I've gone back to EB Slinkys after trying a few different brands. DR were the best of the alternatives for me. However I used to use Warwick Black Labels in a heavy rock band I was in, and they were great strings, punchy and powerful, but I did find them quite abrassive on the fingers. Great rock strings though.
Not so sure he's "our" Janek any more. I had a quick read of some of his posts on here (very interesting guy) and it seems he got pissed off with people taking potshots at him. He hasn't posted for quite a while.
You're not wrong, he got a right mawling every time he posted here, which I never did quite understand. I guess his comments rubbed a few people up the wrong way. It's a shame, he's a very talented bloke, and would be a great source of information on here, but instead he can be found on Talk Bass in the US.

Great song, I like that. I've seen Janek a couple of times with JEM as well as his own projects. He's also JEM's musical director I understand, and she was great live too. He's an all round cool cat our Janek.

For me "The One" doesn't exist. People on here who know me, know that I trade stuff in and out for fun, I just don't get attached to gear at all. I think out of all the basses I've moved on, the Kinal or the Overwater came the closest to what I'd call my ideal bass, but I sold them on didn't I? So I acn't believe that there's anything out there that will ever satisfy me 100%. I'm very happy with the G&Ls at the time of writing, but I know that at some point something will come along to tempt me, and I'll think about trading them out again, because I'm skint, and can't buy a bass for cash at the moment. If someone were to offer me a 6 string for instance, for both the G&Ls I'd think about it, just because I'd love a decent 6er. I'd like a Warwick Steamer Stage 1 or 2 before I die, and I'd like a good 6 stringer, but, "The One" just isn't out there at all for me.
My children were playing with Micheal Caines' children (that's the chef - Caines, not the actor Caine) at a fun park this afternoon. I did not speak or attempt to embarrass myself in front of Mr Caines.
Top bloke, top chef, but what possessed him to go for the rubber hand? I'd have gone for interchangeable kitchen utensils instead.

They look like Sadowsky knobs, maybe you can get them from the Sado website?

Two basses, always, a 4 and a 5. I've seen some musicians, including our guitarist, and other bass players, with 4 or 5 instruments on stands behind them, which to me, is ridiculous.
-
Yeah, my problem is, I'm a sucker for labels, so it has to say MIA on it somewhere or I'm not happy. That alone is ridiculous, as I've played some American dogs in my time, and I love Japanese instruments. Every Ibanez or Yamaha I've ever played, be it budget or expensive have been utterly brilliant. I'll bet you'd feel more at home with your Squier than a new US made Jazz.
-
Good score, he's a top bass player.

It just backs up what I've said many times, you don't have to spend a fortune to have a great bass. There are loads of "budget" basses out there that knock spots off their more expensive counterparts. I had an old Japanese Squier Precision until recently, that was head and shoulders above any other Precision I'd ever played. I sold it for peanuts too, and I wish I hadn't had to, it was worth double the price. I've had an OLP Tony Levin, and I've had MM Stingrays. My experience was the they were two very different beasts, even though they looked similar from a distance, and the build quality of the MM, in my case, was head and shoulders above that of the OLP, but both certainly had their place, and both were worthy of a place in anyone's gig bag. I generally use the G&Ls most of the time, but I'm more than happy to wheel out my Fleabass for gigs too, it looks great, it plays great and it sounds great, although admitedly it is modded. It's a budget bass, although it is overpriced, and I love it.
Get a grip the lot of you! You're nothing but sheep if you think that wreck is a 'prototype'!
That's us told then. -

Ha ha ha, this site just amazes me sometimes. How can a great thread turn into the usual mindless BC slanging match?? Get a grip. -
Yeah, toggle switches etc can be a pain in the butt, however I've gotten used to mine and don't have a problem with them at all, and to be honest, I hardly ever touch them, I tend to stick to my sound on both basses for most songs in the set. I agree with Pete, Leo was always going to say his last designs were the best. I don't actually agree that G&Ls are the best basses he made, I think the Fender Jazz and Precision were the best basses he made, and I'd put the Stingray and the G&L L2000 somewhere equally behind them. Walman, yep, let's be seeing yours, and maybe one day I'll own a Wal, the one bass that has still eluded me all these years.
-
I'd definately go the extra mile with the mods, the bass is worth the effort. Mine has ended up being a great bass, bit still a little bit of a one trick pony. My daughter will end up with it eventually.

Heavy rock? The mids are your friend. Medium gauge strings are fine 45-105, on a jazz I'd turn everything up full, and clunk the strings like a head on colision between a tractor and a bulldozer. Sansamp would be great, Aguilar tone hammer would be better IMO. The Aerodyne should be fine.

Stingrays are fab, I've had two of them, but now I've got a couple of G&Ls, I'm in no hurry to find another 'ray. If I found a grand to spend tomorrow, I wouldn't be looking for another Musicman, I'd be looking for another G&L.

Stingray Choice - 2EQ, 3EQ, or Classic (again!)
Rayman replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
Don't get either, get an L2000 For the real 'ray tone I'd say 2EQ, but having had a couple of 2EQs myself, I'd go for a 3EQ if I were to get another, it just adds another dimension to the tone, BUT, it's arguable that it doesn't sound as authentic as a 2EQ. -
I've tried a couple of Metros, and owned one, and was underwhelmed to be honest. Nice but sterile. I've played an NYC at a BC bash, and was blown away, it was beautiful. Make of that what you will.
-
As you've discovered, L2000s are bomb proof, and utterly outstanding basses, you're going to love it.

Yeah he's doing Manchester too Al I think. I really fancied going just to see Rhonda Smith, I was gutted when she wasn't involved in the Prince gigs at the O2.

what was the first number you gigged on a bass ?
Rayman replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
It would have been the mid 80s with a new wave band I sang and played bass for. It was all original stuff and pretty awful too probably, in some dump of a pub in Manchester I seem to remember, and it would've been on my Columbus Jazz. What a nightmare.
