1. It's called the Haas effect I think, hearing the same guitar part with a very slight delay tricks the ear into hearing one big fat guitar part. I've been using it recently on some band demos too and it really does work a treat, using a 34ms delay with no feedback on the doubled guitar. I've been experimenting with slow attack, fast release compression settings on the guitar too to give it a bit of a "pumping" sound - still refining the best way of achieving that but it seems to add a lot of whallop on our heavier sections.
2. I gig my parts P a lot. Body is from an encore, I've upgraded the neck/pickups but it still comes in at under £150 I reckon. Love it to bits, and it sounds great - I really don't see the need in spending a fortune for a working bass guitar. I like a traditional sound though, if I wanted to sound like Marcus Miller or similar then I guess I'd want something a bit more hi fi, but I've found you can get some really great full low end and articulate mids from cheap planks.
3. Withdrawn (for now at least) - I've not had any real bites and my VT bass just arrived. I had to try the Sterling through it and... well, it sounds awesome
4. I'm afraid I'm just looking for a sale at the moment.
5. You could shift the bridge slightly to compensate - seemed like more hassle than it was worth to me though, I found when I was playing it I quickly forgot the aligment was out.

ODB-3 alternatives

I've had one for a short while, and with the blend it does retain all the low end and more, but I have a feeling on higher gain settings the mids get scooped. I tend to keep the blend at a quarter and the gain low for that reason. I tend to use it when the other instruments drop out to fatten things up too, in a band mix it does get a bit lost - I'm getting a VT bass for my regular overdriven tone for that reason.
7. Bump - pricedrop to £350.
8. It may or may not do, I didn't do much filing of the nut to get the B in there, but I did do some filing. Who needs a G string anyway, I say
9. Bump - offers?

Tonewoods

My go to bass is plywood. It sounds great - I'm pretty convinced most of it's tonal character comes from the pickups and pickup placement.
11. The best musicians can make you weep with one note - it has to be the right note, played in the right place, the right time and with the right feel, of course.
12. I tell you what though, I do miss the portability of the 1212L sometimes for small, low volume gigs. The 410L, much as I love it, is overkill for a lot of situations with PA support.
13. I've got Largo's old 410L, which I went to after a 1212L. It's definately still got that schroeder mid presence, but not nearly as much as the 1212L IMO - you can easily dial in a fat, bottom heavy tone that sits well in a mix without it sounding harsh. It's a one cab solution - not massive compared to a lot of 4x10s, but when I had to do an outdoor show with no PA support, it really cut the mustard. It's a one man carry over short distance, but I'd like to fit some wheels at some point. It's far and away the best cab I've owned, without doubt.
14. Lovely shark, looks great in seafoam.
15. It's fairly light, but no idea how much it weighs (no scales at home). I'd hazard a guess at around 9lb? If it had a P pup at the neck I'd probably keep it, it's lovely to wear/play. I just don't think the musicman tone suits my current band.
16. Could always add a soapbar/single coil to the bridge position on your P bass and wire it up like a J? Works a treat, the P provides plenty of low end and midrange character and the bridge pup just adds a bit of definition when you add a touch of it.
17. I wish my dad had explained this when I was younger, it would have saved me a black eye and a broken thumb.
18. One of the things I like about stringing BEAD is that I can usually use the B as a thumbrest. When I play anything on the B I'll either float or anchor on one of the pickups - which one depends on the tone I want.
19. Beautiful bass. Status basses really do look that good in the flesh, too.
20. Up her arse? Perhaps I should have read further than the thread title.
21.
Certainly an acquired taste that doesn't work in most contexts! Here's a bit of Tony Levin with octave: There's also Michael Jackson's execrable "Earthsong", featuring Guy Pratt and an OC-2 (IIRC). God, that song makes my sh*t itch.
I just spat my coffee
