Braguesa - £220 + postage
Wil posted a topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
I bought this new a few weeks ago from Hobgoblin. Typical impulse buy, I thought I'd end up using it on a load of recordings but it's not really the sound I need. It does sound lovely, though, a bit like a 12 string guitar crossed with a mandolin. It's exactly like this, and is in as new condition: http://www.hobgoblin...aguesa-page.htm You can see it sat behind me noodling in my living room here to get an idea of the size: £220 + postage ONO. I need a pedalboard, ebow and a volume pedal if anyone wants to trade. -
Great stuff. Interesting how the bass is backed off in the mix to allow the toms to come through in the chorus. Unsure if that happens on the actual song or if it's just on the isolated tracks?

I'm selling my DSL 100 head - it's a bit tatty (scuffs in tolex, the black grill on the front face of the amp has come loose) but does the job (sounds great!). Revalved and biased recently. There is an issue with the 16ohm speaker output, I'm led to believe this is fairly common and can be caused by a ground wire coming loose - I havent the time to sort it so I've priced the amp accordingly. I used the amp a few weeks ago when my AC30 was out of action, and the normal 4/8ohm outputs work fine. It sounds really great, I'm loathe to sell it for this money but can't justify having two amps. Check on the Statii forums, I'm sure they come up from time to time. Like an S2 Classic but with a slightly different pickup arrangement I think (P/J)?

Having been born and raised in Bath, it's not Baff, or Barth, it's, er... Bath!

I'm still very happy with my AC30 choice - I've been using it for home practice and recording and getting some great sounds at low volumes (particularly like the top boost channel with treble and bass at around 3 'o clock), but will finally be taking it to a proper band practice at the weekend and cranking it up. Maybe hearing it full whack will make me re-appraise the sounds I've been getting at lower levels? Either way I'm looking forward to it!

Before you invest in a new bass, have you changed the strings lately? Even if you want a thuddy tone and end up EQing out the treble and zing of new strings, there's a lot of harmonic detail lower in the frequency range that dies off as the strings get old - it can make a huge difference when recording. The weak link in a lot of cheaper basses tends to be the pickups, so it may also be worth considering a pickup upgrade rather than scrapping the instrument if it plays well (as a lot of modern budget basses do). I record using a parts bass made out of all sorts of cheap bits and bobs, but I chucked decent pickups in and it sounds great (all I care about really).
Amusing - but it's essentially a stuffed badger wrapped around an ordinary theremin.
Indeed - if you were expecting a faithful electronic emulation of the dulcet tones of a badger being played acoustically in the wild, prepare to be disappointed!

I bought a Braguesa t'other day: http://www.hobgoblin...site/gr3614.jpg It's rather nice! 10 strings in courses (3 octave pairs and 2 identically tuned pairs), and traditionally tuned CGADG - this tuning didn't really appeal so I've since retuned it DGCFA (D standard guitar tuning minus the high D). Soundwise it's somewhere between a mandolin and a 12 string guitar, and it packs a remarkable punch for such a small bodied instrument. I'll be using it on the album me and a friend are currently recording, so once I have some recordings I'll be sure to post them up if anyone is interested. Has anyone else delved into the world of slightly obscure acoustic instruments? If so, what have you got?

Should mention I bought a Rat off Oli (via facebook rather than BC) a few weeks back and as usual, he was a gent to deal with.
Not sure about these, but I still want a fretless with a granite fingerboard:
To me, that just looks like a kitchen worktop...

Stainless steel frets are apparently are right bugger to dress, due to the hardness, so I'd hate to think what these are like. I've got SS frets on my warmoth guitar, no difference in sound and not much difference in feel (the main advantage is it reduces the chances of my nickel allergy flaring up). I also once had a P bass refretted with SS - on this instrument there was a noticable increase in fret clatter. So, I'd say, if your hands are ok with nickel... stick with nickel.

Beatles, for sure. McCartney has a gift with melody, no doubt about it, but he needed Lennon's cynical edge to reign in the twee factor. There were still plenty of Beatles tracks where he edged over the borders of good taste, though... Honey Pie, Maxwell's Silver Hammer... urgh.

Does anyone know of a good free Harpsichord VSTi?

Kent Armstrong Soapbar Pickup: any opinions/experience?
Wil replied to Spoombung's topic in General Discussion
I have an Aaron Armstrong wound bridge soapbar in my bits bass. It was originally intended for an ACG I think. It's very well made, cast in resin. Sounds good - thick but plenty of top end detail. -
Thanks for posting that - Cass is one of my favourite players. Not sure about the bass but looks pretty neat if nothing else.
