1. Salford had a nice fella called "Pash", who was a decent bass player, friendly and happy for you to try anything you liked. I did always feel that the staff were only after a sale at almost any cost, and were breathing down your neck until you told them you "weren't buying anything today" then they'd leave you alone. The gear selection used to be really good, a whole wall of many different makes of basses, but the last time I was in, a few months ago, the stock was confined to only one little corner, it was pathetic. Not only that, but some of the basses appeared covered in condensation, the tuners were actually wet!!! That included most of the Jazzes, and Musicmans, and couple of high end Warwicks. A mate of mine is a manager at a SC shop too, and has infromed me a few times that he can't wait to leave.
2. It's a cracker that is, and if this was a few months later I could've been up for it, but I'm not in a position to buy anything yet. I fancy another ray, especially a rosewood boarded 4 3EQ. Very nice, have a bump.
3. You're damn right that's porn!! Gimme those over 80% of everything else that appears on this thread. Fantastic basses.
4. These are so great. Any new players looking for fantastic bass at a great price, look no further. Any experienced players wanting a great backup, look no further. And I'm not even on commission.
5. You'll love it. They're superb basses, and like Paul says, capable of almost any tone you need. I'd love one myself.
6. I forgot to say, on the down side, they have a tendancy to break their footswitches. Mine's no exception, and is currently awaiting a replacement. Once done, I believe they're fine from then on.
7. Superb little pedal. Big bottom end boost, big clear, crisp highs, it makes an average rig sound fantastic, and makes a great rig sound massive. It doesn't boost volume levels at all, it just widens the spectum of tones, more bottom, more top. I reviewed mine on the old Bassworld site, and I likened it to this: Imagine your sound as an accordion half open, then you switch on the Aphex, and then imagine you stretch open the accordion as far as it'll go. That's what the pedal does to your sound. I hope that makes sense.
8. ................and please punctuate, I can't read your ads. Small thing I know, but irritating. Nice bass though.
9.
Fingers only. Old school!
+1
10. Yeah, and the Tony Levin 5.
11. Blimey Grant, thought you'd fallen of the end of the world, nice to see you back.
12. As in other simillar threads, I'd say the same thing..........Squier Vintage Modified Jazz and Yamaha BB414, both great basses.
13. Most people have already said it but........... Squier Vintage Modified Jazz, Yamaha BB414, Schecter Model T, all great basses. Don't let your stepdad decide for you though, go and try a few in the shops and decide for yourself, you'll know what you like the best only by listening to them with your own ears. For what it's worth, if it was me, the Squier would be favourite.
14. Yes, I've seen them thanks, I'll give you a shout if I'm interested.
15. I tried the DOD FX25 as you know Steve, I had yours, but I couldn't get on with it. I can't afford Boutique level stuff either, but I just need a giggable filter to use on a couple of songs, nothing fancy, but something with a nice useable downward wah. Would the MXR do that do you reckon? Or maybe a Maxon AF9?
16. How does the MXR Auto Q measure up?
17. I'll have Heavy Weather and Peace Beyond Passion (if it's still available), PM me with details.
I have a budget of about 230 quid so it should be enough for a guitar and amp second hand, thanks for the advice everyone it really helped!
Yamaha BB414 or a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz. Two great basses, and around your budget, they'd be my recommendations.
I don't know about that advice. Not for a first bass anyway. Everything feels unnatural when you start playing bass. Just get a good quality, fairly straightforward bass for a reasonable price and see how you get on.
Well yes, but I think it would be a mistake to just buy a bass and see how you get on. I think it's better to try a load of them first, then make a decision. I depends how much you've got to spend too. The Wesley looks nice, no idea how it plays though as I've never tried one, and that's the problem, you need to try them first, not rely on how it looks, I've tried some basses that look stunning and play like a drain, and I believe that could put a new player off the instrument. New or old, whatever you go for, try before you buy.

Yes, go and try some basses in some shops, as many as you can to get a feel for what you like the sound of. When you've found something you like, then start looking on ebay and on here for some used basses. My advice is don't buy new, as most used basses have already had a setup etc, something a new bass won't have, I'd go for a second hand bass, preferably from here as most people here are good honest folk. Don't just buy the first bass you see, and don't be tempted to buy a bass you've never played. Your first bass really needs to be comfortable for you, because if you buy something you don't like, you've lost your money and you'll be put off playing bass altogether, and we don't want that!! TAKE YOUR TIME, and try LOADS of basses before you buy anything!!!
21. Those Trabens are wicked, I've never seen one in the flesh, but I love those bridges. They did one with a large sun shape for the bridge, it looked fantastic.
22. Last I heard, our own (or at least, bassworld's own) Janek Gwizdala was playing bass for Mike Stern.
23. Cheers folks.
24. Unbelievable, I just bought my little girl a violin on the bay today, this looks like it'd be a better bet. How much are you after?
