Having had both, and if it's the Stingray sound you're after, then go for the Stingray. You won't get the Stingray tone from a G&L although you can get close. In terms of playability there's nothing between them for me. In terms of tonal possibilities there's no competition, go for the G&L, it can do do way more than the Stingray can, [i]but[/i] you'll never get [i]that[/i] 'ray tone from a G&L. Superb basses both, although I have had issues with both too. "Suck it and see" as Tommy said to Pammy.

Funny, I just took delivery of an RBX270J today to pass on to an 11 year old lad as his first bass. Tell you what, I'm in two minds about letting the little blighter have it. It's a really nice bass. Very light, and comfy to play, with some really great tones with the stock pups, but I reckon if you slapped a couple of Wizard pickups into it, you'd have a superb instrument. Yup, Stingrays are fab, I love the tones, especially from the 2 band version, but both the ones I had suffered from the quiet G string problem, and I never really sorted it out on either of them. Actually now I think I prefer the G&L I'm currently using. Not [i]quite that [/i]'ray tone, but close, and for me, many more other tones available that the Stingray can't do, so it's a much more versatile bass. Still love 'rays though.

1990/91 Made In Japan Squier Precision. I bought it from ebay in poor shape for a couple of hundred quid. I cleaned it up, put it back together, and hey presto, the nicest, comfiest, thumpiest P bass I've ever played, and I've played a few. Fitted with flats, it's soul/funk personified. I've had Overwaters, Musicmans, Sadowskys etc etc, but this little P bass will never leave me.

I think sometimes people will buy a sig bass to be like thier hero. It's almost like you've bought a small part of them, which in some cases you have, because the artist may have been heavily involved in the design of it. I don't have a problem with that at all if that's your bag. I've done it myself with a Marcus Miller Jazz, and a Geddy Lee Jazz, both superb basses regardless of the signatures. I've also had an Ibanez K5 even though I'm not a Fieldy fan at all, but it was a wonderful bass. I don't have a problem with signature basses at all, as long as you're buying the bass in it's own right, and not because of the signature on the headstock (or fretboard in Stings case).

I love the new bass feeling, I'm addicted to it, which is why I change my gear about so often. I agree 100% with Delberthot, I've had some top end gear that really bored me to death, and some cheaper basses that have blown me away. It certainly doesn't have to cost the earth to be a great instrument. To illustrate the point, I used the Fleabass on a couple of songs at last nights gig, and everyone commented on how great it sounded.

I'm baffled why professional companies can't get this right. I've ofter wondered about setting up a parcel delivery company myself, specializing in musical equipment maybe. As an ex removal man, I'm very aware of how to handle and pack stuff correctly. FWIW I've used Parcelfarce MANY times, never used anyone else, and I mean dozens of basses and guitars over the years, and they've always got them there in perfect nick. I don't doubt that many other people have had bad experiences though. Worst couriers for me are TNT. With my previous company they mangaged to destroy and lose more material than they actually delivered.

John had a prototype on his Precision at Bassday in Manchester last November. I thought it was cool then, I definately want one for my Squier now.

Stunning bass, and as a L42 fan I'd love to own one, but you'd have to have some bottle to pull that out at a gig.
