  1. I’ve always argued, that you can play any genre of music on any model of bass. In theory you can just own a P bass and play anything on it (except fretless obvs) but am I wrong? Do you have to have that Ken Smith 6 for the jazz stuff? Or that Gibson Blackbird for metal? Or that Hofner Beatle bass for your 60s cover band? I’ve slapped some funk on a Thunderbird when that was the only bass to hand that night…..it wasn’t pretty, but it was ok? Does one really need more than one bass….. regardless of your choice of material??? Or can one do it all? 😳
  2. Probably a stupid question, but will an Epiphone Newport fit into a regular lead guitar gig bag?
  3. Dingwall really is the buzzword at the moment isn’t it? Sheldon seems like a top fella, and the basses seem to be really highly regarded? My mate swears by his Combustion…. it replaced his beloved stealth Bongo as his favourite. Me….. I’d rather have an SB1000, but I’d certainly like to have a go on one of these to see what all the hype is about?
  4. Peavey Micro Bass combos can be picked up for not much. I have one, and I love it for low volume home practice. Simple to use bass/mid/high EQ, no other nonsense. Great little amps. I recently picked up a Line 6 Studio 110, which is nice too, but I like the simplicity of the Peavey and it sounds ace, to my ears. Like @BigRedXsays though… what sounds good to me might sound pants to you…. I went down the Markbass route assuming it would be amazing, it wasn’t, to me.
  5. You can’t go wrong with a Yamaha BB, at any price. I’ve had a few older models, and played a couple of the later versions, and loved them all honestly.
  6. I found the same, and generally speaking you don’t tend to get that here, although I have found myself caught in the crossfire a couple of times. In my youth I’d fire back, but these days I stay out of any flack when I can.
  7. L-R: Me, Matt, Mike, …. can’t remember his name…. and Allan. I’m holding a Yamaha BB3000S….. god knows how much that’s worth now 😞
  8. I absolutely see it as the former. It’s the first thing I look at in the morning, and the last thing at night. It’s a blessing (banter, information) and a curse (for sale section), but it’s a safe place, full of like minded folks, of all backgrounds and ages. Some people here I’ve known for decades, some I meet on a daily basis, and most feel like friends. I was relatively young ish when BC started, now I’m not, and I’m definitely financially worse off. Of course there’s often a difference of opinion, sometimes even a bit of needle, but mostly we’re all on a similar road, just don’t mention politics 😒 Generally though, to have this resource as a reference for information and advice about all things Bass is a wonderful thing, and I just think everyone involved in the running of Basschat should have a pat on the back. Because it takes a lot of work to keep this place going. 🤘🏻
  9. Another one here… Both knees, but I’m struggling with both shoulders and a hip too. I’m feeling very old. I’ve been fit (“a matter of opinion” - Mrs Rayman) all my life, but now in my late 50s, I’m falling apart. Just standing up for the duration of a rehearsal or gig is very uncomfortable now. I’m trying lighter basses, shortscale and playing with the bass lower on the strap to make life easier.
  10. I love H&C. Pat Kanes’ voice is a thing of beauty, and let me tell you, having seen them live a few months ago, his voice is as good as ever. I kicked myself for not trying to find him after the gig and tell him.
  11. 6am….. Watching Phil Jones explain how little speakers work for bass….
  12. I nearly said last night, let’s see pictures….. very cool
  13. Yep, I’d have the neck off, and just try a couple of adjustments in either direction to be sure the truss rod works ok. It looks alright to me, I’ve seen worse. Just make sure it isn’t ragged up tight with no further adjustment available.
  14. That’s very cool….. I’ve never heard of them. Sonic Blue with an off white pearl plate….. I’d buy one
  15. I think the Icicle Works did one of those Sefton Park gigs…… they were an ace band….
  16. This probably needs moving to gear gallery @ped?
  17. I haven’t done this for years, and I was bored, SO… Top left to right: 2 x Sunn Mustangs, Epiphone Embassy, Squier Frank Bello. Lay down: Reverend Justice Bottom left to right: Ibanez Jet Star, Epiphone Newport, Warwick Streamer Standard (German) and an Aria IGB68. The only one missing is an incoming Thunderbird.
  18. First gig was 14, as the frontman of a rock covers band….. 6 songs, the usual suspects, Hendrix, Deep Purple etc…. That was 44 yrs ago 😞 I didn’t pick up the bass until a year later.
  19. Trip Hop session….. probably way too loud for the neighbours
