1. I asked this question in my build thread but I think it's being missed. Which side (top edge) lights work the best on stage, blue or red? Jon (Shuker) seems to think that blue ones may get lost and advised me to throw the question open the floor. Help me out guys Cheers Pete
  2. This is the only pic I got Me, the much vaunted wood store and a piece of buckeye burl. Jon is in the background handing me some of the most stunning examples of wood (how I escaped is anyone's guess)
  3.
Superb. I look forward to watching this one progress.
You and me both Brother!
Excellent, that sounds like a great spec. Jon is great to deal with. Whats your estimated build time? I'm off to see Jon on Tuesday!
Thanks A-D, Jon is a great guy, he obviously love what he does. He estimates 14 weeks give or take, the wait is going to drive me mad but I guess you can't rush quality.
  4. ...and so Tinman went on his travels to Sheffield. After getting lost a couple of times he found his way to the home of bass guitar goodness that is Shuker Guitars. After much discussion and a visit to the wood store (I know, I know) the following was decided: Body: shaped as in the pic shown earlier in this thread but built as a bolt on core - Black Walnut facings - Buckeye Burl front and back Veneer - White sycamore between the core and facings Matching cavity covers Finish - wet look gloss Neck: 7 piece maple/black walnut/maple/mahogany/maple/black walnut/maple laminate fretboard - Birdseye maple, 24 frets fret markers - Abalone dot side (top edge) lights (can't decide between blue or red, Jon said to ask you lot which is best on stage) controlled by volume pot push pull. medium fretwire headstock - Black walnut with Buckeye burl front and back neck finish - satin laquer nut - graphite/brass Electronics: Jons own 3 band eq with mid frequency adjust Pickups - we didn't decide today. After much talk of the properties of various pups we decided to dispense with the idea of Musicman style. I played one of his stock basses fitted with EMGs, loved it. However, Jon has some Delano pups coming soon and when they do he will try them out to see if they will suit. Other than that we discussed the idea of a combination of the EMG DC and J which I'm already leaning towards. Other: Tuners - I'll probably go for the standard. Jon seems to think that they won't cause any neck-dive but we'll check when it gets to that stage Individual bridge saddles Dunlop straplocks And that is about that. I could really do with some advice on the sidelight colour, Jon was saying that the blue get easily swamped by stage lighting more so than the red ones. If any of you out there use them could you give me a recommendation. A really great trip to meet a really decent and very knowledgable fella. To all of you who gave me help and advice I send a great big thanks. All I have to do now is wait for Jon to take some pics for me and then I can show you.
  5. Love the buckeye burl
  6. That's just plain awful. What bass was it?
  7.
Quick! before it goes.. have a look on basstalk and search for sennheiser ew172 g2 Cracking wireless. rack mountable (with an arial extention gizmo) No tone loss if any, all sorts of goodness about it. I typed it all in before and it should all be there Best price I found was £325 from stagebox.com but that was Feb 2006 ... should be a few on t'bay.
Si, are you trying to get me to buy something else? My God man, she'll kill me
  8. I've got the Freeport. I stopped using it a while back because I thought it was affecting my sound, however thinking about it, I realise that was possibly because I hadn't set my amp up properly. I'm going to go back to it and give it another try, I'll let you know.
  9.
Cheers Pete ... Tell Jon that tomorrow will you?
Sure will mate
  10. Si has been a huge help in my research for my upcoming build. Priceless Thanks mate
  11. I suppose it's like anything else, the more you spend the better they are. I bought an H+K Zentera modelling guitar combo, brilliant but at £2500 you'd expect it to be (I didn't pay that much for it by the way)
  12.
Hi Tinman Can you ask Jon about my "sparkly" bass when you're their too. He'll know the one your talking about ! No pics yet, but when I do i'll start my own build thread. Cheers Stephen
Will do mate Pete
  13.
I spoke to Jon last night about my bass. Apparently the Coolibah on the back has come out really well and looks pretty stunning. Hopefully the Bimblebox on the front looks at least as nice. Something I still worry about in my darkest moments. Even Jon's best assurances that it looks great aren't enough to quell that particular fear. Two weeks (ish) to go. \o/
Photos on Saturday mate. Could you give me a little more gen on it, e.g is a 4 string or a 5 etc. I don't want to get the wrong one Pete
  14.
"Quilted maple top in high gloss finish ( Jon says the finish will be that good it will seem you can put your hand in it ! ) " looking forward to seeing that!! Fragility it will get you its just a matter of time, "doodle" got me, and Tinman is the latest victim
I am and loving it, although Mrs T is starting to say things like "can't you think of anything else?" and of course the answer is NO
  15.
It's because the oaks are too lofty, grabbing up all the light, allegedly.
I expect that would make sense if I actually understood what you were talking about
  16.
Good luck. A good idea is to think in terms of woods that balance each other out, for example a soft-ish core (eg mahogany) with harder wood facings (eg macassar ebony. By the way, that's going to be my choice when I raise enough money for an Alembic series fretless...
Thanks mate *scuttles off to look up macassar ebony* I looked at the Alembic site once, scared myself half to death
  17.
Ken Smith's page is very useful too: http://www.kensmithbasses.com/woodpages/wo...gecontents.html
Thanks fella. It gives me a few ideas for when I see Jon Shuker on Saturday Edit: So many choices!!! I think I'll just talk to Jon but at least I've got a little more idea now.
  18. Cheers dlloyd Edit: The site raises some interesting points for me and explains why my Ibanez basses are so annoyingly bright - too much maple

    Clock
I had the same problem. I solved it by changing my time setting to a different time zone, and turing off Auto DLS, turning on DLS. I saved it, then changed them back again, and the time is now correct.
Tried that and when I logged out and back in again it reverted back to being an hour ahead.
  20. Does anyone know of a website that extensively covers the properties of tonewood in relation to bass guitars? Cheers Pete
  21. Dr Dave If you don't mind me asking, what are the specs on the Shuker? It's stunning!!! Particularly interested in what the facing is made from.
  22.
Rich Yes thats the one. I went on holiday, came back, and the build had come on leaps and bounds. The build thread has not been as detailed as I had hoped. So I recon the next lot of photos will be when its done. Unless fellow Basschatters go to Jon's and take and post photo's
Now I'm confused. Would you like me to take photos or would you rather I didn't. I don't mind, no really I don't, I'm serious, come on now make up your mind. Or is it that you secretly want me to but won't admit it. Go on, you know you want to.
  23. No arguments from me on that one
  24. Epic are five 17/18 year olds from Bedale in North Yorkshire, two of whom I used to be in a covers band with when I lived up there (the lead singer and Wil, one of the guitarists). I was just wondering if you guys would give them a listen and tell me what you think, reason being, they need their arses kicking if they are going to get anywhere. http://www.myspace.com/epicrockyourmyspace Thanks guys Pete
  25.
Tinman, many thanks, but I recon the next time I want to see it, it will be when its finished.
No worries mate, just thought I'd offer.
