Had this revalved and recapped by our own Subthumper as a handier alternative to my Matamp Slave, but that is really unecessary considering all the other amps I have at this point. This one is basically boring because it is just a massive, 6CA7 and Partridge transformer pwoer amp. big clean valveness that needs a preamp for much colour. Tech 21 VT bass works well. This is what you need if you have a preamp you really like, but need brutal valve power. It is a pretty sensible size too, much smaller than the full on 120 heads, sits nicely on the Barefaced cabs without overhanging like most. If it wasn't wonky in the pic, it would show it being about rack size. £350 for it, will consider shipping. Bear in min that is recently properly overhauled, valves and caps replaced, and resistors added for bias testing. I'm fussy about my valve amps.

Use this, because it is dependent on how much your choices cost: http://www.dutycalculator.com/

Should ignore watts all round and go directly to SPL, maybe via voltage swing for the scenic route.
The duff valve doesn't appear to have blown. It still glows and flashes blue. It is only the fuses that blew. I have taken it out ,cleaned the contacts and put it back but this didn't achieve anything.
This is classic signs of a dead valve. It can be pretty harmful to the rest of the amp to keep trying to use it, the fuse is there to cut power before damage occurs, but they aren't always fast enough.
-
If its new, the valve will have died from a manufacturing flaw, rather than general wear, so not unlikely the others are fine. Not sure how the bias is set up in that amp, if you can bias them individually, won't even need a matched set. Components associated with the valve are the more likely thing to have damage.

Fender Bassman 100 vs Orange 200 Comparisons?
Mr. Foxen replied to cd_david's topic in Amps and Cabs
Absolutely not. It´s a basscab not guitarcab. It´s much bigger than a guitar 4x12"and speakers are mounted in a very funny way. Each speaker blows into another direction. This helps to hear your basssound all over the place.
Bigger on the outside, but because of the shape, the volume of the inside isn't proportionally as big. -
Really should have to replace the lot, but should be done by a tech that can sort the bias. Plenty of valves are duff form new these days. If you have just bought it, get it fixed under warranty. Or return it and get a Matamp and you'll have less chance of this sort of trouble. Fair chance the dead tube will have taken out some other things with it, so that will need sorting before you are good to go again.

Fender Bassman 100 vs Orange 200 Comparisons?
Mr. Foxen replied to cd_david's topic in Amps and Cabs
Incidentally, what do the odd 4 x 12" cabs sound like?
I reckon pretty much like a guitar cab. They split seams a lot and get all sorts of wrong sounds from that though. -
Mr Foxen, you clearly have an easy going relationship with all in your home!
Up until I plug in. Making the most of not having to consider the spousal approval factor while I can.

Fender Bassman 100 vs Orange 200 Comparisons?
Mr. Foxen replied to cd_david's topic in Amps and Cabs
The Orange with the three band eq is pretty much a Fender style tone stack, but the gain is different so they end up dirtier. Don't think the power stage is that similar, not sure but some Fender stuff ran in Ultralinear. A lot of colour/limitation is going to come from that cab though, is it one of the pyramid baffle ones? If you have money to chuck about, probably can do better than Orange, basically, Matamp. If all you need is more volume and like the tone of the amp, a better cab is the way, Barefaced Super15 will be lighter, louder and lower than the cab you have, but might not offer the same cab colouration. -
Couldn't help thinking about how much his apartment must stink of cigareete smoke and how all his precious artefacts and daggars must be covered in nicotine stains. Yuck.
Apartments there will have some extreme aircon, so probably isn't comparable to smokers house over here.

If he is footing the bill, get a written estimate, and get that paid.
-
Note that impedance matching rules are different for valve and solid state power stages.
-
Shouldn't be your problem, the cost, and the hassle are down to idiot three string bassist. Shoulda told him to get a five string so he'd have a spare.
Did CMI not become Ibanez or the distributor for Ibanez? The old brain is hazy and knackered ... Gosh was that 1976? Man where was I? Probably on a different planet ... Klangers!
Might be thinking of Cimar, that were made in the same factory as some Ibanez, apparently along with every nasty plywood japanese jazz copy on ebay. -
Push on the cone an see if it feels scratchy when it moves in and out, that is the sign of a deformed voice coil and might give you noise. The other possibles are loose wire, either as an electrical contact, or touching the cone. You'll need the exact right recone kit, best email eminence direct. It is pretty tough to overpower a Kappalite in a Compact, so likely is some other issue. Try messaging Barefaced, Alex might be curious about what you've managed to do. Got a circumstance that let to the problem?

Matt Matthias decided musicians were irredeemable idiots and decided to make disco PA gear instead. Fair. -
If DC did break voice coils, most of my cabs would break because I use a 9v battery to check I wired all the speakers in the same polarity.
