if my cheap tele copy, (providing all measurements were correct in terms of scale length, pickup position of a real tele) had the same bridge, pickups, nut and tuners as a real tele there's no reason why through amp it wouldn't sound any different? I may be wrong and I have no scientific backing but it seems more logical to me personally.
The last three basses i made all featured the exact same pickups, electronics, bridge, nut, fret wire, tuners etc. the only difference was the wood. Played side by side using the same amp, lead etc they all sounded very different to each other
15. Sometimes dead spots happen when a fret isn't quite as well seated as the rest. It may be worth having someone check this. They should be able to easily remove and re-glue the fret back in.
16.
This looks wicked! Any chance of some more pics of back of neck, was it literally 1pce ebony? Does it have any neck dive, I'd imagine that to be a heavy neck!? Fab ideas and execution
Hey This is indeed a one piece ebony neck This particular piece is no heavier than a wenge neck so there are no balance issues. Also we use hipshot ultralite tuners and we have a relatively small headstock which all help. I will try and get some more pics up soon Cheers Chris
17. Well it looks like i missed a great day!! I hope to be there next time!!
18. I ordered three of these (4 & 5 string bass and 6 string guitar) to test on some instruments i'm currently building and i can say that i don't like the way they set up at all. On paper they sound great but you have to file a groove in to match each string and once you do they no longer turn / adjust very easily. The warwick version looks far better
